It's also good to see Slutskaya rally in the long program to garner a
silver medal, after a 4th place in the ahort program.
Liashenko must have been injured last season but she seemed to be an
up-and-comer a couple of years ago. But ahead of Czako??? Czako must
have had a bad night.
And how about the plunge of Sydne Vogel? Or poor Leticia Hubert, who
was 6th or 7th at World last year? My , oh my!
Now comes the guessing game of which of the above performances will be
shown by FOX TV. They have to show Tanja because she won.Irina, maybe,
because she is a "name." However, how much do you want to bet that
Sydne will be shown, just beause she is the American on the team.
Should we be so lucky to be shown snippets of Liashenko & Czako instead?
Dance came off as expected: Krylova/Ovsianikov first, Anissina/Peizerat
second & Romanova/Yaroshenko third.
Today, it's on to the men. Can Michael Weiss (a.k.a. "Christine
Brennan's Poster Boy") climb his way up to the podium after a weak short
program (4th or 5th place, I believe)? We'll see. Cheers - Jeannie

Slutskaya was 5th after the short program

I doubt the will show Sydne. Fox didn't show American performances from
competitions last season. Tara Lipinski missed out winning Nations Cup by one
first place ordinal last year, and the network didn't even show a clip of the
performance. They only showed a clip of Tonia Kwiatkowski in the Series Final.
Fox only has an hour and a half of coverage. I'm sure they will show Elvis,
probably Tanja because of the comeback factor and Irina because of her name.
There is a good chance they will show Bereznaia&Sikahrulidze and
Woetzel&Steuer because they are big name pairs. Would all of that fill up an
hour and half provided there are bound to be features?

This is absolutely fantastic!
: 2 Irina SLUTSKAYA RUS 4.5 5 2
: 3 Elena LIASHENKO UKR 4.5 3 3 (what do we know about her?)
We know quite a bit, although it's not well publicized. Here are some
of her highlights:
10th - 1993 World Juniors
19th - 1994 Winter Olympics
6th - 1994 World Championships
2nd - 1994 Nations Cup
3rd - 1995 European Championships
9th - 1995 World Championships
2nd - 1995 Skate Israel
5th - 1995 Nations Cup
4th - 1996 European Championships
12th - 1996 World Championships
3rd - 1996 Skate Israel
6th - 1996 Nations Cup
5th - 1997 European Championships
1st - 1997 Nebelhorn Trophy
3rd - 1997 Nations Cup
That's a pretty good career, eh? In 1997, she didn't go to the Worlds.
Yulia Lavrenchuk represented the Ukraine. She finished 9th, which is a
worthy result and as good as Elena probably would have done. We'll
probably see both ladies at the Olympics.
: 4 Zuzanna SZWED POL 5.0 2 4
: 5 Krisztina CZAKO HUN 7.0 4 5 (ooh, I was hoping for better)
I really like Krisztina, but I think if she doesn't land her huge
triple-triple combination, she becomes just an average skater. I have
no problems with her artistic ability, but many feel it's quite weak.
: 6 Yulia VOROBIEVA AZE 9.0 6 6
: 7 Shizuka ARAKAWA JPN 11.0 8 7
: 8 Eva-Maria FITZE GER 13.0 10 8
: 9 Jennifer ROBINSON CAN 13.5 9 9
I read an article that quotes Jennifer landed six triples, which beats
her best performance ever set a couple of weeks ago when she landed five
triples. It could be that she didn't land six clean triples, but she did
stay on her feet. Her skating has improved and now it's just a matter
of achieving the results.
Jen is going to spend the next couple of weeks in Europe training for
Trophee Lalique. When she arrives in Paris a week from how, she
hopes to get in touch with our side of the world (North America) through
her home page sometime to fill us in on details from the Nations Cup and
behind the scenes of Trophee Lalique. Maybe she'll have more details on
the ladies competition.
: 10 Sydne VOGEL USA 14.5 7 11 (ouch. Is she injured?)
: 11 Laetitia HUBERT FRA 15.5 11 (double ouch)
This is really weird... I was expecting better results from these
two. Laetitia's poor showing makes her impressive Worlds performance
look like an anomaly, but she'll be back at Lalique to improve on that.
Sam.

Salchow, toeloop, loop, flip, lutz, that makes 5 triples (I don't think
it is entirely fair to count the triple axel as a "must" for women yet)
The top finisher attempted 4 triples, 2 triple-double combinations,
and 2 double axels (two in combination). She missed the triple salchow
and did a turn between triple flip-double toeloop. She completed
everything else (including 3lutz-2toeloop and 3lutz in isolation)
The second finisher did 3lutz-2toeloop, 3salchow-2loop, 3loop,
2axel (out of a spiral!!) 3 toeloop , doubled the flip.
While there were not perfect programs the top three they were fairly
clean and not entirely holding back on difficulties. Definitely top
international level and even more impressive because of it being the
beginning of the season, as you point out, and some of the competitors
being still far from optimal condition...
Ana
And Candeloro has got more name recognition than either Abt or
Pashkevitch, which didn't prevent him from finishing 4th even with a
decent, if not perfect, skate. So I'm afraid I'll put the TV network
conspiracy theory in the garbage bin ;)

<<Not to say that Slutskaya didn't skate well - but here is a thought
anyway....
Slutskaya had to beat Szwed by 2 plasses in order to gain enough points not to
have to worry about the Series Final - Slutskaya has more name recognition for
Television.>>
This doesn't follow with recent history. Nicole Bobek and Surya Bonaly (both
medaled worlds the previous season) did not make the 96 Series Final, while
skaters like Olga Markova and Hanae Yokoye did. That shows in the past ISU
judges have not put much weight on getting the biggest names possible in
Series Final as opposed to putting the most deserving skaters in the final.

And I quote myself
"
>Not to say that Slutskaya didn't skate well - but here is a thought
>anyway.... "
- Please I am not saying that this was a fact or whatever - simply a
thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is your point that people should not respond/refute your thoughts? If you do
not want people responding to your thoughts, then perhaps you should not post
them.
