Is there anything to the rumour that Bombardier bought out Polaris?
I know they tried to buy Polaris out in the early 80's but some federal
law (Can or US) disallowed it .

No offense Gerry, but Bombardier is a multi-BILLION dollar company, it in fact
DOES have enough money to buy both Polaris AND Arctic Cat, if they so desired.

That being said, I have heard nothing regarding this rumor and highly doubt
that it is true.

Even though I don't why they would want to buy polaris and I don't mean to
cause a riot, sled manufacturer fight, etc. but Bombardier is a huge
company, and could buy polaris without too much trouble. If you didn't know
it, sled and PWCs are a tiny, I repeat tiny piece of Bombardier's business,
they build trains, fighter jet planes, passenger planes, and a multitude of
extreme snow condition machines, just to list a few of there products.

Some quick financial information 1998 revenue in excess of 8.5 Billion
canadian dollars so even with the crummy value of the canadian dollar that
is well over 5 Billion U.S. dollars. Don't have total polaris figures but
1998 revenue was just over 1 Billion dollars.

Now mind you that is just revenue when you start looking at balance sheets
like total assets on hand, etc. there is no competition.

I have to admit, I enjoy reading some of the replies from the die hard brand
loyal crowd. In the early 70's I rode a rupp, a snow-jet in the late 70's,
yamaha in the 80's. I now ride a ski-doo. If I were going to buy a sled this
year it would be a polaris. The only thing brand loyalty will insure is that
you will be riding the best sled on the market 25% of the time.

You got that right.... Bombardier is a Huge corporation.... they
probably could purchase both the american sled makers, but like the
president of Ski Doo said. it's the competition that makes sleds keep

That's for sure... Bombardier is a huge company who by comparison only
dabbles in recreational products.

And given their continuing red ink on RP one would doubt expansion by
acquisition would be viable. Polaris, as Chadek mentions is a publicly
traded company so a premium would make it very expensive.

Besides *if* (big IF) Doo already makes the best snowmobiles all the
customers will be flocking to yellow anyway... :^)

Just a quick tidbit on Bombardier. In 1994, I bought stock in
Bombardier. Since then, they have
had two 2-for-1 stock splits. I now have 4 times as much stock &
equivalent value. 400% increase in less
than 5 years. Stock analyists are predicting 30% growth yearly for the
next 3 years. I'm buying more stock!!!!!!!!!!!!

Income: (in Millons, Canadian)

Motorized Total
Consumer Bombardier Corp
Products Includes all division world wide

1998 $1.4 $420.2
1997 $212.3 $406.2
1996 $176.3 $158.0
1995 $116.8 $247.3
1994 $76.6 $177.3
1993 $28.4 $133.7

Copying the RAVE concept instead of stealing the actual product is the only
way Polaris could stay out of the courtroom. As for "different side of the
combustion process".... they are both varying the exhaust backpressure in
one form or another and therefore are functionally the same. It should be
more refined and sophisticated since it took Polaris nine years longer to
come up with it. One would expect technology to be far better. You fail
to mention anything about RER. I guess Polaris will call theirs PER in
about nine or ten years. Finally, comparing sleds with supermodels and drag
queens ???? I rode both Polaris and Bombardier and I think they are both
fine machines, however when it comes to leading edge technology, there is no
question that Bombardier tips the scale in their favor.

RER is interesting... Is it owned by Bombardier or by Ducati who makes the
CDI units for them?

BTW Polaris already uses the Ducati boxes in some sleds....

Why is this so ridiculous? What happened to skidung's famous PRS
suspension? Hint: you won't find it on a Polaris or Cat. Seems like
quite a coincidence that a windshield off a '98 MXZ will fit right on my
'90 polaris hood......

Speaking of inspiration, Polaris can thank 'Cat for the Torque Sensing Link
(Polaris calls it the XTA) on the rear suspension and the Extended Travel
Tunnel (Polaris calls it the Dual Angle Tunnel) that Polaris has
incorporated into its new 1999 XCR 440 EDGE sled (also Yamaha for the one
piece die cast aluminum front bulkhead).
They all steal/share/borrow technology that works, so what's your point?

Does anyone have any tips on performance modifications for a 97' ZRT 600? I am
a fairly large guy and am tired of those pesky SkiDoos beating me accross the
lake.
Thanks,
DD

Better get Cat's performance manual for your sled. Lots of good ideas and
things to check in that manual. You can get one at your dealer. I have a
bone stock 96 ZRT600 and it consistently beats 700's when lake racing.
Forget about trail racing. You'll hit a tree and worse yet, another sled.
Here are things to check next time you're out:
1. Put a piece of tape on the tachometer and make sure the engine is going
around 8300RPM's at full throttle.
2. Check your clutch drive belt and if the edges are slick replace it. New
belt is slightly rough.
3. Top speed of stock ZRT should be around 110mph.
4. A bunch ( I use 196) of studs will give you good take off at start.
Remember most races are lost at the starting line. If your ZRT aint
studded the track will spin and you will lose lots of speed.
5. Don't be a cheapskate. Spend $30 and buy that performance manual. Read
it, live it, do it!!!
6. Find a dealer that is into racing. They will help you set your sled up
for top performance.

Have fun - Joel

Polaris copyCat? You're confused. If that was true than Polaris'
would be falling apart on the trails...

KTM has also had power valves on their dirtbikes since the early
80's. ....mind you -Rotax built their engines. But who really
cares?

Look at Polaris now: they've got some GREAT domestic engines, aren't
Americans proud of this? Even though they may have incorporated others'
ideas into their design, building a motor that strong and reliable at
first attempt is no small feat. Yamaha also builds its own engines,
Skidoo on the other hand, cannot say the same. Sure Bombardier is
technologically up-to-date in their engine department, but the motor
better be good for the amount of money they're funnelling abroad for
it. Being Canadian, I'd be most interested in seeing what sort of a
motor Skidoo could domestically put together.

HELLO, Bombardier owns Rotax, I'd say they might know what there doing,
there have been more more Rotax engines in the winners circle in the last 30
years than (this is a SWAG ((scientiffic wild ass guess)) than all others
combined!! LATER, JOE

Polaris came out with IFS and Hydralic brakes in the late 70's but Ski doo
refined them them to fit there chasis and all around make them better and the
Polaris took those designs and said they refined them. It has a decade or so
since polaris finally put a new brake on there sleds and that is only because
of poor braking marks on all there sleds tested by magazines such as Am
Snowmobiler, and SnowGoer. If you would like to continue this chat e mail me

If they were more like ski-doo they would probably go out of business.

They already have cylinder reed engines. The 550 and their 440 in the XCF both
have cylinder reeds.

I work with a guy that worked at Polaris when Textron still owned them in
the early 80's. He says Bombardier tried to buy Polaris but the US
government stepped in and nixed the deal over monopoly fears.
