Nothing to back this up but I believe it would be around 90mph
under good conditions, solid 85 most anytime.

My 97 ZL440 (same engine) has registered between 85 and 90MPH. Speedometer
accuracy?? Good luck finding pipes, I couldn't find anyone that makes them. I
did buy a 53 degree helix to change my shift points and give me more low end
power ($20 at AC dealer.

My wife has a 98 ZL440. She loves it. She went down in size from a 96
GT500. She's only got 600 miles on it this year and our last trip to
northern Maine she had it at 98 MPH on the speedo across a lake and on the
trails.

What the hell are you doing 98 mph down a trail for?Trying to play tree tag
or become a statistic in '98?

Normally I would agree about the speed on the trail issue, but having ridden
thousands of miles in northern Maine, I can tell you there are many places it
is safe. Some trails in northern Maine run for miles across open potato
fields. These trails are groomed double wide with a berm in the middle. If
nobody is ahead of you, and you can see all around, a quick blip to top speed
doesn't hurt a thing. I had my V-Max 600 to 90+ (indicated) a couple of times
this winter in these conditions. Some of the railroad beds can be treated
simularly, but I would caution not to due to the chance of a game animal
stepping out of the woods in front of you........

Which proves that AC speedos have become even less accurate than Polaris
speedos...

My friend's '97 ZR440 reads about 8-10 mph higher than mine at 90 mph on the
trails. And I've heard that Polaris speedos are way off already. I think
older AC speedos were more accurate.

(BTW, Mark, we were riding 90 mph on the trails to check how our speedos
compared. Just in case you wanted to know why. ;-) )

One more thing-- For the original poster, Sam, I'm not sure if anyone makes
twin pipes for the ZL 440 but I'd strongly advise against going that route
anyway. The ZL 440 has a 68 hp or so motor. Even if pipes add 10 hp (which
they will do only in the advertisements) you'll still be better off buying the
95 hp ZL500 that you really want. Save your money.

Matt's right...there are a lot of places on the trails in "The County" that you
can run right up to top speed or close to it and still be quite safe. An easy
and calm cruising speed is 70 to 80 mph in my opinion. He's right about the
game, too. A friend of mine nearly pegged a deer at 70 when it stepped on to
the trail and began running right parallel to him. Just some thoughts.

Just a cent or two from Gary Smith (again).

I have the ZL-500 with the est. HP (96.1) and I managed 95 mph within two
tenths of a mile (pond). I was locked right next to my friend's ZR-600-EFI
after about 75. He pulled me down low as he has studs and I don't. But the
9 HP difference and EFI fine tunning didn't really show much difference on
that 40+ degree day! Can't wait to change the jets! I would have love to
not run out of room to see just how long these two machines would stay next
to another (((-; Maybe next season....

That was 98 indicated on the SPEEDO .. Which would
translate in Real MPH to about 88/90 on radar.

The trails in the county are straight and flat, you can run wide open with no
problem. By the way, I've already played tree tag this year only doing 40 and
totaled the sled, I'm on my second ZR this year alone. Tree tag ain't fun, but
we had to get somewhere in a hurry due to a problem with one of the riders in
the group. We usually only cruise at 60-70 mph so we pushed it to get where we
were going.

I don't have a problem with how safe it is, but a piston port 440 going
90+ MPH. Maybe down hill with the wind at your back. Don't believe your
speedometer, because it is not correct. The ZR440 with the case reed
engine and a LOT more horsepower probably won't break 100 MPH. I would
say more realistically 80 to 85 MPH. Sorry to disappoint you.

Or probably less. Especially without studs.

FWIW ZR 440's are in that "indicated" area and they have a whole lot more
go than the ZL 440.

Geez, My 1973 El-Tigre 400 will run 80 mph (if you can keep it on the
ground!) My buddies ZL 440 will run away from me beyond 80mph.
Horsepower does'nt mean shit...getting it to the ground, and up-shifting
through the power-band efficiently gets you the speed.
The ZL has the technology to efficiently use the power...my old Tiger
wastes most of the power digging holes and skipping across the snow.

