What was the first sled you could call your own??
Mine was a Rupp American with an AMF ski-daddler motor on it :o) I was only
13? and got the sled and motor free, did all the work myself. I don't know
how the motor ever pulled the sled it came off.. The Ski-daddler had the
widest track I ever saw on a sled and it had reverse. The motor survived the
sled, and later I put it on a go kart :o)

After High School I bought my first "New" sled.. 1978 Ski-Doo Blizzard 6500
Plus. Anyone ever owned one of these?
Years later I had 3 Kawasaki's. 340 Invader, 440 Invader and the mighty 550
Interceptor.

Bought my first sled with money from a paper route. Used 74 AMF/Harley
Davidson 440. Wow, did it ever look fast and stylish in all its red white and
blue glamour. Wow, it was a total piece of shit! All track, tippy, gutless,
junk. Bro Cousin and I killed it on a Sunday, what fun. Aww shucks, thanks
for the memories Evel. BTW, owned a used 77 FA 340 Sonic that opened my eyes
to hi-po light weight. Used to warm up the Sonic holding up the rear with one
hand, working the throttle with the other. Too bad it lacked structural
integrity.

1976 AC Panther. My brothers and I spent hours getting it to run so we could
ride it for minutes! We had quite a ritual to make it run. See I'm an AC guy
from way back. Not as far back as some of you.

First ride on a sled for me was on a 340 Sno Jet, hook got set real fast.
First sled of my own was a used '74 Colt 250 SS . Nothing like that "bumper
car " look on sled. Top speed 45 mph on a good day but it had juice brakes
so late braking in the corners helped. A totally reliable sled and worth
every bit of the $100 I paid for it in '82. The next year I stepped up to
a '78 TX 440 piped, ported, etc. I still miss that one.......

<snip>

Cool thread. My first rides (with old man) were '68 Olympic one-lung, '67
Snocruiser 207 and eventually a '73 Olympic 399. My Dad taught me the
controls and I "drove" at age three. By age six I was riding the 399 by
myself. Over the years, there were several other "beasts" that appeared - a
SnoPrince that would belch gas and flames out the carb (right at your nuts)
and a BoaSki that never steered (that sucker was nothing BUT push).
Motoskis and more Skidoo models.

After that, it was a long time that I was working in Toronto and Montreal
and didn't buy *my* first sled until Fall of 1998. So I bought two! 1999
Mach 1 700 and a 1999 Formula Z 500 for Renee. Since then, traded the Mach
1 after two years for a 2000 Special Edition MXZ 600 and built it up to 'X'
standards, traded the Formula Z for Renee's Legend GS 600 and bought my MXZX
800 in the fall just past. Next year, I will be buying a REV 800 SDI if
available and trading in one of the MXZ's.

While I always had sleds to ride, never owed one until recently.

First rode gramps 69 Olympic then graduated to a 1972 Panther with a 70(I
think) 295 1 lunger in it.... Man that thing would take a jump! Sound like
it was coming apart on landing but would fly straight as an arrow with the
gas tank in the back.... Weird... Funniest this I remember was whenyou
couldn't see the ground cuz the cowling would fly up in front of you when
you jumped it... Rode it home with only one ski one day (the other across
my lap) 6 miles! Bet it wouldn't be as easy on a new one and it wasn't easy
on that one! :-)

In the mid '70's I got into sleds, I was about 15. I've owned the following.

- '69 Ski-Doo Olympic
- '67 Massey-Furgeson Ski Whiz w/ 370 JLO Single.
- '68 Polaris Mustang, my first twin, had 20 inch cleated track, electric
start.

(four years pass while at college)(btw, I bought a Hodaka 125 dirt bike in
school and rebuilt it in my dorm room).

