I just picked up a pair of used hockey style skates which i had been
wanting to try. The fit was so good i couldn't pass em up. The wheels
were badly in need of replacing and also replaced a couple of stiff
bearings with some old abec 3's i had laying around. New aluminum
bearing spacers and they didn't skate too bad. My question is in
regards to the bearings in the skates. They are non serviceable
(shields not removeable) yet when i apply drop of oil to inner part of
shied it makes it way into bearings. The only thing it says on the
shields of bearing are " acro 101 " and " zz809 " are these abec rated
bearings or should i just scrap them, Thanks in advance for any
comments. This is all just for fun my K2 76's are working out quite
nicely just wanted to see how my soft boot experience transfers back
to a hard boot. Any comments on bearings would be appreciated.

Hi Kevin,
I think you read the zz809 from the top, if that's the right
english phrase.
You're bearings are most likely 608zz, that tells you, that they're
the normal inline size and the zz means something with the shields...
If the bearings are Abec-rated it's typed on the bearing.
That means your bearings are not rated and that they are, in nearly all
cases, not so good.
Not because of the rating, but non-rated are often of bad quality.
(except Boss Swiss, Bones and some other)
Ciao
Andreas

Thanks Andreas, maybe i'll keep a few of the better ones around for
spares and go ahead with a set of abec 3's. I can get a set around
here for about 30.00 us dollars for 16.

The z's mark the number of shields on the bearing so there
should be a shield on both sides.

First, you are reading the writing upside down. You will find it should
read 608zz. The 608 is the size characteristic of the bearing(608 is the
inline standard) and zz means double shielded. Now, if there is no ABEC
rating on the bearing, then it generally isn't ABEC rated. This doesn't
mean that it is a bad bearing. It may just be that it is an older bearing
that was made before ABEC was really around, or the company doesn't bother
with ABEC(and if they are just making general bearing, who can blame
them).
ABEC ratings mean next to nothing for an inline skater. So long as it is
an precision bearing to some degree, it is fine. The stiff old ABEC 3's
that were lying around are probably worse than the ones in the skates, if
the cause of the stiffness is rust or a bad race or ball, then the ABEC
rating will no longer describing the bearing tolerences. This is infact a
great example proving that ABEC is useless for skaters. A bearing that
probably isn't o ABEC tolerance still feels as good as an ABEC rated
bearing.
Nuff said.
