Group A

Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC - FC Astana 0-1 (0-0)
(Twumasi 57')

Maccabi tried a lot in this match, but their efforts were either too weak,
off target, or were saved by Astana keeper Erić, and so they remain the only
Europa League team to still not have scored a goal after four matches.
Instead, Patrick Twumasi gave the Kazakhs their first ever away win in a
European group phase by volleying in Abzal Beysebekov's low cross, only
seconds after the Ghanaian had already seen a goal chalked off for a close
offside.

SK Slavia Praha - Villarreal CF 0-2 (0-1)
(Bacca 15', Deli 89' (og))

As in their previous match, both sides were in an attacking mood in the
first half, but only Villarreal took one of their numerous chances, Carlos
Bacca volleyed in the lose ball after Slavia keeper Laštůvka had only pushed
away Mario Gaspar's fast cross. Pablo Fornals was then guilty of an
egregious miss early in the second half, but it didn't matter as Slavia also
continued to waste their chances, and late on Simon Deli slid into
Cheryshev's cross thereby steering it into his own net.

BSC Young Boys - FC Dynamo Kyiv 0-1 (0-0)
(Buyalskiy 70')

After having been ousted by YB from the Champions League qualifiers in the
summer the Ukrainians got their revenge over the Swiss, but they had to
survive many a scare as Young Boys were the clearly better team in the first
half and were unlucky when after a corner kick Kasim Nuhu's header thundered
off the right post. The match was more balanced in the second half, and the
goal that decided the tie came courtesy of terrible defending by YB's young
left-back Jordan Lotomba who failed to head clear a simple ball, instead
sending it straight to Derlis González, and the Paraguayan centred for
Vitaliy Buyalskiy who dummied Djibril Sow before firing in from near the
penalty spot.

FK Partizan - KF Skënderbeu Korçë 2-0 (1-0)
(Tošić 39', Tawamba 66')

Two gifts by the Albanians gave Partizan an easy win, first Skënderbeu
keeper Shehi (at 40 the oldest player in the competition) didn't react at
all when Zoran Tošić's free-kick flew past him, then he played a dangerous
pass out of defence to Sabien Lilaj who promptly lost the ball to Ognjen
Ožegović, in the end leaving Léandre Tawamba with a simple tap-in finish. In
his defence, Shehi also showed some pretty good saves in this match.

Group C

İstanbul Başakşehir FK - TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 1-1 (0-0)
(Višća 90'+3; Grillitsch 47')

Başakşehir again didn't field their strongest team, but they had the first
big chance of the match, but Hoffenheim keeper Baumann saved expertly
against Kerim Frei. Hoffenheim were the better team after that though, and
63 seconds after the re-start Florian Grillitsch tapped in Sandro Wagner's
centre to give them a deserved lead. The Germans then seemed to content
themselves with protecting this slim result though, and as it happens so
often that passivity was punished seconds before the end, Edin Višća fired
in a well-placed curled shot from 20 metres.

Višća goal: https://gfycat.com/IcyGloomyElephant

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad - SC Braga 1-1 (0-0)
(Marcelinho 68'; Fransérgio 83')

Braga showed a very poor performance in the first half, but ironically
enough the Bulgarian champions didn't manage to make their clear superiority
(Jody Lukoki scored a nice goal that was correctly chalked off for a close
offside) count until the second half when Braga were actually much improved
and had by then already missed a couple of opportunities of their own.
Ludogorets' lead came courtesy of Bulgarian-Brazilian Marcelinho who
volleyed into the empty net after Braga keeper Matheus had parried
Wanderson's header from a Lukoki corner. Nevertheless, Braga got a -
considering their second-half performance deserved - equaliser when
Fransérgio all alone in front of the Ludogorets net headed in Paulinho's
weighted cross.