- '75 Snow Jet 340, I stuffed in a 440 fan.
- '80 Kawasaki Invader 440 Liquid, my first liquid, MAN was this thing FAST.
Also first sled to trailer.
- '85 Arctic Cat 'El Tigre 5000, First sled to make it onto the Tug Hill
around 1990.
- '87 Arctic Cat 'El Tigre 6000, my first sled with Independant Front
Suspension. None of my freinds could keep up now, I could fly on the bumps.
- '91 Polaris Indy 340. Small engine but light weight, put Fox shocks in, I
could pound all day in the bumps.
(several years off while the kids grow up)
- '95 Polaris Indy 500, Put in Boivin Expert rear skid and wide front end
kit.
- '02 Polaris 600 Classic, 600 VES, electric start, reverse, M-10. My first
new sled, cool. Reverse, will never own a sled without one. 600 VES, highest
HP sled to date for me, I love it. M-10, very plush ride.

I also owned many dirt bikes, ATV's, cars, trucks, vans and street bikes. I
like anything with an engine.

Then the first REAL sled was a 79' Blizzard 7500 340 LC, all fiberglass
jobby. Man I had fun with that thing. Polished tunnel, Kalamazoo stickers.
"Custom" windsheilds. Some day I'll own another one just to look at. I
wouldn't want to ride it, cuz that would mean I'd have to constantly work on
it...being a Ski-Doo and all. ;)

First sled that was mine was a 73 Ski Doo Elan 250 SS that my father bought
me when I was 12. Though none of the old center mounted engine chassis
would turn worth a crap, I had more outright fun on that thing than I ever
have since. You could thread it through the woods and make your own trails
to pristine untouched hills and fields for hours of play. It would climb
hills that other big mills couldn't top.
Lightweight?? I think it would have floated if we went through the ice.
Dads first ride was 67 Polaris Mustang, then a 70 Doo 399 Nordic, 73 399
Nordic, and all of them were scary. All these old sleds except mine are
still sitting in the barn. But, 2 years ago, Dad bought a 74 Elan 250
SS...I'm gonna fix it up.

I don't know what year single cylinder Ski-Doo...I bought it for $25. Might have
been an Olympic. No hood, the seat was a boat cushion. The gas tank was in the
belly pan and had a big hole in it, so I used a gas tank off riding lawn mower.
No recoil, rope around the clutch worked good though. Talk about light, one
person could just about throw it and this thing never got stuck but only topped
out around 30mph.

That thing was a blast until the ski spindle broke off and the only neighbor
with a welder wouldn't help us fix it.because he thought it was a death trap.
The motor later went on a go-kart and it would smoke the big riding mower tires
we had on it.

First sled I rode was a Polaris of early 60's vintage. It had a steel chain
track about a foot wide or so not sure, think of it in the terms of double
roller chain only it was multiple roller like maybe 30 - 40 or so. It had a
8 hp motor would get stuck almost everywhere, us kids had a blast on it.

Next sled I rode was a 15 hp Polaris Colt I think 1965 vintage. Best sled a
kid could have!

Next was a 69 Rustler 19 hp. It was the first sled to become mine.

In order after that.

74 Moto Ski Futura 440 Nicest riding handling sled of its time to bad it got
stuck in a foot of snow. Rubberized cleated track absolutely useless.

78 Moto Ski Futura 400 Which when the motor went after 1700 miles I replaced
it with a 669 out of a double track Ski-Doo. Wasn't very fast after that,
but it would pull a sleigh with two people in it while riding double up hill
at 50 mph. Want to talk about torque?

77 Ski-Doo 440 TNT FA Ate more pistons than I care to remember! Fast for its
time quite powerful. Just to damn temperamental! Put a 440 FC out of a
Olympic in it for running on trails. set it up on a motor mount with carb
attached and just swapped motors back and forth would take less than a hour
to swap engines. FA for racin FC for riding.

77 Ski-Doo 440 TNT FC Loved this sled. Bought it to have a second sled for
the wife and I.

98 800 Pantera Raised a Family so sleds went on the back burner for a while.
All I can say is WOW have sleds changed!

