What is this about a recall on 67,000 1999 polaris snowmobiles because of
defective brakes? I haven't seen anyone here complain about a problem with
the brakes on the 1999 polaris snowmobiles. Anyone have a problem?

Yes, I think it involves the much discussed rotor warpage/pad wear issue but the
full article wasn't available through yahoo. The stock price dropped 1 1/2 pts.
(3+%) on higher than normal volume today. Hopefully just overreation from the
announcement.

Polaris recalls 67,000 model 1999/2000
snowmobiles

CHICAGO, July 19 (Reuters) - Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII - news) on
Monday said it was recalling 67,000 of its model year 1999 and 2000
snowmobiles due to a potential for brake failure.

Minneapolis, Minn.-based Polaris said it had received 17 reports of brake failure,
but no injuries have been
reported.

The recall, made in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
includes all 1999 models
with hydraulic disc brakes and certain 2000 model-year Polaris snowmobiles, the
company said in a statement.

The snowmobiles that are part of this recall have the word ``Polaris'' written on the
front of the hood and the
sides of the seat.

Registered owners of the faulty snowmobiles will be notified by mail, the company
said.

Shares of Polaris were $1.63 lower at $41.44.

Like you said, I haven't heard anyone complain about the 99 brakes either. I
have, including myself, have heard MANY gripes with the 98's wearing the pads
out pre-maturely and rotor warpage, but apparently Polaris doesn't feel that
the people that own 98's are worth taking care of. Before you get all upset
with the last comment....Polaris wasn't willing to deal with the problem in 98,
when the sled was less than 2 months in service and they still were unwilling
to deal with the problem in 99 (thru Dec. 31st) when the sled was still under
the remaining year of factory warranty. Aparently they must have figured that
since the "wedge" body was going away, so would the problems and complaints of
the riders that owned them! Well, I guess they were kinda right, I switched
brands this season. :)

I realize that no one made this statement up... I just wonder what they
(Polaris) are trying to say? Sounds kinda silly, don't you agree?

CPSC, Polaris Industries Announce Recall to Repair Snowmobiles

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), Polaris Industries Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn., is
voluntarily recalling about 67,000 snowmobiles. The hydraulic disc brakes on
these snowmobiles can fail, resulting in serious injury or death to riders.

Polaris is aware of 17 reports of the brakes on these snowmobiles failing.
No injuries have been reported.

The recall includes all 1999 models with hydraulic disc brakes and certain
2000 model Polaris snowmobiles. The word "Polaris" is written on the front
of the hood and the sides of the seat of these snowmobiles. The snowmobiles
were sold under numerous model names and numbers, and in a wide variety of
colors.

Polaris dealers nationwide sold these snowmobiles from June 1998 through
July 1999 for between $4,000 and $8,000.

Consumers should arrange now to have their snowmobile's disc brakes replaced
for free at their local Polaris dealer before the winter riding season
begins. Polaris also will replace the snowmobiles' brake pads at no charge.
Registered owners will be notified by mail, and will be contacted by the
selling dealer to schedule an appointment. For more information, consumers
should contact their local Polaris dealer. To locate the nearest dealer,
call Polaris at (800) POLARIS between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m. EDT Monday through
Friday, and between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. EDT Saturday and Sunday.

I'd agree.

It makes it look like ALL 1999 Polaris snowmobiles could be recalled.
It also makes it look like they sold 67,000 snowmobiles last year. :)

The 67,000 sleds, I believe is the number of sleds, they made between
June '98 and July '99. that have these recalled brake components installed.
This recall does effect ALL '99 models except the Widetrack LX and the 340cc
sleds (Indy, Deluxe, and Touring) Some of the 2000 Indy 500s and some
XC500s were not recalled do to the fact that they installed the improved
brake components during manufacturing.

Check out Polaris' websight, they have a complete listing of all sleds
affected by the recall, some of the 2000 Indy 500s and some of the 2000
XC500s weren't affected, they had the improved brake components installed
during assembly. You need to know your sled's VIN number, before checking
the list.

Yes, there were several of us complaining. My brake pads were nothing
but DUST after 200 miles. My dealer said it was because I trailer with
the E-brake on. Yup. Uh huh.

Guess I'll get that refund on the brake job now.

FYI: Polaris states that ALL 1999 models are affected by this recall,
except for the following:

Widetrak LX (099su4bs), Indy 340 (099lb3as), 340 Deluxe (099ld3as) &
340 Touring (099lt3as).

The official recall notice (at the POLARIS website) says that owners
will receive letters, but don't hold your breath on that. Call your
selling dealer to schedule an appt. for the brake replacement (free,
incl. pads).

I thought I heard some folks complain about premature brake pad failure
and some actual fires caused by hot brake rotors, but I want to say they
were '97 or '98 model years.

I have got one of the first run XC700 and I had all the updates done and the
brakes were not one of them, but I will tell ya it sure burned the brakes up
fast, I have got it clutched real tight so the back shift is pretty harsh so I
really don't need to use the brakes alot either.
