1) German Prosecutors have uncovered a match fixing scandal involving
no less than 200 games - 3 of which were in the Champions League and
12 were in the Europa League - so these must be recent games. This is
apparently "the biggest match fixing scandal ever to hit Europe". 50
raids and 17 arrests have been made in Germany, Switzerland, Austria
and the UK. Despite UK officials helping with the enquiry, none of the
games under investigation were played in the UK. The break down of
games being investigated by tournament is as follows:
Champions League: 3
Europa League: 12
Austrian First Division and Lower: 11
Belgian Second Division: 19
Bosnian First Division: 8
Croatian First Division: 14
Hungarian First Division: 13
German Second Division or Lower: 32
Slovenian First Division: 7
Swiss Second Division: 22
Turkish First Division: 29 *hangs his head in shame*
and an unspecified number of games from the European Under 21
championship.
Anyone in rss'land have any more on this?
[Is it just me - or this story infinitely worse than the ref and
linesman not picking up on Henry's handball??]
2) FIFA bans Iraq (current Asian champions) from international
competition after the Iraqi Olympic Comittee disbanded the Iraqi FA.
Police raided the IFA's offices on Wednesday on charges of links to
former President Saddam Hussein. FIFA don't like government
inteference in football.
3) Rubin Kazan - today crowned Russian Champions for the second season
in a row, thanks to a 0-0 draw at home with Zenit St Petersberg (well,
Spartak slipping up to CSKA might have also had something to do with
it). Congratulations to the men from Tatarstan!

I think we are in denial or disbelief?

No that is all the info I have seen/heard about it, though it will be
interesting to see if more of the "bigger" leagues get caught as well?

Now they can concentrate on the Champions league and try to restore
some Russian pride.

Posted about it yesterday, but as you say, this subject must not be as
fun as whining, posturing or riding hobbyhorses.

2-3 of the men arrested were central figures in the 2005 German
referee fixing scandal too. Go figure.
Match fixing? Bah, nothing new. Lets take Spain.
1. 2 seasons ago, Celta got relegated to the segunda at the expense
of Athletic. Apparently everyone ( including Ángel María Villar )
knew what was going on when Levante gave their game against the
Basques away.
2. Last season, Tenerife ( specifically Jesuli ) took money to
lose their final game against Málaga, who were promoted at the
expense
of Real Sociedad. Again, very well known.
When someone like Villar knows everything and it still goes on,
there is not much to say.
