Is this the same Kelly O'Grady who has been much discussed here and/or on
Skatefans? That Kelly O'Grady is from Boston and has been Intermediate for
more than one year. I seem to recall her skating Novice earlier this season,
perhaps in Wissahickon. I don't have full results from that competition, and I
know she didn't compete in any event I did, but I thought I remembered seeing
her name in the results. It stuck out at me, because of the discussion of her
here. If this is her, she's a long way from home.

I remember seeing these two skaters from J/I Nationals-- one in pairs, the
other in dance, if I recall correctly. My how they grow up!

Well, I would have expected Amber to win. I'm eager to hear how she skated.
This is also encouraging for Katie Lee, although less so for Stephanie
Chace-Bass. She's the skater who was sent to a NAC without qualifying for
Nationals, then skipped Junior and failed to qualify for Nationals last season
as a Senior. And poor Amy Evidente and Angie Lien; this is not the result you
want if you're trying to return to Nationals.

Alizea, very grateful for the results

Both competed as Singles in Amherst. Ashley's standings are no surprise,
but Marisa's is a slight, but pleasant, one. Her older sister Tara also
skated at this event, but with less success. I believe the Pairs skater
you are thinking of is Heather McCrone of the Coyote SC of Phoenix, AZ.
She skated with Peter Curzon last season; I don't know if she is still
skating with him. The Sharma's and Heather should both be at the
upcoming Golden West Champs in Culver City, CA.

It probably is her. Josh Figurido is also at this event, and they share
the same coach (Tom McGinnis from the Skating Club of Boston).

I saw Stephanie Chase-Bass at NAC in Thornhill last summer and thought
that she was a terrific skater with a bright future, but I certainly
didn't think she was ready for senior level competition. IMO it was a
really bad decision for this girl to skip juniors.

On a personal note - GO KATIE!!!

Yes, Kelly O'Grady skated Novice at Wissahickon. I didn't catch her SP there,
but took the following notes for her qualifying round LP:
3salchow(possibly cheated)-2toe, FI spiral, 3toe(fall)-2toe, 2flutz-2toe,
2loop, layback (pretty nice position) right into a jump (2loop?)-fall, 2axel
(looked cheated)-2toe, another spin right into a jump, 2flip,
camel-sit-layback-B sit(fast)-B scratch(very nice speed).

She wore green and I believe she skated to ballet music. Her jumps are still
relatively low to the ice, which makes it hard to tell takeoffs/landings. She
is a well-above average spinner.

The final ordinals for that group were:
1. Alexandra Jasinowski
2. Stephanie Skavdahl
3. Leah Agler
(The top 3 skaters all qualified for J/I Junior Nationals last season)
4. Emma Phibbs 5 2 3 7 8 5 8 1 1 6/5
5. Kelly O'Grady 6 5 7 4 4 2 7 4 5 6/5

Emma won the TOM tiebreak by 17 to 24 and qualified for the Novice Ladies'
final (top 4 in the 4 qualifying groups advanced).

So it looks like Kelly was trying out Novice at Wissahickon, but will likely
stay Intermediate this season? She has less than two weeks to go before
Regionals qualifying applications have to be mailed by Sept. 1st.

I think Kelly's field moves are also above average.

I would hope that she stays Intermediate another year. The problem
with moving her up too quickly has been that she's never been able to
get any positive reinforcement by winning or placing well in the
competitions she enters. It was kind of sad to see her in tears after
her final-round skate at New Englands last year, because she actually
skated very well -- she was just a little out of her depth competing
against girls who were mostly at least 3 years older than she is (and
who were physically bigger and stronger). I think she might have been
a Juvenile who made it to JI Nationals instead of an Intermediate who
didn't.

Many non-qualifying competitions have a "sandbagging" rule, which
prevents podium placers from previous years from competing at the same
level again. This *may* explain Kelly skating Novice at Wissahickon.

Oh no, I didn't mean last season. I haven't been in a J/I Nationals in quite
some time. I believe that Ashley skated with Leo Ungar in Juvenile Dance once

of having the same name as a toilet paper brand that advertised heavily around
where I grew up. My Skatings are at home, so I will check them later tonight.
I may, of course, be wrong, but I definitely was not refering to last season.

Ashley Thraikill placed third in Intermediate Dance with Leo Ungar at 1997
Pacific Coasts; Marisa Sharma placed first in Intermediate Pairs with Ethan
Burgess. I don't have 1997 J/I results handy, but I believe that both these
teams skated together for more than one season. I seem to remember
Thraikill/Ungar winning a medal (silver?) at 1996 J/Is.

Other notable results from that Coasts:
Intermediate Ladies: 2nd, Jordana Bledsa, 4th, Sasha Cohen
Novice Pairs: 3rd, the Ganabas
Novice Ladies': 1st, NNN, 2nd, Kim Kilby (speaking of SVO...)
Junior Pairs: 1st, the Steiglers

Alizea, happy she is not losing her mind or her memory of skating results

When are Regionals held? Sept. 1st seems awefully early for a
closing date for a fall competition. For competitions where I have been
involved, the closing date for entries is in the neighbourhood of two to
three weeks before the event.

The USFSA has revised the entire competition calendar for the upcoming
season, compared to years past. Regionals and sectionals have both
been moved up by a month, so that regionals are now in mid-October and
sectionals in mid-November. Instead of being held in the spring,
"Junior Nationals" (for juveniles and intermediates) will now be held
in December. Adult Nationals will continue to be held in the spring,
but instead of competing at the regular regionals/sectionals in the
fall, adults will go to new adult sectional competitions held a month
or two prior to their nationals.

As part of the process of moving everything up, entries for qualifying
competitions are now due September 1 instead of September 15 as in
previous years. The way it works in the US is that all skaters who plan
to compete in qualifying events in the coming season must submit their
entry paperwork at the same time -- even if they expect to get a bye to
Nationals, like Michelle Kwan. USFSA Headquarters processes all the
entry forms and sends the lists of entries back to the individual regions.
