I was recently bought a replica 1970s Brazilian football shirt made by what
is supposed to be the most reputable vintage shirt manufacturer in this
country. However I couldn't help but notice that the letters on the badge
were different from what they are now. Instead of the familiar CBF logo it
says CBD is this correct and, if so, what does it mean?
Cheers,
Robin (rsp...@ic.ac.uk).

It means "Confederacao Brasileira de Desportos" (Brasilian Confederation
of Sports) instead of nowadays "Confederacao Brasileira de Futebol"
(Brasilian Confederation of Football). Some time in the 1970's, the CBD
was split into individual confederation for each sport, football being
one of them. CDB included football, volleyball, basketball.

Yes, it's correct. CBD stands for Confederação Brasileira de Desportos
(in case your computer doesn't show some different portuguese letters,
I'll write again, with similar letters: Confederacao Brasileira de
Desportos). The name was changed I think during the 80's to Confederacao
Brasileira de Futebol (CBF)

The first name meant Brazilian Sports Confederation. Later, this
organization started to deal only with football, so the name was changed
to Brazilian Football Confederation.

During the 80's, also, the badge was changed to show the Jules Rimet
cup. Later it was changed back.

Yes, that is correct and CBD means Confederacao Brasileira de Desportes.

A friend of mine wants to answer your question:

Your shirt is fine. Brazil used to wear the CBD abbeviation in past
world cups. The D stands for 'Deportes' (Sports).

Mario.
