I believe these two ladies are trying to qualify for their country as
well. I'm not sure what happened, but the ladies that finished close
to the cutoff of top 24 were axed anyway. It'd be fantastic for Canada
if Susie was 6th among qualifiers, but I think she's still 8th.

21 Jekaterina GOLOVATENKO EST 10.5
22 Helena PAJOVIC YUG 11.0
23 Marta CHISU ROM 11.5
That means that only 14 or the 23 skaters are at the Vienna Cup for an
Olympic spot, right?
I've heard that Susan is 8th among those trying to secure an Olympic spot,
but according to my count she is 6th. (Which would mean she's still,
well--ok!, surely she can hold that weak standing. I'm sure she's working
hard to makes sure the long program goes much better.
Can someone tell me if I'm right (or where I went wrong) with this line of
thinking. Oh well, we will know the final standings tomorrow.

I did NOT like reading that last statement, but I suppose in my previous
"harsh" posts about Canadian women, I said the same thing .... Of course,
Susan IS beter than these results would indicate, but the point is, you
have to do it when it counts. As per my previous post, CONFIDENCE seems
to be a key!!
I have a stupid question ..... all this talk about the OLYMPIC berth
...... will Canada still get to send a woman to Worlds???!!!

OK, so if I had just read further I would have had my answer :-).

Tough break for him, but great break for Australia...I suppose Liu will be
sent to worlds, though?

So it is as some others have said--Susie is 8th. Well, I'll reiterate, I
don't know how Paurova skates, but if she can't beat Human (whom I've seen
skate, and not very well) and Paurova, whom I haven't seen), one has to
ask whether anyone in Canada belongs at the Olympics.

If you're in the ISU,you're allowed to send skaters to the Worlds
quals.Only if you're hosting can you be sure they'll gete OUT of quals.
Here's an interesting thought. If a skater can't handle the pressure
well and has continuous confidence problems, is the skater still a
complete and great figure skater? Susan's technical and artistic
ability are not in doubt, but she's had so many confidence problems.
If you give her 8 out of 10 for technical ability, 9 out of 10 for
artistic ability and only 1 out of 10 for mental ability, that still
only works out to an average skater - 6 out of 10 (I'm making these
numbers up). Of course, since the mental game is so low, it cancels
out part of the technical and artistic abilities. Perhaps down to
4 out of 10 when she's stressing herself out. Meanwhile, a skater
like Zuzana Paurova may only have 2 out of 10 for technical, 3 out of
10 for artistic, but has 10 out of 10 for mental. That's only 5 out
of 10, but confidence boosts her performances and with nothing to
lose, her technical abilities rise and she lands that triple she's
never landed before.
Someone just sent me a wonderful article about Jennifer Robinson. She
talks about how she lost her confidence last year, admitted it (many
skaters probably deny that fact) and then sought help. Now she
says she's become much stronger and has no fear. I was just about
to put it up on her home page, but maybe I'll post it here too.
It was so inspiring I typed it in right away and scanned the pictures.

I don't see why not. All Canada needs to do is qualify like all the
other countries. Canada would only get a maximum of one entry in the
ladies event though, but that's no surprise.

Well, I hate to sound like David Dore, but to be fair, this is not an
exceptionally high standard to have to meet...

That's it. She may be far, far better than this, but if she can't be when
she has to be...

Actually, I think it hinges on this too--doesn't it? Or do other factors
go into that?

Good question - what's the answer ??
kemc.
http://www.usfsa.org/news/news8.htm
says, "Every member country automatically receives one entry in each
of four disciplines." Canada gets to go if they want.

OK, so everybody gets to send one skater and they have to
qualify to get into the short program.
But, who gets to send two or three skaters? Is it the same
as for the Olympics?
kemc.
I believe so. Anyone know any different?
