Stiller has always been hit or miss with me; I have the sinking feeling
that ice skating is gonna get raked over the coals. And with everything
that's been going on, that's not a good thing.

Of course, it could get people more interested in it again, but poke
good-natured fun, don't humiliate or adhere to stereotypes.

It will be fun to compare it to "On Edge" . Ever seen that one? It's
a mockumentary done in the same vain, although not as funny, as "Best
in Show", "Mighty Wind", etc. It has many elite skaters playing
judges.

I heard of that one; actually saw it at my nearby TLA store but didn't get
it. Scott and Brian Boitano are in it, right?

Okay, I finally got that link to open (it was really slow to load on my
pc) and this sounds NOTHING like "Inside Edge". I can't wait to see
it. I don't mind when Hollywood pokes fun at my fave sport. I think
it's pretty ridiculous myself.

I guess "On Edge" (which is more of a parody) is rentable now. Haven't
seen it yet. I'm waiting for "Ice Princess" to hit the theaters next
month. The worrisome part there is, it's supposed to be more of a
"realistic" comedy.

It will be interesting to see if this film will be a cheap shot.

The fact is that some of these really dumb movies have very good strong
underlying values.

Scott Hamilton plays a skating official. Kristi, Tai B., Peter C., and
Steven C. all play judges. Peter and Steven are quite lecherous.
Scott is probably the funniest person in the whole movie. He doesn't
look at all like himself. It took me a minute to figure out why this
person looked so familiar!

There are, however, some errors that skaters and fans will pick up on
in a hurry. For example, they show people doing doubles and proclaim
them as triples. One of the coaches wears rental skates while
coaching. Also, they talk about skaters doing impossible combinations,
like toe-loop/lutz. Some of the programs that they skate at
"regionals" are more like something you would see in the adult interp
category at Adult Nationals.

I enjoyed "On Edge" and thought it was funny. I don't think it's a
waste of $3.99 to rent it. It's been out at my local video rental
place for some time, and I guess I saw it in the late fall. I think
skaters and skating fans will probably enjoy it more than those who
know nothing about skating.

Two dudes? Pairs? Oh brother! One of the requirements
of a good movie is that it must have some kind of
redeeming feature. This is obviously going to be trite
homo, having absolutely no-one in the entire film who
most of us would be willing to identify with. I just saw
a movie .. "Shall We Dance" .. that is spot on. It is
exactly what I experienced when I was taking Ballroom
dancing lessons .. the desparate business .. the really
decent people involved in it ... and the fact that it just
makes you happy to do something like that. That is all.
That is enough. I skate 5 days a week. I spend a lot
of time with figure skaters of every level. We do it
because it makes us happy. No homos. No stupid
conversations about clothes and hats. It feels good to
skate, and getting better, feels even better. That is all.
That is enough. I really like my skates. Sometimes I
just hold them up and look at them to feel the joy
that they have given me over the years.

Every time I watch "Strictly Ballroom" (which is often) I think,
"Someone should make a fun and colorful movie like this about figure
skating." "Shall We Dance?" is an even better movie. (I'm talking about
the original Japanese version. I haven't seen the Hollywood version.)

I have seen the Hollywood version, and quite enjoyed it. Plus most of it
was shot in my old home town of Winnipeg, so it was fun to see a lot of the
background shots and recognize them. They also used some of the dancers
from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as extras. However, they must have imported
some top ballroom dancers for some of the scenes, as they looked to be
pretty darned good.

Richard Gere and J. Lo do a really hot tango in the film, and while I knew
she could dance, was pleasantly surprised by Gere. (yeah, I know he danced
in Chicago, but I haven't watched that one all the way through yet.)
