NEW WEB SITE:
Skate World
Skate World is a collection of web sites about figure skaters. The
difference between this site and others are the contents of each
skaters' web sites are provided by them. After the success of creating
and maintaining the Jennifer Robinson Home Page that began in 1996
(http://www.spots.ab.ca/~ice/), I set out to create Skate World to help
more figure skaters bring interesting and educational information for
skating fans around the world.
Many figure skaters are interested in creating their own web site, but
either can't afford it, don't know how to build one or don't have the
time to do everything. Skate World helps the skaters with those problems.
The technical details are taken care of by the Skate World volunteer staff.
I've been supporting all the costs right now, but eventually all the costs
will be sponsored by Spots InterConnect, Inc. This way, the skaters
won't ever have to be concerned about the costs.
Skate World has been up since January 5, 1998 -- we just barely made it!
On that day, it had one web site ready: Megan Wing & Aaron Lowe, who did
a wonderful job with their web site. Many more are coming in the very
near future:
Jeff Langdon - his site is open for previews, but it's still being
developed. Jeff spent part of Monday afternoon working on his web site
and provided a lot of interesting information. Jeff didn't specify what
kind of style he wanted for his web site, so any suggestions on what to
create for him are appreciated.
Jennifer Robinson - her site is open for previews, but it's still in
early development. This is Jennifer's second official web site on
the Internet. Jennifer says she'll be providing pictures from her
personal collection for Skate World, including her baby pictures.
Keyla Ohs - Keyla's web site is next in line after Jeff and Jennifer,
but her initial Photo Gallery may be open soon. Barry Mittan confirmed
her interest to me last week and provided a ream of photos. I hope Keyla
will also provide photos from her personal collection and put up some of
her wonderful poetry.
Jacinthe Lariviere & Lenny Faustino - Canadian junior pairs. Lenny is
excited about Skate World and development should start shortly after
Nationals.
Kristy Sargeant & Kris Wirtz - Aaron Lowe thinks Kristy and Kris can
get their site up a week or two after Nationals ahead of Keyla, Jazz
and Lenny. One thing you'll learn is that Aaron is a very ambitious
person. :-) I'm looking forward to see if Kristy will be providing
pictures of her daughter Triston!
Marie-Claude Savard-Gagnon & Luc Bradet - Luc expressed his interest
on Tuesday just before he went to Hamilton. I think Jennifer or Aaron
encouraged them to join. I'll be working with him and Marie-Claude
after the Nationals.
Marina Khalturina & Andrei Krukov - they're a pair from Kazakhstan that
finished 6th in the 1997 Champions Series final, barely missing a trip
to the finals in Munich, Germany. Barry Mittan will probably provide a
lot of assistance in creating their web site up.
Starting off with eight figure skaters is a healthy number (enough to
keep me extremely busy!), but membership may grow because the skaters
network themselves and are always inviting new members to join. Skaters
have creative control over their own web sites, so I hope to see a
variety of designs and content from them in the near future.
Skate World's volunteer staff includes myself as webmaster, Jason
Marshall at Spots InterConnect, Inc. for technical support, and Karyn
Wood for creative details. The web site has its own brand new web
server. This is good, but there are a couple of details that still
need to be worked out for people who use lynx as their web browser.
Thanks! I hope you can visit and then return from time to time and
see the new updates. There'll be many updates in the next few months.
If you visit now and ask the skaters questions by signing their guest
books, they'll be included in the first Questions & Answers sessions
with them. Otherwise I usually just ask them the same set of questions.

Looks pretty good to my Lynx...what problems do you see?
Hi Louis,
Hey, you're right. The Spots technical whiz must have fixed it.
Thanks for pointing that out. Before lynx couldn't access any .shtml
files. It only asked the user whether to download or cancel it. I'm
glad to see it's fully working now.
Sam.
