SOFIA, Bulgaria - Russia finished 1-2 in the pairs final
while Monica Pisotta of Barrie, Ont., and Michael Stewart
of Mississauga, Ont., were the top Canadians in eighth
place at the world junior figure skating championships on
Wednesday.
Lubov Iliuschechkina and Nodari Maisuradze won the gold
medal with 92.81 points, edging Ksenia Krasilnikova and
Konstantin Bezmaternikh in second at 91.82. Huibo Dong
and Yiming Wu of China were third at 90.17.
Pisotta and Stewart were followed by Amanda Velenosi of
Laval, Que., and Mark Fernandez of Brossard, Que., in
ninth.
Pisotta and Stewart dropped a spot from their short
program on Tuesday while Velenosi and Fernandez moved up
one ranking.
"The long program was OK, but we made a few mistakes,"
said Stewart. "We were looking to build upon what we felt
was our best ever short program."
Velenosi and Fernandez executed a clean program but would
have liked more polish.
"It went pretty well, we only had some slight mistakes
and we're happy to have moved up," said Fernandez. "Our
lifts were our strong point and we executed the jump and
throws we wanted. It was one of better programs but
technically we made some mistakes."
In men's competition after the short program, American
Adam Rippon leads with 69.35 points, Artem Borodulin of
Russia is second at 66.16 and Brandon Mroz of the U.S.,
third at 63.36.
Jeremy Ten of Vancouver is 11th, Kevin Reynolds of
Coquitlam, B.C., is 13th and Elladj Balde of Pierrefonds,
Que., is 22nd.
Competition continues Thursday with the men's free skate
and original dance in ice dancing.
