Here is how to do it (with an example of a person I'll call Mary):
1. AGE, SEX, LOCATION
Use two-digit state or province codes, or three-digit country codes.
Mary is 48, female, and lives in Delaware.
48F-DE
2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A SKATING FAN?
Example: Mary has been a skating fan since 1988 or thereabouts.
48F-DE 88
3. YOUR SKATING ACTIVITIES
Do you skate? If not, you can skip this part of the code.
Prefixes: "sk" indicates that you skate, immediately followed by the
number of years you have been skating. Follow this by a slash (for
readability).
What level do you compete at or what is your highest test level? Indicate
the discipline (Fg/Fr/Syn/Pa/Dn), then level (Pp/Pr/Ju/In/Nv/Jr/Sr/Ad).
If you just do it for fun or haven't tested, don't include a level. Use a
number to indicate a figure test level.
Example: Mary has been skating for 9 years. She skates in a synchronized
team at the adult level, and has passed her 8th figure test.
sk9/SynAd/Fg8
4. FOR SKATING PARENTS
Do you have kids who skate? If not, you can skip this part of the code.
If so, here you can list how many skating kids you have, their sex,
discipline and level.
Prefixes: "skp" indicates you are a skating parent, immediately followed
by the number of skating children in your family. Follow this by a slash
(for readability).
List each child separately, separated by a slash, with gender first (m/f),
then discipline (Fg/Fr/Syn), then level (Pp/Pr/Ju/In/Nv/Jr/Sr/Ad).
If you are the parent of a team that skates together, indicate them as
follows: mf followed by their discipline (Pa/Dn) and then level (as
above).
Example: Mary has three kids who skate: a girl who has tested Novice
freestyle, and a son and daughter who skate together in dance at the
juvenile level.
skp3/fFrNv/mfDnJu
4a. DO YOU JUDGE?
Follow the same pattern above, except use "j" instead of "skp" in the
prefix.
5. FACILITIES VISITED (optional item)
Do you train at, or often visit any elite facilities? List them with the
following abbrevations, or devise your own abbreviation by omitting vowels
for sites not listed. Separate items by a comma. This is an optional item
and does not need to be included in your code.
Prefixes: t (I train there) or p (parent of a skater who trains there)
UDel U. of Delaware
Brdmr Broadmoor
Sims Simsbury
Marl Marlboro
Mrpsa Mariposa
RGlen Royal Glenora
DSC Detroit Skating Club
LkArro Lake Arrowhead
Example: Both Mary and her kids train at the U of Delaware and she
occasionally visits Simsbury.
tpUDel,Sims
7. FAVORITES and PET PEEVES
Favorites: skaters, things about skating you support. Put abbreviations
in [brackets], separated by asterisks.
Pet peeves: Things you hate, things you're death on the subject of, things
you wish would go away (skating-related only - not newsgroup-related!!!)
Put abbreviations inside exclamation points, separated by asterisks.
Any skater or team must be abbreviated with first initial and 3 letters of
last name. Examples: MKwa (Michelle Kwan), MAni/GPei (Anissina and
Peizerat), etc.
Suffixes: B (Borg), F (fans), C (commentary), O (opinions)
OBO (self-explanatory)
Cinq (Ottavio Cinquanta)
ISU (self-explanatory)
IMG (self-explanatory)
USFSA (self-explanatory)
CFSA (self-explanatory)
Open (the Open Series)
BBoiF (Brian Boitano's fans-any and all-as distinguished from Borg)
BBoiB (Brian Boitano Borg)
MKwaB (Michelle Kwan Borg)
(for example purposes only. The suffixes "F" and "B" can be added to
anyone's name)
DButC (Dick Button's commentary)
CBreO (Christine Brennan's opinions)
RSumC (Roz Sumner's commentary)
$ (money in the sport)
Example: Mary is a fan of Michelle Kwan, of figures, of synchronized
skating, and likes Dick Button's commentating. She is annoyed by the
Boitano Borg, thinks Ottavio Cinquanta should be impeached, wishes the
Open series would go away, and hates the influx of money into the sport.

COMPLETED GEEK CODE
Here is Mary's complete Skatefan Geek Code:
48F-DE 88 sk9/SynAd/Fg8 skp3/fFrNv/mfDnJu tpUDel,Sims [Mkwa*Fg*Syn*DButC]
!BBoiB*Cinq*Open*$!
Your code probably won't be as long. Can anyone think of other items for
the Geek Code?

Ellen, how long has it been since you've had a nice, long rest?

OK, let's see if I can translate this correctly, as you appear to be using
some abbreviations I didn't include or think of...
You're 52, female, living in Colorado, started being a fan of skating in
1960, have skated for 12 years, skate figures (and then I can't quite
figure out PreABz - preliminary adult something?), you skate freestyle
(and then I can't decode the tests passed), adult precision,
and Dance (Bz?). You know a lot more about testing and levels than I do
so maybe you could suggest better abbreviations for them.
You have a daughter who skates precision at the Senior level, and you are
a figures (Bz) test judge, a free skating (Bz) test judge, a pairs (Bz)
test judge, and something to do with dance as well.
kewl!
You forgot ISIA levels.
Designations for MITF tests.
Foreign skating tests.
you left out recreational skaters.
and a final suggestion, use dashes between field within a catagory of
information, use a slash only at the end of a catagory, use a 0 for a
place holder in a catagory where there is no information.
and last but not least
NOT ALL FIGURE SKATING IS DONE ON ICE!!!
So in place of the usfsa designation for level, you may also include
[ISIA-(greek letter or test number)]
so someone in ISIA level Gamma would be [ISIA-G] AND Freestyle 3 would
be [ISIA-FS3].
-------
for MITF, append MTIF and the level after your test designation.
-------
For foreign skating, you can include ISU-(discipline)-# for the level
designation. So ISU-FS-5 would be international test level 5.
-------
now, roller skating requires a *whole* different set of designations.
USAC or NARSA for the governing body, or a country designation for
another country. test level are similiar, but must be noted *= old style
or != new style, g=gold, s=silver,b=bronze, followed by a number
indicating which test.
and finally, here's mine:
28F-TN/76/skR USAC, RSROA-FSb3* Fb2* D-Ab1*Ib1*/skI-Rec/ skp1-f-Rec/ISTU
SrC/ CBreO-ASkaB-SBezC-PCarI
can you read it?
