Hawaii (808) - All Areas

====

[ to...@mpg.phys.hawaii.edu (Antonio Querubin) ]
There are supposed to be some [outdoor?] public mini roller skating rinks
somewhere around Honolulu but I don't know where they are. If you're in
the military, Hickam AFB and Schofield Barracks also have roller skating
rinks.

I don't know if there are any roller skating rinks on the outer islands.

[grr]
There is nothing currently listed in the Hawaii phone books that even smells
like a roller rink, though there is an ice rink in Honolulu - The Ice Palace
at 4151 Salt Lake Boulevard, and also various outdoor skating opportunties.

There is one surviving USAC/RS Artistic club in Kahului on Maui, although
what they use for a skating rink is unclear.

There was a newspaper article in April 1996 that talked about an
attempt by the owners of this rink to sell it to the Salem municipal
government. Apparently, it's owned by a partnership with many members
and they are intersted in cashing in on the investnmet. The city
declined, saying that such operations were better off in private hands.

As far as I know, it's still operating, under the same ownership.
It is the only large rink in the area between Portland and Eugene.

[ web gleanings ]
Recent improvements for roller hockey at Skate Palace include regulation
roller hockey markings placed on the floor. The rink also has netting
which fully encloses the perimeter, in order to keep spectators safe
from flying pucks.

All hockey activities are organized through the Salem Roller Hockey
Association. If you would like more information please call Chuck
Litchfield at 503-588-8642.

I went down to the Oaks (in the Oaks Amusement Park) and they had this
enormous pipe organ. I can't imagine them playing things you can't
dance to, although maybe pipe organ music may be a bit much if that is
ALL they play.

I don't remember, but it wasn't that crowded and I was able to practice
my spins even though they didn't allow me to practice any jumps.

[ mer...@techbook.com (Randal Schwartz) ]
Oaks is still there. It'd better be. It's the oldest and largest rink
in the Pacific Northwest (since 1920-something, I think). They still
play the old pipe organ (the pipes hang over the center of the rink)
on some sessions, but Friday and Saturday nights are top-40 from records
(and maybe CDs).

I attend a "private" session there on Sunday nights which is mostly
rap-ified soul (and some good stuff too :-). It's run by a private
group (the "Rose City Rhythm Rollers") and it's for members only, so
we can pretty much play what we want (well, OK, what the DJ wants :-).

[ this 10 PM Sunday private seesion is still happening, though the ]
[ group may currently be called the Cross Cultural Rhythm Rollers ]

[ g...@tharsis.com ]
If you're in Portland or even Seattle, don't miss this gem. As
mentioned above, this rink has a real Wurlitzer amusement park/theater
pipe organ, with the pipes, drums, bells, etc suspended out over the
center of the floor. The organ is played Wednesday, Thursday and
Sunday nights. Thursday is the official "adult night", but Sunday
night seemed to be mostly artistic skaters with a few randoms thrown
in. The floor is also quite amazing - it's large, with the boards
wrapped around the oval for an extremly smooth rolling surface and is
kept in very good condition. There's also a separate strip across
the rear of the rink with a funhouse style wavy surface, just the
thing for practicing your 3-turns and backwards edges. There is also
a very tiny square practice floor alongside the main floor.

An interesting feature of the rink is that the park is located on the
flood plain of the Willamette River and it does get flooded out now
and then, such as the winter of 1995/96. The floor of the rink is
acutally set up like a raft, buoyed by some 250 55-gallon drums. When
the water rises, the floor is cut loose from the building and floats
above the surface until the water falls again. After that, it's just a
matter of cleaning out the muck in the surrounding areas.

Oaks Park dates back to 1905, though the current rink building was
apparently built in the 1920's, with the floor dating to 1948's. As
an amusement park, Oaks is really rather modest, with mostly carnival
class portable rides. The antiquity seems to be mostly in the the rink
and a kiddy theatre, no big roller coaster or carousel. However, area
residents are quite fond of it as a park, picnic and recreation area.

[ web gleanings ]
A Lesbian & Gay Rollerskating night is sponsored by the Rosetown
Ramblers Square Dance club at Oaks Amusement Park on the fourth Monday
of each month. Please bring canned food items for Esther's Pantry, a

Rollertown is part of the 49'th Street Galleria, an indoor family
entertainment complex which includes bowling, miniature golf, batting
cage and various ride, game and restaraunt/party areas. As a plus,
it is open throughout mall hours 7 days/week, as a minus it's a family
entertainment rink, aka for the kids. Admittedly, this is a trait
shared by all Utah rinks, the other rink I visited was even worse.

