As the state leagues are reaching their final, a new edition of
the Brazilian National League is about to start.
Thanks to some great ideas by our friend Milivella, besides our
traditional score prediction competition (which I traditionally
only start on the second round, as the first one has too big a
trend of weird scores) we'll have a competition where you can
pick a group of teams to cheer on for the whole season.

It's the BRASILEIRÃO MALUCO (which translates to "Crazy
Brazilian League"):

I chose the pools based on two criteria:

I - each group has one team that finished between 1st and 5th
in 2008, one that finished 6th to 10th, one that finished
11th to 15th and one that finished 16th or came up from
Série B.

II - each group has at most one club from each state, with
exception of pool A, which has two clubs from São Paulo
(São Paulo FC and Barueri). Additionally, I managed to
keep the Northeast teams apart as well as the Southern
ones (except for Internacional and Avaí which I couldn't
keep apart without breaking other criteria).

Here are the pools from where you can choose, on a first call
basis:

A
São Paulo
Coritiba
Fluminense
Barueri

B
Grêmio
Goiás
Santos
Náutico

C
Cruzeiro
Botafogo
Sport Recife
Santo André

D
Palmeiras
Internacional
Atlético-MG
Avaí

E
Flamengo
Vitória
Atlético-PR
Corinthians

You get points when your teams get points. If one of your teams
win, you get TWO points. If your team draw you get ONE. That's
meant to avoid you have to cheer against draws between two teams
of your own (a draw would be one point wasted!).

Now, there's a twist! From around Round 3 onwards, I'll pick
some special match-ups where teams from different pools face
each other. Then, if a team from your pool is in a specific
match-up, you may BET some of your points on your team winning
the game! I'll pick mostly derbies and balanced matches (where,
for instance, the home team is a few points behind the away team
on the table). Then your opponent (who owns the other team in
the match-up) may ACCEPT the bet (which means all the points go
to the owner of the winner, or nothing happens if it's a draw),
RAISE it (which means you may match his raised bet or forfeit it,
giving away one point to him) or FORFEIT it (giving away a point
to you). Maximum bet is TEN POINTS apiece OR the minimum total
current score between the two involved gamblers, to avoid
extreme bluffing. Players may raise each others bet at will
until it hits the ceiling described above, and if time to bet
runs out before a player responds, the default answer will be
FORFEIT (if the player hasn't made any action in the round) or
ACCEPT (if he has been the first to bet or has accepted or
raised the bet at any moment). If no player makes a bet, no
points will be exchanged. Also no points are exchanged if the
bet was ultimately accepted and the match ends in a draw.

You may already pick one of the five pools above, answering to
this thread.

Thanks!

Tchau!

Just a clarification: it's of course the minimum between the
two values cited above (10 and minimum score).

Truth is that the difference my ideas vs. your game is the same as
drawing a rectangle vs. inventing television! You have made a great

Very smart, because this way you can't cheer for two teams of the same
state.

I'd like to inquire a bit about Brazilian teams, because at present I
know nothing about them, but I don't want to lose time and so the
chance to be in the game, so I pick pool E:

Maybe there should be two different deadlines: e.g.:
- 24 hours before the first match: to bet
- kick-off of the first match: to accept, raise or forfeit

Thanks again, this time for organizing this competition.

I won't sign up, because it's highly unlikely I'll be able to check

I'll leave all 5 for active players, rather than often being an

Reading this list again carefully, this is probably the strongest pool
since Atletico
MG is usually stronger than their rank last year. The real question
would be will
Palmeiras and Internacional keep their best young players till the
Brasileirao or
will they go to other leagues.

Atlético-MG really seem to be decent this year with the addition of
former PSV striker Diego Tardelli.
Palmeiras, though, even with Luxemburgo at the helm and Keirrison
having a good start as striker, are in a sort of disarray because of
their nightmare group in Copa Libertadores.

This is exactly my opinion, although the Brasileirão is too
unpredictable to be sure.

All in all, the pools look as balanced as they probably could be at
this point.

Palmeiras and Inter should be at least Libertadores contenders, and
Atlético-MG looks like they clearly fit in the top 10. Avaí is the
newcomer, but they reached their state league final, suggesting they
could be in form to stay in Série A this year, or even fight for a
Sudamericana spot.

But, then again, nothing of the above is guaranteed.

Let me briefly tell why I really like this game. It has all the
features that I look for in a game about football (note that none of
the games that I've organized has all these features!):

1. It's very simple to play (and to manage for the game-master).

2. There is continuity: you get fond of your pool of teams.

3. There is an immediate link actions -> outcomes: you bet on a match -
> you win or lose points.

4. There is direct competition: the bet raising system!

(2 + 3 + 4 = It's very enjoyable.)

5. It's not banal: e.g. it reminds you that in every league that are
many mini-leagues (to win the title, to not get relegated, etc.); but
OTOH Brasileirao is special because, compared to many European
leagues, it's pretty balanced; etc.

My top option would have been group D (Palmeiras and the others), but
if that is taken or we want to keep it open for Luiz, I'll go with B

Just a proposal, assuming that someone is interested in the game but
doesn't like to pick the last remaining pools (or one of the remaining
two): we could have an auction for pools. E.g. if I offer 2 points for
pool A and nobody offers more than me, I get pool A nad I have an
handicap of 2 points (i.e. I start from -2 points).

Naturally, Jesus, use this idea or not at your will. :)

As milivella pointed out, he's got pool E already. If you pick pool C
we are complete. I'll make it semi-random, because I want to make the
derbies part of the bets and keep all players in the same amount of
games to bet by the end of the season (around 24).

Both ends are appreciable!

With (semi-)randomly chosen games, won't we end up with lopsided
matches (e.g. Sao Paulo vs. Avai)?

Great first week for my teams. Fluminese is beating Sao Paulo right now.
Coritiba lost yesterday and Barueri drew.

Well, you're getting two points from Fluminense-Sao Paulo no matter
what score. Coritiba indeed slipped badly but, for Barueri, I figure
that getting a point at the Ilha do Retiro was indeed a great first