HNK Rijeka - FK Austria Wien 1-4 (0-1)
(Pavičić 61'; Prokop 41', 62', Serbest 73', Monschein 83';
Red Card: Mišić (Rij) 72')

In a wide open and entertaining first half, Austria's offensive prowess for
once triumphed over their defensive frailties, as Rijeka either missed their
opportunities or saw them denied by Pentz, while at the other end 20-year-
old Dominik Prokop scored a quality goal, dancing past three Croatian
defenders before pushing the ball past Prskalo. Rijeka got the equaliser in
the second half following nice interplay between former Austria player
Alexander Gorgon and Domagoj Pavičić in the box, but just 60 seconds later
the Veilchen, playing in orange, retook the lead, man of the match Prokop
slotted in fellow youngster's Gluhakovic's cut-back cross. Prokop then
turned from villain to even more villain, at least from a Croatian point of
view, as his superb play-acting led to Josip Mišić being sent off for an
alleged slap, and from the ensuing free-kick Gorgon inadvertently headed on
Holzhauser's cross and Tarkan Serbest, who just recently turned down, or at
least postponed, a call-up to the Turkish NT, rose to head in. A dejected
Rijeka side fell apart and allowed Raphael Holzhauser, the slowest player
I've ever seen, to race (!) clear and centre for Christoph Monschein to tap
in the fourth.

Austria have now played three times against Croatian clubs in the last four
years, and this have been the results:

home:
Austria - Dinamo Zagreb 2-3 L
Austria - Osijek 0-1 L
Austria - Rijeka 1-3 L

away:
Dinamo Zagreb - Austria 0-2 W
Osijek - Austria 1-2 W
Rijeka - Austria 1-4 W

Overall, in the last two EL seasons including qualifiers, Austria have
posted a home record of 2-2-6 and an away record of 7-2-1. One reason for
this is that they had to play those home matches in the unloved Happel
stadium while they're refurbishing their own Generali Arena, but it's still
remarkable.

AEK FC - AC Milan 0-0 (0-0)

Another quite poor performance by Milan, Montella is certainly feeling the
pressure. AEK had all the chances, especially before the break, but Milan
could have snatched the win in the second half but Montolivo's shot came off
the far post.

Apollon Limassol FC - Atalanta BC 1-1 (0-1)
(Zelaya 90'+4; Iličić 35' (pen))

Atalanta were without Papu Gómez because of injury, but otherwise sent their
strongest team to Cyprus and they took the lead after Apollon's Brazilian
centre-back Alef (again with those Brazilian names!) had bowled over Iličić
in the box, and the Slovenian converted from the spot himself. Atalanta
seemed to be in control of the match in a subdued second half, hitting also
the post through Petagna's header, but in stoppage time the Cypriots yet
again showed their remarkable resilience in this competition, seconds after
they didn't get what would have been a justified handball penalty, the
Argentine Emilio Zelaya dove low to head in João Pedro's hopeful cross.

Olympique Lyonnais - Everton FC 3-0 (0-0)
(Traoré 68', Aouar 76', Depay 88'; Red Card: Schneiderlin (Eve) 80')

In the first half the match was overshadowed by Cuca Martina's freak injury,
the Curaçao international had to be treated on the pitch for several minutes
following an awkward fall on his back and was stretchered off with a neck
brace, but was thankfully diagnosed only with a concussion and could leave
the hospital soon after the game. The Toffees. playing a lot of reserves,
were on the back foot throughout the match but at least managed to keep Lyon
at bay for over an hour until an unlucky block by Schneiderlin pulled the
youngster Holgate out of position, and the ball fell perfectly for Bertrand
Traoré to round Pickford and slot in. 19-year-old Houssem Aouar added a
second, exploiting the disarray Everton's defence found itself in after
Pickford had made a last-gasp save against Mariano. To add insult to injury,
Schneiderlin, whose stock has dropped significantly since his Southampton
days, got himself sent off with a second yellow for needlessly felling
Cornet, and Memphis headed in Ferri's cross for the third.

Everton are one of just three out of 80 teams that have already been
mathematically eliminated from Europe after just four matchdays. This club
is currently a shambles.