I saw an 80cc motorcycle run 127mph out at bonneville...HP???

That WAS a 'radar' mph reading, right? Estimated HP of 96.1 - pretty

Ok on the 85mph on radar.

That really doesn't mean much when `we' don't know what the distance was !

At one of the snowfests in Vermont I attended, they had radar setup. My '88
El Tigre did 70mph in 600 FEET !, and that is without studs !! That machine
has around 88HP.

Your 440 has 68HP. Check the numbers and report back... There is almost 30
HP difference between your ZL and my ZL...(-;

Yea! ya always hear that, I have a freind who's buddy has a hot 440
race sled and when i told him I ordered and 500 of a another brand, the
next day or so he said, when you get that sled he (the 440 owner)is
waiting for that 500, he smokes all 500's he told my freind, well on Nov
14th of 96 we got are first snow, it was about 7 pm we were riding in
some fields, I'll never forget it, had 11 miles on the sled and here
comes a sled accross the field and it was this 440 racer, my buddy
introduced me to him and the first thing he said to me, is it ready and
i said well i only have 11 miles on, but I'll give it a shot, well to
make the story short, there was no contest, 6-8 sled lenghts maybe more.
i was happy to shut up a bragger, well we went back to the shop and a
few other locals came by and asked what happened, because the word was
spread out for a year about this hot 440 waiting for my 500. things were
quiet nobody wanted to discuss it, so i did not bring it up either, so
now this Brand loyal group, finally accepted and see the light that they
can get smoked by other sled brands too.

Tyler;
I understood the gist of your post, didn't seem that hard
to understand. As you were saying, lots of people say their sled does
100 mph, when they are maxed out beside you on the lake and your more
accurate speedo says 85 mph (for example) Very, Very commom . Giving
your sleds peak speed on it's speedo is like telling your potential
girlfriend you have 16 inches tucked away. She's in for a real
disappointment when she gets an accurate measurement !! :-)

I got a kick out of your posts. I have a '97 Indy 500 that I freely
admit won't go over 85 in most conditions. The funny part is I have a
friend that has a '97 v-max 600 that he claimed would go 100. Well, at
the end of a long field, he had me by about one sled length. I never
looked at the speedo, but I am pretty sure it didn't go over 85. The
only time I saw it go over 85, I was on a frozen road that was going
down a slight grade for about a mile. That time I hit 95 and had to let
up because I caught up to my friends.

Just look in Deja News for "chet". Read his posts and you will see what
he rides. You might even read about the other sled.

We were probably doing are last ride last night here in PA, temps
going up. but i hear the same thing this machine and that machine does
this ect, well last night, there was this RXL that the owner claimed it
hit speeds in excess of 100 mph, he has 144 studs and i think it is a
650 cc triple cylinder. I told him accross this field of 1000 feet i hit
approx 86 mph. and he said he hit 90 plus. well to make a story short we
lined them up 4 times and 4 times my 500cc twin has won by at least 4-6
lenghts. and i keep thinking i need a bigger sled, but after the BS
clears it's the finish line that counts, yes, you hear it all, mostly
all the time when a sledder claims he smoked this and that, but they
never tell ya when they got smoked. I got beat quite a bit of times, I
like drag racing, but I am really enjoying tuning my smaller 500 cc sled
to it's maximum potentials.

My wife's sled is a 1988 Polaris 400 Classic. It will run an honest 95
to 100 mph down a long road with minimal snow cover. My 1997 440 LC
with the long travel is not nearly as fast down the roads as her sled.
The older 400 sleds had higher compression (more power). The longer
travel tracks also take more power to turn at higher speeds.

Maybe you should get a lie detector, I mean radar gun test. When you go
a 100 MPH for real on the gun it seems awful fast, speedo readings can
be deceiving.

IMHO Snowman...