2000 1000 Pantera Same sled more WOW!

2000 600 ZL Wife's sled but she can't keep me off it. I have to say I really
like this sled.

else fell apart. Still was great fun to be out on something. Sold it to
buy a dirt bike. Later scored a 72 Boa-ski 440...fast and uncontrollable

'79 Polaris TX 250 in a '78 Polaris TX 440 body.

What a great sled - it was a lot of fun. Looked like crap but ran
great - it did about 68 miles/hour down the road. The track was held
together by the cleats and peices of seat belt.

I bought it from and older friend but I never actually registered it
in my name (only had it for 1.5 years). It turned out the 440 had been
stolen about 10 years before and never recovered. Boy, was the guy who
bought it from me pissed off - I won't do that again. Of course my
friend played dumb and didn't know how it could have been stolen.
Funny, he was the one who did the engine swap.

Replaced it with an '86 Indy 400 (bore out to 440). It took me into a
fence post that was bent over and survived better (belly pan bent in a
bit, cab cracked/scratched, still sitting upright running) than I did
(busted knee (ow!) on the other side of the fence).

Great post Evel. Look at all the folks that responded that we hardly ever
hear from. Everyone has fond memories of their first rides.

I had a T,N,T can't remember the year but the beast had carb probs and
like
others said, the ritual of playin for hours to get it started & then running
it for a few minutes was the game ...Then we stuck a 640 allouette in a
bastard frame that was way too small , hung dingle balls all around the
windshield , a batwing antenna off the hood like on a limo & a couple curb
feelers on each side. We went to Tip Up Town in Houghton Lake Michigan &
because we had Afro hair on our helmets and called ourselves Sno Bro's we
we're not allowed in their safari run they held that night! The first real
sled I rode was a 73 Scorpion Super Stinger 400 RV & that sled was one that
never gave me a lick of engine trouble. My riding buddy Bill had a brand new
80 Exciter & I would have to ride into the turns while hanging off the sled
circle track style to even dream of keeping up! I broke the rear parts of
that Pararail suspension at least twice a year & we knew at least a hundred
different ways to get to the Scorp dealer thru the woods.Ah youth but once
we got to Bucillis for a pizza all was well . The Crows Nest in Houghton
lake makes me happy to this day just by driving by!

First sled was a 1970 Ski Doo Nordic 399 with 18" wide track, very
light, it did about 50mph on the lake, but every large storm I had to
break the trail for everyone or they would get stuck(I miss that). Then
I bought a 73 Ski Doo TNT 340 Silver Bullet, did close to 70mph. Hit a
hidden stump covered with snow, flew right over the handlebars landed on
my head feet in the air, bent the front grab bar(I guess thats a
stumpjumper!). We welded brackets and a shock to the bogie suspension
and it really helped in the bumps, it was a pretty good lightweight
machine, fun through the woods. After that:
78 TNT 440
80 Kawasaki Invader 340
82 Yamaha SS440
89 Polaris Indy 400
95 Polaris Indy 500
97 Polaris XCR 440 (Project)
I still have all of them except the TNT440, the Nordic (or what's left
of it) is a pile of rust (steel tunnel). Tom.

1968 Yamaha 396 at the Dealership I worked for. Rode it in my suit the first
time. You know Snowmobiling is one of two things a man can really love. But at
least you can ride your sled all night long. 800SKS for next year.

1973 Chapparral Firebird 340. Bought it used in Empire Michigan from a dealer
who delt in Sno-Jets. Loved that sled from age of 13 until I left for the Navy
at 18. Would go like crazy but the suspension was not the greatest. Gave it
to my little brother when I left home and he wrecked it.

Ya hey der! My first sled was an Exciter with a 600. It was -45F up at Hoppy's bar in Kenton on da UP. I came out of the bar and started the machine to let it idle and warm up. It was so cold that the flywheel shattered and so what was I to do but go back into Hoppy's and get likkered up till da weather broke. kw
