Last year I posted the part numbers of all current ('96) helixes available
through Polaris. For low bucks compared to many aftermarket helixes you
get OEM quality and durability.

If anyone is interested I can post it again for this season...

Yes, Michael, please repost the available OEM helixes from Polaris. From
what I understand a certain aftermarket company sold clutch kits for XLT's
and XCR's (now XC's) consisting of a Polaris helix (42-38-34) and a
Polaris blue spring. It really improved the performance and sold for
around $125. You can buy the same helix and spring from a Polaris dealer
for about $55. It would be nice to know what's available.

In article <4vuqsj$4...@newsbf02.news.aol.com>,

The primary spring you can't though... That is a VERY important part
of the kit. In fact we dropped that primary spring into an otherwise
stock 96 440 XCR Sp and the thing really came alive. Also the $125 kit
contains weights. Woodsman is very good at what they do. They can also
vary the kit depending on rider weight and usage... BTW I bought the
Woodsman kit (XLT Sp) on the result of net opinion... It works and at
a fraction of the cost of some other aftermarket companies. If you
don't want to fiddle with unknown combos give them a call.

OK so heres the Polaris helix numbers... These are last years so there
may be a couple new ones I've yet to see in print (I know they have at
least two new primary springs - a dark blue as in my XC 440 and a
reported almond)

------------------

Polaris has some nice helixes; (all of these are for P85's! I do have
some numbers for P90's if anyone wants them)

40-36 5130898 40-36
T1 5131013 42-36-34 (Woodsmen 5th gear kit uses this one)
R1 5131287 40-32 (96 600 XCR SP)
R2 5131288 42-32
R3 5131289 45-32 (96 STORM/SKS/RMK)
R4 5131290 50-32
R5 5131291 40-34
R6 5131292 42-32
R7 5131293 45-34
R8 5131294 50-34 (96 440 XCR SP)
R9 5131295 40-36
R10 5131296 42-36
R11 5131297 45-36
R12 5131298 50-36

*If using a R1-R12 ramp, use two additional .030" (.8mm) washers
under the snap ring, for a total of three washers (All models except
Storms or models using gold driven spring PN 7041501. On these models
use only the existing washer)

These part numbers and the instruction came right from the race
manual. I've seen the T1 and R8 helixes. The R8 begins life as a
straight 36 and it gets machined to a progressive ramp. The T1 is cast
just like a stock one... I've been told to make sure whatever helix
you use make sure it has a steel center. (all these do) Billet cuts
without the steel center will wear faster and begin to chatter.

As Michael Hart pointed out, you also get weights, and a primary
spring. After you install it, if you're not satisfied, they will work
with you to mod it. The silver primary spring they use is NOT a stock
Polaris spring. I have the numbers on it, but you can only get it from
Woodsmen. I believe it is worth the $. and it come in at less than 1/2
the price of most other clutch kits!!!

Yes, if you know what you are doing using some of the cheap available
factory parts can save you money. If you don't or want a drop in set-up
just call them. They aren't making a ton of money on a set (unlike some
others who will charge up to $300 for parts that may not even equal
factory quality).

Clutching is a combo thing. There's no single part that makes any set-up
special. [Typically] It could take up to 4 drive springs, 4 sets of
weights, 3 helixes, 3 driven springs to make that magic combo. Lets see
that's 4x4x3x3=144 different combos! Some may be real stinkers...

Yeah my fingers get cold too!
