Most people seem to ignore this "in a year" bit. Extrapolating to
winter 2022, I just don't see players like Neuer, Messi and Ronaldo
being the best at their position any more, but of course I could be
wrong. And all of our predictions are based on unwarranted assumptions
about injuries.

Neuer is in his peak age for a keeper and is the best keeper in the world right now, would expect that to be the same next year. Ronaldo relies more on fitness, so I suppose you could argue time catches up to him next year, except that he keeps himself in phenomenal shape. Messi is the most skilled footballer of this generation (maybe any generation), by a healthy margin, time may catch up with him and it is hard when you realize you can no longer do what you could, simply due to losing flexibility and physical ability, but he will still have the skills and footballing brain, so would not write him off until it really shows that age is affecting him. So yeah, your argument is wrong.
