Is it easier to begin with a traditional brake pad?

Well, I'm not the poster you replied to, but after two years I'm still
using the Roces system. It never brakes unintentionally, because I've
set it really tight. Then again, it doesn't stop me as well as a pad,
but doesn't get in my way either. I have it _real_ tight, since I weigh
100kgs and have changed my wheels from 76mm to 80mm.
If those are the ones with the "moving" wheels (when you brake) then
yeah, a traditional brake is much easier. That system slows you down if
it's even a tiny bit too loose, and won't do any good in stopping you if
it's too tight.
I got used to it and used it for two summers. Just yesterday I was
coming down a hill and there were some bozos in the way so I had to
break real hard. The piece of metal that comes in contact with the last
wheel came loose and jammed itself between the frame and the wheel.
Fortunately this happened when I was already on level ground and slow.
I had to take the wheel off right there, and use the pliers on a
Leatherman tool to get the metal piece out of my skate. So now I have
reduced braking power, because I only have the one metal piece that
touches the second to last wheel left. Not to mention the fact that the
jammed brake shred my pretty new Hyper X-fit 80mm wheel to a pretty bad
shape, grrr!
These systems weren't made for big people going fast, and I guess I'm
lucky that I wasn't hurt and that the system didn't come apart earlier.
Time for new skates, methinks.