The floor, supposedly Utah's largest, is some kind of blue plastic
over a plywood or similar base. It was smooth, but seemed pretty
slow, especially with the tattered rental skates available. Skating
at dinner time provided a fairly quiet, uncrowded session tending
towards more kids as the evening wore on. Late Sunday afternoon was
also rather quiet, with less than a dozen people sharing the rink.

The rink has sort of a stage at one end and is apparently also used
as a concert/show venue at times.

Classic Recreation, aka the Henderson Family, owns several rinks in the
Salt Lake City area - in the Salt Lake suburbs of Sandy and Bountiful,
also in Provo/Orem and in Ogden. I assume the rinks have some degree of
common managment.

I skated at the one in Sandy, their idea of Adult skating was "all ages"

this is because Rap and House derivitive skating music doesn't play well
in the family values/family entertainment community. The floor was painted

The skating floor is wood, with a plastic coating and about medium size.
It's in average condition, with it's share of bumps. It is often dirty,
but I believe they are planning on refinishing it. There are figure
circles. The rink isn't very well lit or ventilated, I don't believe
that it's air-conditioned.

Auburn has a strong artistic club. I've skated competitions here, and
it can get a bit busy during the dance events. The owner, John Gustafson,
is really involved in speed, while his wife Diane goes to Nationals every
year in dance and figures. Their daughter, Cassie Davis, also skates
and she is nationally ranked.

They have fairly normal session times, with an adult organ dance session
on Friday mornings, and I also want to say a Monday night dance session.
They didn't have any games during the public sessions, just some races.

Skate King has an ugly linoleum floor, but good music, and on occasion

[ litl...@slumberland.com (Wendi Dunlap) - edited some]
Several of us were looking for evening sessions so that we could start
going skating at least once a week. I used to take artistic roller skating
lessons (and also a bit of ice skating lessons), and I want to get back
into skating. However, weekend evening sessions are, in my experience,
impossible -- they are so crowded that there is no room to do any skating.

So we were looking for a weeknight - Only one rink, Skate King in Bellevue,
had a session on Thursday nights an adult session for 18 and over. so we
decided to go there.

We went to Skate King for several weeks in a row -- and it was pretty bad,
so I don't know if we'll be going back. Why was it bad? Well, it was VERY
unfriendly to beginning skaters. I'm not a beginner, but many of my
friends who were with me are, and they were afraid to go out on the floor
much of the time. The emphasis on Thursday nights seems to be on the
"roller disco" sort of skating that everyone was doing back in 1980. :)

The rink is full of people skating as fast as possible, doing little dance
steps all the way along, and weaving around all those going slower than
they are. Those who aren't skating fast are skating in groups of four or
more, gabbing with each other and not watching their surroundings. Certain
people there go so fast that they are unable to get around other skaters
without grabbing them hard by the shoulder and pushing them out of the way.

Both my friend Shari and I had bruises on our shoulders from one particular
guy who grabbed our shoulders at two different times one evening. I didn't
really think it was a roller derby session, but after that I wasn't so sure...
This particular skater commits skating violations that would have gotten
him busted by the floor guard at any other rink I've ever attended, but not
this one.

We overheard a beginning skater complain to the management that there was
no room for slower skaters out there, and the rink manager said, "Well,
this is an ADULT session. It's not for beginners." As if adults never
learn to skate? He recommended that the beginner come on a weekend, and
she said she had tried that but that there were too many tiny kids and no
room to move. The rink guy shrugged. What kind of attitude is this, I ask
you? Hmph.

Also, the rink floor is dirty and in bad shape - there's a nice big crack
in it, and it's bumpy. The music was poorly chosen (4 Janet Jackson and
2 Madonna songs in one evening) -- come on, let's have some variety!
And, of course, requests were ignored.

[ I've included pretty much the whole rant, less some ice skating stuff ]
[ Some of what she describes scares me - this doens't sound like a very ]
[ well run rink - but other things make it sould like my kind of rink! ]

[ ma...@george.ee.washington.edu (Mauro Costa) - edited ]
I understand her [Wendy] frustration with the rink she mentioned, but I
still think it is an ok rink, if you are not a beginner. I go there
myself when school is not in session.

[ sbeck...@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ]
Skate King is a rink to the east of Seattle in Bellevue, and is really
nice. It's well lighted, with a somewhat small, blue plastic floor.
The floor is currently in the process of being stripped, and so the rink
will be shut down from July 29-August 5 [1996] for refinishing the floor.
However, the size of the floor is made up for by the ambiance of the
crowd.