FC København - FC Zlín 3-0 (1-0)
(Lüftner 40', Verbič 49', 90'+2)

A Czech gave the Danes the lead, Michael Lüftner headed in Pierre
Bengtsson's free-kick. Benjamin Verbič made it two soon after the break with
a nice curled shot from the edge of the D. Near the end, the substitute
Danny Amankwaa in front of the empty net only hit the post for Copenhagen,
but he made amends in stoppage time by playing a one-two with Verbič that
allowed the Slovenian to get his second of the night.

FC Lokomotiv Moskva - FC Sheriff 1-2 (1-1)
(Farfán 26'; Badibanga 41', Brezovec 58')

The match proceeded according to form when Jefferson Farfán on the break
(and just after the Moldavians had a penalty shout waved off) beat Sheriff's
Croatian keeper Mikulić with a shot from an impossible angle, but things
then went pear-shaped for the Russian League leaders pretty quickly.
Goalkeeper Guilherme had to come off injured having pulled a muscle, and his
replacement Medvedev soon had to pick the ball out of the net, but Petru
Racu's goal was called back for a hand ball. No matter, as just four minutes
later Sheriff's dreadlocked Belgian winger Ziguy Badibanga emulated Farfán
and likewise drilled home a shot from a tight angle, and the Moldavian
champions got a historic first group phase away win thanks to Josip Brezovec
who rifled in a loose ball from the edge of the box. A shell-shocked
Lokomotiv side never came close to equalising, instead Sheriff could have
added a third but Badibanga from close range saw himself denied by Medvedev.

FC FCSB - Hapoel Be'er-Sheva FC 1-1 (1-1)
(Coman 31'; Sahar 37')

Not-Steaua took the lead thanks to utter confusion in the Be'er-Sheva
defence - they just switched off, probably expecting a whistle after Denis
Alibec had been felled, but the referee waved to play on and Florinel Coman
simply collected the loose ball, rounded Hapoel keeper Goresh and rolled it
into the empty net. The Israeli soon were level though, Ben Sahar tapped in
from close range from Miguel Vítor's excellent overhead cross. The Romanians
can count themselves lucky that the draw was enough to qualify them to the
round of 32, as in the second half they were definitively cheated as none of
the referees around managed to see that Dor Elo had parried Budescu's shot
on the goal line with his arm. Late on Loai Taha also saved on the Be'er-
Sheva goal line against Gnohéré, but this time correctly with his head.

FC Viktoria Plzeň - FC Lugano 4-1 (3-1)
(Krmenčík 4', 19', Hořava 45', Čermák 56'; Mariani 15')

Michael Krmenčík volleyed in Aleš Čermák's cross to give Viktorka an early
lead, but Lugano soon equalised thanks to a great lob by Davide Mariani. The
Ticinesi remained vulnerable on crosses though, and Krmenčík tapped in his
second from Řezník's cutback while Tomáš Hořava headed in Jan Kopic's free-
kick. Plzeň's fourth also came after a run on the wing, Krmenčík cleverly
laid back Řezník's cross for Čermák to slot home.

Arsenal FC - FK Crvena Zvezda 0-0 (0-0)

Going one higher than in their previous Europa League matches, Arsenal
started the match with seven Englishmen as reserve keeper Matt Macey got his
second start for the club. Macey showed some nerves early on, but then did
well to save against Srnić and to push Savić's header onto the crossbar.
Arsenal only needed a point to secure qualification to the round of 32, and
that's exactly what they got even with a rather insipid display, since
Richard Boakye one-on-one with Macey fired well wide and at the other end
Anthony's younger brother Damien Le Tallec acrobatically scraped Wilshere's
effort off the goal line.

