I'm forwarding my friend's short report on Johnny Weir's April 1st performance
at the annual Ice Club of Lancaster (PA) show. For those may not know much
about him, Weir is coached by Priscilla Hill at the University of Delaware FSC
and finished 5th in Junior men at 2000 U.S. Nationals in Cleveland. He turns
16 in July and, remarkably, has only been skating since the age of 12.

<< Johnny Weir was the guest skater at my local club's show last weekend, and I
caught the Saturday afternoon show. I first tried to figure out where I had
seen him skate before--it must have been Novice Nationals in Philadelphia--1998
[where he finished 3rd]. He has grown quite a bit (a point I mentioned to my
son who is very tall for 10 and having trouble with his single axel). Weir's
first program was to Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World" and his second to
Ricky Martin's "She's all I need" (I think that is the title--the slow one on
the radio all the time). No triple axels--a curtain cut off a good quarter of
the ice--but a great double axel, 3lutz, 3salchow, 3toe, 3loop I think. My son
thought his pancake sit spin was "cool." Johnny didn't smile through the
programs and looked very business-like, but skated smoothly and with wonderful
extensions and posture which is very nice to see in a guy, and had no trouble
with his triples, even on very choppy ice at the end of the show. This skater
isn't just a jumping bean! >>

Nice to see that review of his exhibition performance. Johnny will also be
skating in our club's annual show this weekend in Massachusetts. The rumor
is his exhibitions are great and that if he can just get through a competive
long program (he had serious LP troubles at both Eastern's and Nationals)
he's one to watch for the future. He has had quite a rise in just four
years, but what would you expect from a kid who taught himself to do an axel
after just three learn to skate lessons!

FYI
The Wallace Figure Skating Club of Fitchburg, Ma. will be featuring guest
skaters
Tiffany Scott & Philip Dulebohn (US silver medallists, 9th at Worlds)
Jennifer Kirk (2000 Jr. Ladies World Champion)
Johnny Weir (Eastern's gold medallists, winner of Jr. Men's SP at Nationals)
Amy Bobrick (US Nationals silver medallist)
David Pelletier (US )

plus over 25 group, solo & precision performances by our own skaters at our
27th annual benifit ice show this Saturday (4/8/00). Three shows (10, 2 &
7:30). Tickets are just $6 ($3 kids & seniors) and proceeds go to child
abuse prevention programs in the area.

He does have very good exhibitions, the best part being his spins and his jumps
( actually does difficult jumps).

and learned a double Salchow a month after learning a single

Johnny told me he might be doing a show in a few weeks that will also
feature Lucinda Ruh. I hope she has fully recovered from her back injury or
Johnny's pancake spin position will put her to shame <g>.
