Three-time men's champion Emanuel Sandhu has withdrawn
from this year's Canadian figure skating championships,
slated for Jan. 16 to 20 in Vancouver, Skate Canada
announced Friday.
Although he had not competed this year, Mr. Sandhu, 28,
had a bye to the national championships because of his
third-place finish in last year's BMO Canadian Figure
Skating Championships in Halifax.
"Emanuel has taken this year away from competitive
skating to assess his goals moving forward," said Mike
Slipchuk, Skate Canada's high performance director. "He
has not ruled out resuming competitive training for the
2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and we support
his decision."
Mr. Sandhu has competed at 13 national championships at
the novice, junior and senior levels, winning senior
men's titles in 2001, 2003 and 2004. He was the senior
silver medallist six other times.
Internationally, the Richmond Hill, Ont., native, who now
lives in Vancouver, has represented Canada at eight ISU
World Figure Skating Championships and was named to two
Canadian Olympic teams. He was the 2003 ISU Grand Prix of
Figure Skating champion, defeating the reigning world
champion, Evgeni Plushenko of Russia.
His place in the senior men's competition will be filled
by Karolin Metivier, 21, of St. Georges, Que.