I normally skate here on Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings. As
the summer has begun, these sessions are thinning out. They still play
the Hokey Pokey and other games like "Four Corners", "Red Light, Green
Light" and they have races, backward skates, and reverse skates. The
music is enjoyable, although they tend to play too much "hip hop, fast
paced music" which can get to be a bit too much for beginners.

This rink is solely a skating rink, with no artistic, speed, or hockey
clubs - it's just a normal session rink. The floor is fairly clean and
nice to skate on. There are no figure circles marked. They have an
adult night on Thursdays which is quite fast paced, but no organ music
or artistic sessions. As previously mentioned, Sunday night is mostly
compromised of a select group of adults and a smattering of a few others,
and the camraderie is good. Some of the other weekend sessions can be
quite packed.

At the end of the rink, there's a mural of Seattle, complete with the
Space Needle and the Kingdome. What is really interesting is that on
the right hand side of the far end of the rink, there's a "skate car"
that looks street driveable! I'd love to ask them if they'd sell it!

Everett is the nicest of the two rinks north of Seattle, with an
average size plastic over wood floor. The floor is basically very
clean, and they also have a very small surface outside for skating,
which is open in the summer months.

The have normal session times and the sessions are normally pretty
crowded, with many teenagers, so the floor can be pretty unforgiving
at times. They have a metal detector in the lobby - the neighborhood
is pretty rough, though it doesn't look like it.

I've only skated there on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This past
winter [1996], they had an adult dance night on Mondays, and I am unsure
if that is still going strong. They do have figure circles and also
a "jump harness" for freestyle skaters. There is an artistic club, but
it's mainly for the younger skaters. The coach doesn't teach adults -
prejudice! - so I kind of have mixed feelings about this rink.

Bremerton has an average or smaller than average sized floor, but it
was pretty clean. There are figure circles. They have an artistic
club, but it is small, also speed and hockey clubs.

I skated a session there, and was pleased by the DJ's pick of music,
the DJ really gets involved with the music. They did have the Hokey
Pokey, but no other games, just some races.

The Lynden floor is wooden, and it seems to be comprised in part of their
old floor, which was burned in an arson fire last year and in part of an
old floor salvaged from the closed Burlington rink. The floor is pretty
clean, though it's a bit bumpy and uneven. I think the citizens of Lynden
are just plain happy to have their rink back after the unfortunate arson.

Although the rink seems smaller than some in the area, it has a lot of
"homey" atmosphere to it. Lynden is a very religious town and is quite
subdued, and this seems to be reflected at the rink's sessions. They
are crowded, mainly with lots of families. No games during the sessions
and I don't know if they have races. They do have a backwards skate,
but the floor guards are very stringent and they they don't let you
skate backwards during the rest of the session. I didn't like this part.

Lynden has a strong artistic club, the teachers are Jerry and Marlene
Bruland, from a rink in Bellingham that closed in the mid-80's.

The Lynden Skateway, owned by Pete and Brenda VanOrnum, totally burned
down to the ground on August 20, 1994. They rebuilt the rink building
and purchased the skating floor from Joy and Don Baldwin, who had been
storing the maple floor since their rink was closed a few years back.

Lynden Skateway re-opened for business in February 1996. The floor was
enlarged to 164'x84', larger than average, though there a wealth of
large floors in the Northwest.

Skateway has a strong competitive artistic club. The full time coaches
are Jerry and Marlene Bruland, Dale Sprague, Caroline Diewold. The club
is also active in proficiency test and recreational skating. There is
also a newly founded speed skating club at the rink.

There is a special Adult Sesssion with dance music played on Tuesday
Mornings, and a Special Dance Session are also being scheduled for
next season - once a month on Sunday evening.

For more information about this skating facility, please contact
Marlene Bruland - MBru...@aol.com.

Normal session times and prices.

Marysville has a smaller than average wooden floor. The floor is very
bumpy and often pretty dirty, and the rink isn't too well lit. They
have a small artistic club coached by Joy Baldwin and Jackie Scott.

I have only been here a few times recently, although I used to represent
this rink when I skated competitively for them in '92. They ha normal
session times and prices, with a Tuesday night adult dance session with
organ music.

I work at The Roller Barn, Inc., which is the local skating rink, where
I am the Assistant Manager. I am in the process of starting a speed
team, so that we can compete with other teams in the area, and around
the country.

Oak Harbor is in the Pacific Northwest, about 90 miles North of Seattle,
on Whidbey Island. Whidbey is well known for it's Naval facility, NAS
Whidbey Island. I am one of the few people around here that is not
affiliated with the Armed Services.