1. FC Köln - FC BATE Borisov 5-2 (1-2)
(Zoller 16', Osako 54', 82', Guirassy 63', Jojić 90'; Milunović 31',
Signevich 33')

Horn had to save early against Ivanić's deflected shot, but then Köln were
the clearly better team and after Guirassy and Bittencourt had already
missed excellent opportunities they took the deserved lead when Konstantin
Rausch stole the ball off Volodko and Salih Özcan released Simon Zoller on
the break who despite being pressed by two defenders left BATE keeper
Scherbitski no chance. Nevertheless, the match seemed to follow the script
of many a Köln game this season as out of nowhere BATE equalised because of
typically lax defending of a free-kick, and they even took the lead thanks
to a wonderful overhead strike by Mikalay Signevich. Yuya Osako came on at
half-time for Christian Clemens, and the Japanese striker repaid that
confidence by volleying in from the edge of the box after the BATE defence
had failed to clear a free-kick. The much-maligned Sehrou Guirassy then gave
Köln the lead again with a fine free-kick that beat Scherbitsky at his post.
The match was absolutely on the edge at this point, as BATE had several good
opportunities to get the equaliser, but Horn came to the rescue against
Signevich's header and the referee also failed to award the Belarusians a
justified penalty when on the follow-up Maroh caught Volodko full in the
face. Late on, Köln managed to exploit the space given to them on the break,
and after Scherbitski had already saved against Özcan and Heintz Bittencourt
showed some nice trickery on the left wing and Osako slid in to steer his
cross over the line. Osako late on also turned provider as Jojić headed in
his weighted cross.

Could this be the turnaround? Time will tell. At least, Köln scored more
goals in this one game than in their first ten Bundesliga matches.

Vitória SC - Olympique de Marseille 1-0 (0-0)
(Hurtado 80'; Red Cards: Evra (Oly, on bench) before kick-off,
Kamara (Oly) 86')

Patrice Evra wrote Europa League history by becoming the first player to be
sent off before the match even started - he got into a scuffle with some OM
away fans five minutes before kick-off, and threw a Cantona-like kung-fu
kick at one of them. Marseille have meanwhile suspended him, UEFA will
decide their punishment in about a week.
The match itself was quite even but definitively less interesting - Clinton
N'Jie was a lively presence for Marseille up front, if way too wasteful with
his finishing, while Guimarães' South Americans remained always dangerous -
Rafael Martins' shot from distance on the break came off the crossbar,
Raphinha saw his close-range effort saved by Mandanda, and Paolo Hurtado
finally broke the deadlock by heading in Francisco Ramos' cross. Late on 17-
year-old Boubacar Kamara also collected a second booking for a high tackle
on Ramos.

Hertha BSC - FC Zorya Luhansk 2-0 (1-0)
(Selke 16', 73')

Hertha were much improved compared to their previous Europa League matches,
and they took a deserved lead when Davie Selke headed in Maximilian
Mittelstädt's cross. Still, the Ukrainians did have their chances to
equalise, but Lunov's shot flew just wide and Gordiyenko's volley alone in
front of Kraft went wildly high and wide. A gift by the Ukrainians calmed
German nerves, Opanasenko's terrible pass was collected by Esswein, and he
sent Selke clear who rounded Zorya keeper Lunin for his second of the night.

Athletic Club - Östersunds FK 1-0 (0-0)
(Aduriz 70'; Red Card: Nuñez (Bil) 89')

The Basques dominated the match but had to wait for a long time for the
breakthrough against a disciplined Östersund defence and their keeper Aly
Keita's excellent saves. In the end it was Aritz Aduriz who headed the ball
over the line after it had crashed off the bar from Raúl García's close
range shot. Late on Unai Nuñez got his second booking for pulling back
Gabriel Somi, but it was too late for the Swedes to make a difference.

SBV Vitesse - SV Zulte Waregem 0-2 (0-1)
(Dabo 3' (og), Kaya 70'; Red Cards: Madu (Zul) 22', Büttner (Vit) 52')

Vitesse got off to the worst of starts when after just 167 seconds Chelsea
loanee Fankaty Dabo deflected Marvin Baudry's goal-bound header past his own
keeper. Onur Kaya's free-kick then only went off the post for Zulte, and the
Dutch were handed a lifeline when after just 22 minutes Kingsley Madu
already collected his second booking for needlessly going through the back
of Rashica. Vitesse subsequently had their best spell of the game - Mason
Mount, another young English Chelsea loanee, saw his lob fall onto the
crossbar, and Zulte keeper Bostyn deviated Rashica's header onto the bar as
well. A Vitesse equaliser wouldn't have been entirely undeserved at this
point, but they weakened themselves when former Man United flop Alexander
Büttner got himself also sent off with a second yellow for throwing an elbow
at Coopman. Ten against ten the Belgians decided the match when Kaya beat
Vitesse keeper Pasveer with a precise shot from the edge of the D.

