Thanks to everyone who replied to my earlier request. Most replies
indicated that the CCM's were the best choice. However, due to
availablility in my geographic area, I find that the Bauers may be easier to
find. However, one warning. The Bauer Pro Composites are not yet readily
available. I have had a pair on order for 1 month plus. I have talked to
Canstar and they keep saying that they will be shipped any day. I hope to
see them soon.

Many stores have just gotten the first shipments of the Pro-Comps.
The skate rips.
If CCM were sooooo good, why would 72% of the NHL skate on Canstar skates
(only 10 players get the skates for free). CCM actually pays players to be
on the skates, and they can only get, less than 20% of the NHL.

RHI is even worse--over 80% on Bauer. The pros might have the right idea,
besides--good luck with the CCM revolver chassis.

Hey that's just my opinion--and I rep Bauer--Ken

Well I just watched the Ottawa Loggers practice this weekend (they are a new
RHI
team) and lots of the guys use CCM. I'd say that it was primarily CCM, then
bauer and 4 or 5 guys on Koho and a couple I didn't recognize. As far as NHL
goes, I don't know where you get your stats of 72% being on Bauer but if you
actually watch an NHL game you will see LOTS of player using CCM. You can't
miss the white ankle support and you see them everywhere. I play 3 or 4 times
a week and I see about half and half Bauer/CCM.
This sounds like a "mine is better than yours" debate. It shouldn't be. They
have two different boot fitting philosophies. I have tried on Bauer everytime
I have bought skates and they just don't fit me well. They are loose around the
ankles for me and seem cut too low. CCM's on the other hand fit me tight around
the ankle (and I tape up as well). Some people hate tight ankles and buy Bauer
and have lots of movement at the ankle. Others like me tape up and wear CCM and
skate with a rigid ankle. Others like the Bauer fit and tape up as well. In my
experience of about 28 years of steady hockey, many guys are either CCM men or
Bauer men. Not because of brand loyalty, but because of foot shape. There is no
way you can say CCM makes an inferior boot.
There is also Micron when it comes to ice skates. They make a very good boot
as well.

What do I wear.....CCM 652 Pump Tacks (on the ice). Many guys at the Loggers
training camp seemed to be wearing CCM ice skate boots with aftermarket frames.

The CCM/BAUER debate is a no brainer....buy the one that fits you best. And buy
the best ones(top of the line), the cheaper ones may look the same but they are
not even close.

I agree. I have tried Bauer many times- fine skate, but too narrow for
my wide foot, with large arch. CCM fits well. I have been very pleased
with my SuperTacks on ice, and consequently went with CCM Tacks 552
for inlines. Have not had problems with the Revolver frames.

In article <3pbjud$o...@usenet.ins.cwru.edu>,

The interesting thing (to me, anyway) about CCM Tacks is the incredibly
long wheelbase, especially for a hockey skate where you would expect a
short wheelbase for fast cornering. I was recently looking for a street
skate with a longer wheelbase than my Powerblades for general street type
speed skating and found that the Tacks had a longer wheelbase
than any of the street specific models I could find.

Bauers all the way!!! I had a pair of Bauer H/3 for two years. They were
the best skates I've ever had besides my new Rollarblade Tarmac CE's.

If you're looking for hockey skates, don't overlook the new Koho
skates.
I had a pair of Bauer H-8's, and just recently purchased the
Koho 4500 IR's. Excellent skate.
The Koho has an aluminum frame, takes up to 80mm wheels, good spacers,
and Boss ABEC-3 bearings. It's a SOLID boot. Did I mention how solid
it is ?? And it's more comfortable (IMO) than either Bauer or CCM.
Try 'em on before buying Bauer or CCM hockey skates.

(don't know if this thread was hockey skates or not, but seemed it)

You obviously have not tried CCM skates. I can't get a pair of Bauer
hockey skates to last more than 2 years. I bought a pair of CCM 652
Ice skates and stuck my rockered Sure-Grip frames on them and all my
problems went away. I should have known better since my ice skates
are CCM Super Tacks.

The point is, it's in the opinion of your feet. On my feet the Koho's
were much too narrow, with a low arch. The CCM on the other hand feel
wonderful (not suprising since I wear CCM SuperTacks on the ice). They
are all good skates. Try them on, get the one's that fit best. All
feet are not made the same.

Interesting debate - my kid needs new hockey skates (ice). Hes been on CCM
352s for a couple years. IN my telephone search (trying to find his size
in the summer in Boston isn't so easy) at least two dealers tried to
convince me to dump the CCMS and go to Bauers. They claimed that CCM has
been bought out by some Japanese shirt company, and the quality is going
downhill!!!. Doesn't make much sense to me, 50% of the pros are still on
tacks, must be that they are getting a better slice of the $ for the
Bauers? We're going to stick with the CCM 352s or 552s (652s). Comments?

I currently work at a hockey store in California, and I have been
fortunate enough to have complete access to the major skate
manufacturers' catalogs, and haved talked to many people about hockey
skates.
In general, the Bauers tend to run more narrow, and the CCM boots tend
to fit people with wide forefeet and a narrow heel (I wish I had known
this when I bought my Bauer's!). Just try on different boots, and
there will be one that will be more comfortable than another. Another
skate which has good feedback, albeit on the pricey side, are the Mega
Air 90s. Also, if you are thinking about getting 652, check out the
Kevlar versions which should be arriving at stores soon.
I've heard nothing about CCM being bought, but on a more interesting
note, Nike did buy out Canstar which produces many of the hockey boots
and products (Bauer, Koho, etc.)..

actually, as of a few years ago, when i bought my skates, 58% of the NHL
players were wearing Bauer, 17% had CCM, 11% had Micron, and 14% had 'other'.
i haven't heard anything about CCM (Sport Maska) being sold, but i do
know that Canstar (Bauer/Cooper) is/was going to be bought by Nike.
still, Bauer will probably just be a subsidiary of Nike, dont' look for a
swoosh on their skates anytime soon. FYI you can reach CCM at 1-800-451-4600.
