I have a project that I've wanted to do for a long, long time and I'm
about to start gearing up to do it.
I'm going to begin hoarding parts and information starting today to
build an ultra light snowmobile based on the Indy wedge Chassis
(probably a '93-94 XLT or Indy 500 or 440) with a 670 Rotax. I figure
the snowmobile will be purchased this year, preferably with a 136"
track and with the old motor either shot or - even better - removed.
That shouldn't be too hard to find. If I can only find a short track,
I'll probably fab a custom tunnel and go ahead with a light drop and
roll chaincase if I go that route. I now have the shop and the
resources, so now's the time to do it. The year of the sled doesn't
matter too much, since the only major changes in the wedge cahssis
after 90 was the rear skid, which I will be replacing with a stretched
Expert X. So.....if I could find something without a rear skid and
with the motor blown, I could save myself mucho dineros.
Anyways, the search starts today for the machine and for advice. Has
anybody here ever done the swap or have any info on it or a similar
swap? I know there were a ton of mountain guys doing this switch
before Polaris intro'd the 700 twin and I'm sure there is a lot of
info available.
If you have info regarding:
1 - drop and roll Polaris chaincase
2 - clutching combo
3 - gearing ratio
4 - tunnel angle for powder
5 - motor mount plate compatibility
6 - pipe routing
I'll be gathering lots of information personally as well, but if you
have anything to add right now, shoot it my way.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Rob

Are you sure that's not supposed to be Precision-Performance?
NEXT Q:
======
Can I fit '95 Mach 1 stock twin pipes under an Indy Wedge chassis
hood? I'm thinking maybe, but I know I couldn't pull it off in an
S-2000 chassis! That's my other donor option.

Doug Ritter, who I don't think has been reading this group this season, put
a 583 into a 1990 or so Indy 500 chassis. It is still running in the hands
of another owner who also posts here occasionally. Doug did a good job with
it. He sold it because he felt the front end was too inferior to the long
travel of today's sleds. He had put the 40" or 41" Poo kit on it.
He also had put an Xtra-10 skid into it and he wrote up a series of articles
for Snowmobile Online, which is at www.off-road.com/snowmobile.
I am not sure if the articles were for the skid work or the whole deal. I
think it was for the whole deal. I do remember he rolled the case. You can
probably email Doug at do...@infinet.com with questions. Be nice. :-)
