Just read in a mag that ski-doo was supposed to be ski-dog but was changed
because of a typo. Anyone ever heard of this? It would be cool to have the
cats against the dogs.
Just a thought...

That's true.
The name was originaly Ski-Dog, to compete against Artic Cat.
There was a typo in an add that called them Ski-Doo, and the people
in charge liked the name, so they stuck with it.

In reply to my own message: I was informed via e-mail, that the typo part
was true, but that
Arctic Cat didn't exsist at the time.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Actually, the typo was not from advertising but the name painted on the hood
mad the G look like an O (the design of the letters was squashed).

The meaning of Ski-Dog was to compare it to a dog sled not to Arctic Cat!
Snowmobiles did not exist back then. This was the first of it's kind.

Not true! Arctic Cats did not even exist when the word "ski-doo" was
used. Furthermore, "ski-doo" was invented by a French-Canadian by the name
of Joseph-Armand Bombardier many years (early 1900s) before Arctic Cats were
built. The word "dog" in "ski-dog" is an english word so I do not see the
French speaking inventor from the province of Quebec using an english word
in the name of his invention. He invented the early snowmobiles to provide a
personal vehicule for people to travel from one village to another during
the winter because in those days, the roads were not plowed so you either
used snowshoes, or skis. The snow was sometimes too deep even for horses and
sleighs.
Point your browser to the Joseph Armand Bombardier Museum if you want
more details.
And on top of that, Arctic Cats were originally invented as machines to
stomp on the millions of wandering arctic lemmings who when left to their
own, gnaw the insulation on the arctic pipeline.

I work at Bombardier in Valcourt. It's true that originally, the name of
Ski-Doo was Ski-Dog and a typo error on a paper changed it to Ski-Doo.

There was a very interesting mini series produced in Quebec about the
life of Joesph Armand Bombardier. Its probably available on video, I
recommend it to any one who snowmobiles and regardless of brand you
own. In this mini series you will see the details of how the name
came about.
