Well I am about to purchase my first sled. I have rented many times in
the past few years and now it's time to get my own. I am looking at
buying a two up trail sled so my wife and I can enjoy those sunny winter
weekends together.

I was looking at a new 2001 machine when I came across a 1998 Yamaha
Venture 600 in excellent condition. It has 2500km on it. It still looks
new. The dealer is asking $6500 Cdn. This is $3000 cheaper than a new
machine so I was quite interested. I can buy many accessories for $3000!

Can anyone give me some advice as to whether this is a reasonable price
of such a sled. Any general comments on the quality/reliability of the
Venture would also be appreciated.

Alan:

I'm not sure if the price is "in line" or not on the Venture. Take time
to look through a local "RV Trader" and compare price. My opinion:
Yamaha is making "the better mousetrap" in this industry --- you'll be
getting motorcycle-quality fit and finish and won't be disappointed with
your choice. As I recall, it's a good, solid ride, quiet and burns a
little over half the fuel my '98 Pantera 580EFI Arctic Cat does for the same
distance. Mileage doesn't sound terribly high at 2500km (I've got 9000km
on a 93 Yamaha utility sled --- no troubles)

Hope that helped. Best of luck. Norm.

The Yamaha is a great sled, but I just want you and your wife to make sure you
really want a two-up machine for the both of you.

Many folks seem to start out thinking this way, but real soon the other partner
wants to ride their own. (This is a good thing and should be encouraged!)

The significance of determining this now is that if you decide you both want to
ride your own, it will be cheaper to buy two single seat sleds now vs buying a
two-up now, and another single later.

And for $6.5K, you can get two decent sleds now.

I agree with Matt 100%. Lots of friends tell me that they are looking for a
2 up sled so that they can go out as a family. If they do go so far as to
actually get a sled, and not just talk about it, they find out really quick
that sitting on the back sucks. Either they get a second machine REAL quick,
or the spouse quits the sport, and then the other is left with a 2 up
machine by themselves. it seems that you cannot convince them that 2
machines are better than 1, until after they have tried the sport. However,
there is an endless list of beginners who feel that 2 up sleds are the only
way to go, so there is a big demand for lower priced 2 up entry level sleds,
low price being the big feature here. Just some points to consider, you know
your wife better than I do, she may be the type who wants to sit on the
back, and there is nothing wrong with that.

A word of advice. It it not wise to go out on just One sled. I mean if you are
in a group of people thats not bad. But if you go out and want to "enjoy the
sunny winter weekends together" by yourself on one sled it could turn out to
be the worst winter weekend. It would suck to have to walk like 50 miles out of
a trail because your sled broke down I myself would rather have two sleds to go
out on. 2up sleds arent too fun to ride with two people on them. If you are
just beginning and want two good family sled for not alot of price look at the
polaris's SuperSport, its a 500 fan. they are cheap and very reliable. Pretty
comfortable to ride too as my friend has one. Or look at a used arctic cat Z
440 they have really good suspension and are pretty reliable sleds alos. good
prices on them.

Al - another option is to check with your dealer and see if they have any
2000's left. I snow checked a 2000 Venture 600 this past spring and saved
over $1,000 off the price of the new 2001. I will still have the full
warranty which doesn't start till I pick up the sled in another few months.
I think $6,500 might be a little high for a 1998 Venture. I think the 2000

quite a bit better machine for not all that much more. The 2000 model was
about $8,000 Cdn.

I considered all the pros & cons of the 2 up vs. two sleds. There is no
guarantee my wife who seems to enjoy riding with me now will want to
continue to ride on the back or ride at all for that matter. If she wants
to have her own machine - all the better. The Venture has a fully
adjustable rear seat and I hear it is not bad riding one up either. I
still plan to do a lot of that myself.

The $1,000 I saved did by some nice accessories including delux cover, 12
volt accessory outlet, gas shut off and yes even a trailer to haul it.
Overall I think I did the right thing but time will tell - now all we need
is the snow. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Welcome to snowmobiling Alan. This is what i did, i bought a sled that i
liked ( 700 PSRX me and my wife love it ) and then bought a "Seat Jack" all
it does is slide into place and my wife hops on the back, I used it all
last year and no problems just another suggestion. Here is a site you can go
to if you want to take a look at the Seat Jack. www.snowconnection.com

All

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions in response to my post.

I ended up purchasing a 2000 Venture 600 left over from last year. I paid under
$1000 more than the 1998 and got a brand new sled!

Now I just have to be patient and wait for snow.

If anyone in the Ottawa area is looking for someone to ride with this winter,
please drop me a line.

Thanks again

That sled is 14 years old. Offer half of what he is asking.........that is still a good price for it.

BTW... There are Avalanche warnings at Hoppy's bar in Kenton. kw
