I have a '97 FormulaZ and instead of trading it in for a faster machine I was
wondering what the best or most practicle performance mods would be. From what
i've heard/read the 583 rotax is pretty good out of the box. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Craig,

Is your sled studded??? Without a doubt the most performance for the buck is
studding!!! You can get more power, better clutching etc, but unless you have
traction you have nothing. Start with studs, make sure your jetted properly for
the conditions (factory jets are generally fat), and tune your clutch to your
liking. Start here see if you still want more, and them get into the heavy
mods. Some of the other folks here can speak to pipes, clutch kits, engine mods
better than me. I'll let them pick up from here

Lean it out slightly and adjust the RAVE caps. Another possible
choice is a roller secondary and a more aggressive set up on the
drive clutch.
Probably the most helpful is leave the motor alone but try and reduce
the sled weight as much as possible. Anywhere and every where will
improve it. The biggest drawback of my MX-Z is the weight compared to
the others.

Studs help performance? Not in snow which is where most of us ride. The
most effective accessory for the dollar is Hyperfax... It should add 5 MPH
to top speed, 1-2 MPG and you'll forget how to change hyfax it lasts so
long.

One person says studs, another says Hyperfax because it
adds 5mph top end. I say, Craig didn't give enough information
about the kind of riding he typically does. Without that bit of
info there is no way to answer his question. What do studs do if
you ride powder? Nothing, but Craig didn' say what kind of
riding he does. What will hyperfax do if he isnt' riding at top
end all day (how many of us do?). Again, Craig didn't give
enough info. If you ride in upstate NY on the iced over twisty
wooded trails, then studs will help and hyperfax won't do
anything for you becuase you seldom (if ever) can hold it to the
bars long enough to reach top end.

So Craig, what kind of riding do you do? and what is your
goal is seeking increased performance? is it better top end?
better acceleration? quicker cornering??

My experience does not agree with this. It is what the mfg says, but not
what I have seen. I sold three sets,( Polaris), I used one myself, (Cat).
The wear was slightly better than stock, nice because they smell less and
stick less in marginal conditions. I will not do it again though as $150
retail and $125 delar cost is TOO expensive for what they do.

Performance, 5MPH forget it. Stick with the aftermarket $20 graphite
ones.

Unless you ride in 100% powder, studs will offer better performance. If
you follow in someones tracks, you are riding on a packed surface of
sorts, and studs will help. Grommed trails, best performance mod for the
buck, maintains a quiet, stock reliable sled.

Markus.
