Virtually all online radio and TV comes through a colocation
center somewhere. Most stream hosting providers have their
servers in colocation centers. However one article

No matter WHERE you get your skating coverage
from, be it from us, Ice Network, or ANYWHERE
ELSE, you better enjoy it while you can, because
if Protect IP goes through, the ENTIRE internet
radio and TV industry is FINISHED.
Online broadcasting is a low margin industry, and
most online radio and TV networks just DO NOT HAVE
the money to run their own T1 or T3 lines to stream from,
which is many of them will have to do. There is no way
that many streaming providers, or online TV/radio networks
could pay the kind of money these lines cost, and still
stay in business.
If Protect IP passes, it WILL be the END of figure
skating coverage online. It does not MATTER where
your get your coverage from, the days of figure skating,
either on online TV, or online radio, may soon come
to and END. And if you are tennis fan, it also means
the end of online coverage of many tennis events as
well.
Whether you get your online sports coverage
from us, or somewhere else, Protect IP is about
to put an end to our industry.
This could also hurt skating in the long run, as the
only way most people have to get skating is online.
American TV has not carried much skating in the past
few years. You don't get much on Canadian TV as well.
A lot of other sports will be hurt by the lack of online
coverage. Tennis, gymnastics, and swimming, especially will
affected by this.
In the 16 years I have been doing online broadcasting,
and doing pirate shortwave many years before that, its been
one HELL of a run.
Like I said many times before, I started out as a lad with
my own pirate shortwave station. The first Olympics
I covered was the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, and
I can well remember yelling it LOUD AND PROUD
into the mic "Scott Hamilton becomes America's first
MENS Olympic figure skating champion in 32 YEARS,
since Dick Button in 1952.
And there is the summer Olympics that year when
I yelled "VIVA LA REVOLUCION CUBANA!!!!"
when Mari-Lu Reton won the womens all around
gymnastics title. People tuned in on their shortwave
radios would have heard my saying that on the radio.
In the many years I have covered skating, and
sports, in general, the most DISGRACEFUL
displays of misbehaviour in skating history was at
the North American championships in 1993,
when Tonya pulled that "Phony Dress Opening"
stunt.
The other outraegeous behaviour in skating
history was at 2002 North Americans, when
Sasha Cohen starting playing "Chicken On
Ice" with Michelle Kwan during the warmup
for the final group. Needless to say, I was
quite shocked at that one.
In 1998, I was practically yeling into the mic
at the top of my lungs "Tara Lapinski becomes
America's FIRST ladies Olympic figure skating
champion in 22 YEARS".
I have seen two Australian born skaters get
in trouble with the law. Tonya Harding in 1994
for having Nancy whacked, and Nicole Bobeck
in 2009 for being in a meth ring. America should
have stripped the both of them of their US citizenship
and deported them to Australia, or at the very least,
give them a prison sentence, then make arragments
for them to serve their time in an Australian prison.
It will also be the end of internet simulcasting for many
AM and FM radio stations, except the NBCs, Clear Channels
and Infinitis of the world, who can pay the exorbitant
costs for a T1 or T3 line, plus bandwidth charges.
The one silver lining of this would be the end of
dial-up internet. Most dial-up providers, since
the late 1990s, have been using colocation centers,
for their servers. Those on dial-up better start thinking
in broadband, becuase of Protect IP goes through, it
will be the END of dial-up internet service, once all
the colocation centers are put out of business by the
Protect IP act. At least those few internet radio outlets
that ARE able to survive won't have to hear the
hue and cry of dial-up users who holler that broadband
is too expensive, once dial-up internet is made extinct
by colocation centers going out of business. That will the
ONLY *GOOD* thing about Protect IP. All the cheapskates
using dial-up will have to start using broadband.

There are all kinds of internet business that could
be affected by this. If the hosting industry ends up
being ka-put becuase of Protect IP, I figure that
both Figure Skating Universe and GoldenSkate
would be put out of business. There is no way
that FSU could pay for its own T1 or T3 line
and stay in business, even if they raised the
price for Season Pass out of sight. With the
amount of users they get on the site at times,
the bandwidth charges would be prohibitive,
if they had to run their own ultra high speed
pipe, such as a T1 or T3.
A lot of online retailers would be out of
business, except for Amazons of the
world.

It is not just us, it is the ENTIRE online broadcasting
industry that could be affected by this.
If you work ANYWHERES in high tech, be afraid,
be VERY afraid. Protect IP could be a threat to your
job and your livelihood.

Protect IP could really be the END of a LOT of Internet businesses.
If the predictions come true and the hosting industry is destroyed,
that will make it impossible for a lot of internet based businesses to
run.
Online radio is a low margin business. What I make in profits
after other expenses makes me a middle class person. I am
sorry, but there is NO WAY we could install our own T1,
T3, or other ultra high speed pipe and stay in business. A lot
of other internet based industries will be in the same boat.
When Protect IP passes, expect to see unemployment at levels
not seen since the Great Depression. That is how BAD it is
going to get.
