Hello All,

I recently read a post from Debbie on wanting information on purchasing
a new sled. I as well am needing information, but only have $1500.

I am brand new to the sport and have started looking in the want ads.
Suggestions from locals here (northern Colorado) have said the Yamaha Phazer
is a good reliable sled to buy. Do any of you have any suggestion for me as
to what to look for in a sled(miles, under carriage, ran into tree, etc.) to
look for as well as maybe a good manufacture(probably be in the 85-87 model
year).

Thanks,

Jim.

Jim,
It is going to be really hard to find a sled in the $1500 range that
doesn't need some work. Watch out for cracked tunnels. If you plan to ride
really hard stay away from the Phazer, especially any with engine mods. I
have seen too many go into a meltdown. This is usually a problem in the
spring when it is warm since the Phazer is air-cooled. I would recommend an
Exciter myself, but thats just my opinion.

Three words have helped me in my snowmobiling interests: "Ask your
friends" Luckily, I am surrounded by eople that know about sleds. I can
ask them just about anything. In teh years you're looking for, it may be
extremely difficult to find something around 1500 without high miles or
previous damage. Around here (Michigan) finding a sled for that price is
highly unlikely. Be sure to check the hood for any signs of cracking, or
fiberglass repair. Your best bet is to take a friend with you that knows
sleds when you go and look for one.
