There seems to be a new pro event next week, entitled "America's Choice:
The Great Skate Debate," CBS, 8 eastern, Thursday, May 9.

TV Guide says:

"The audience picks the winners in 'America's Choice: The Great Skate
Debate,' a competition taped May 7 in Green Bay. Entrants are expected
to include Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Katarina Witt and Nancy
Kerrigan."

An accompanying advertisement list skaters as Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie,
Viktor Petrenko, Brian Orser, Kurt Browning, Katarina Witt, Nancy Kerrigan,
Yuka Sato, Rosalyn Sumners, Elizabeth Manley, "and more!"

Does anyone know anything about this?

The CBS web page (http://www.cbs.com) says:

"THE AMERICA'S CHOICE FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS (working title) is a
CBS Sports figure skating special, a competition judged for the first
time ever by the attending audience -- using computer handsets for
scoring. The champion skaters scheduled to appear include Scott
Hamilton, Paul Wylie, Kurt Browning, Viktor Petrenko, Nancy Kerrigan,
Katarina Witt, Yuka Sato, Caryn Kadavy and Rosalynn Sumners performing
individual routines at the Memorial Arena in Green Bay,
Wisc. (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT)."

No offense, Wisconsin folks, but maybe they should call it the
"Cheesehead's Choice Popularity Contest" instead. :-) It *does* sound
pretty cheesy, anyway!

Sounds like another Ultimate 4 competition. I'm sure it will be very stupid. I guess its the replacement of Skates X II.

Not only is this a cheesy special. The concept of people voting on an
athletic endeavor is preposterous. How can one be sure that the audience
isn't packed with fans of a particular skater that the promoter wants to
present? The whole idea that they are going to eliminate the top 10% and
bottom 10% indicates that the promoters think that the viewer will accept
this as a legit competition, when in fact, it has no more credibility than
the R&R Skating championships with celebrity judges. This is a stupid
concept and CBS should be told about how real skating fans feel even
before it airs. e-mail CBS Sports at spo...@cbs.com. If they approach it
as a "fun" event, a popularity contest, nothing more, the announcers
should so state. Now that figure skating has become a lucrative cash cow
for the networks and the promoters, they think that they can pass off a
stupid idea as a "competition" and the viewer will accept it.

I love watching skating on lTV, but CBS is really starting to piss me
off... what the hell kind of competition will this be?! Sounds like
another "Ultimate Farce" to me. Maybe I should just lay off and not
take it so seriously and just see how the whole thing goes down before I
critisize.

next! Now that he's in the ocean, d'ya think he might show up in Europe
or Japan? It's kinda like the Taster's Choice commercials...the ads have
taken on a life of their own and become bigger than the products they're
pushing.
