Wow, never in a million years would I expect a tough-but-fair contest
between Portugal and Uruguay. All the credits in the world to the
CONCACAF crews, they indicated from early on they weren't buying any
bullshit (Suarez got a slight push in the back, went down like getting
shot holding his head -- the refs happily allowed him to lie there);
after a few tries (Suarez the most persistent), most of them
concentrated on playing football rather than conning the refs. That's
how it should be.

I'm not sure I'd credit the officials, VAR had a lot to do with it.
Suarez spoke about the VAR factor before the game:

https://www.fourfourtwo.com.au/feature/var-leads-to-fewer-complaints-from-players---suarez-496250

“Of course the players are discussing it. Now penalties are sometimes
called in cases were they weren't previously. It means that many
[players] will complain less [to referees over their decisions],”

What we really need is for Neymar to get booked for his theatrics.

I think that was a penalty in the final minutes, for obstruction. Unfortunately I couldn't find any video for it, let alone a good one. It's much more difficult with football videos these days.

That aside, the second Uruguay goal was superb. The first one too but the second one a bit better IMO.

As expected, Ronaldo didn't win it. In 4 years he'll be too old and Portugal's good moment will most likely be gone. Same holds true for Messi. 99% that none of them will win it in their lifetimes. Which goes to show what I said shortly before the tournament, the WCup will become less and less relevant. The UCL will be the main tournament from now on, actually it already is for some time. When they finally introduce the video ref it will be clear.

That guarantees it will always be a bigger deal than the UCL. Is it a

A penalty can *never* be given for obstruction, that's an *indirect*

I guess this is also a little bit subjective. At a minimum, it isn't relevant any more for comparing the careers of top players. (And, of course, answering the fundamental question of our time, who's better, Ronaldo or Messi ? :) Fortunately neither of them will win it. Otherwise Messi would have had a little bit of an unfair advantage.)
To me, money and number of spectators matter less. What's important is first of all play quality, and the UCL wins hands down on this point. And, also, how good it is at establishing the ranking of top players, as I said. I'm an individualist. But, of course, people will always be interested in which NT is / are the best, so the WCup will always remain relevant, that's correct. (Also quality of officiating, of course, this is where the video ref comes into play.)