SS Lazio - OGC Nice 1-0 (0-0)
(Le Marchand 90'+2 (og))

Lazio didn't play a good game by any means, but they still managed to
maintain their perfect record as in stoppage time Maxime Le Marchand
unluckily headed Luis Alberto's corner kick into his own net.

A rare match: UEFA stats record not a single shot on target for either team.

2 Nice 2-0-2 9-5 6
3 Zulte Waregem 1-1-2 4-8 4
4 Vitesse 0-1-3 3-9 1

At long last, a win for a Belgian team.

The last time neither Belgium nor the Netherlands saw a team survive in
Europe after the winter break was in 1998/99. Unless Zulte get a result
against Nice, we might see it happen again.

Real Sociedad - FK Vardar 3-0 (1-0)
(Juanmi 31', De la Bella 69', Bautista 81')

La Real took it a bit easier on the Macedonians than in their previous
encounter, but still cruised to an easy win. Among a ton of other chances,
Juanmi headed in Sergio Canales' corner kick, Alberto de la Bella expertly
volleyed in Andoni Gorosabel's cross, and the young substitute Jon Bautista
made it three running onto another Canales free-kick.

Rosenborg BK - FC Zenit 1-1 (0-0)
(Bendtner 55' (pen); Kokorin 90'+3)

In an open encounter both sides had several good opportunities to take the
lead, but it needed a clumsy wrestling move in the box by Miha Mevlja on
Samuel Adegbenro to put the Norwegians in front, Bendtner converted from the
spot. The Russians subsequently cranked up the pressure and got the deserved
equaliser that sent them through to the round of 32 ten seconds before the
end of stoppage time, Aleksandr Kokorin volleyed in Emiliano Rigoni's cross.

It's 9 goals in the last three matches (1-3 in Berlin, 1-2 at Bayer and
this), and in the one before they really should have spanked Werder but
missed several big chances.

I'd say their turnaround is in full swing. Tomorrow they will play Hopp,
so this will be difficult and they may not win, but I do not think they
will be relegated. You can't create that much and go down.

At least not if you are not Stuttgart.

In the EL they are screwed, though.

I love your match report. It must have been an exciting game.

Hertha will have to play in Bilbao, that is quite some mountain to climb
for them.

Glad you didn't go to this one then? ;)

What is happening at Nice? Is Favre's job still safe?

A miracle!

Maybe Dortmund should get their next boss from Vienna then.

At least one of them.

If Östersund wins next round, then they are through, and if Zorya wins,
then they have a very nice position.

Interestingly, suddenly, the pressure is on Östersund. The, on paper,
easiest match coming up.

I was shocked by the fact no player of Everton was around him
during this time, only players of Lyon...

Fined €10,000 and banned from Uefa club matches until the end of this season.
Contract with Marseille terminated by mutual consent.

End of career?

Is such a sanction usual. A little harsh, no ?

Already done :).

No. It's a criminal offense to kick people.

Cantona's ban was 9 months, extending into the following season, and it
was for all football related activities - the ban almost got extended
because he took part in a kickabout with a nearby lower league team. And
he got a 2 weeks prison sentence, which was later amended to community
service.

Other time, other circumstances, other judges.

Are there any other comparable incidents?

I don't know, my question was serious. Seeing some bans for
dangerous foul injuring players and making them disapear from
football, I'm surprised with this one-year ban just for a kick
on a fan while the game didn't kick off.

Disappointing results since I posted the above. What can I say? I am a
HSV fan. I am used to turnarounds!

It seems they saved all their luck for Thursday. Or maybe they are just
unlucky Arsenal doesn't play Bundesliga. :)

I guess this is more proof for Juan's theory that all the higher-ups in football
read this newsgroup for advice ;-)
