I finally gave up waiting for the FAQ to show up here and visited the
site where it is posted. Some interesting reading, but it did suggest
one question to me:

I keep hearing that Irina Rodnina is coaching. I still have fairly
vivid memories of how she and Zaitsev dominated pairs skating, so her
activities interest me. But so far I haven't seen her standing on the
sideline while a skater of hers skated. Is it just that her skaters
aren't that competitive? Or does she coach very young skaters? They
say she's in the US which should give a US fan the maximum opportunity
to see her. I'm sure there's someone here who knows the where and
who.

Rodnina is coaching Tiffany & Johnnie Stiegler and was with them at US
Nationals. Maybe you didn't recognize her at the boards because she's
dyed her hair orange! And she coached Kovarikova & Novotny to their
world championship in 1995 and was working with Meno & Sand last
season. She's based at the same rink in Lake Arrowhead where Frank
Carroll coaches. She does also work with some less prominent pair
teams and I've seen her coaching singles skaters as well at past
competitions.

Rodnina is currently based at Ice Castle in Lake Arrowhead, CA. She is
coaching Tiffany and Johnnie Stiegler (as of last season) and a few other
younger pairs. She has previously worked with Meno & Sand and Nicole Bobek.

During Nationals, she was coaching a few of the pairs. The Stieglers were one
of them, but I can't remember the others.

Wow, so she's the one behind the Stieglers. Funny they didnt mention
that when those guys were making such an impression. Also, now I'll
have to go back and look at that part of the tape.

The other team that Irina had at Nationals was the brother and sister team of
Sima and Amir Ganaba, who are Novice.

Apropos seeing her with her students at Nationals, I was amused to see that
Tiffany Stiegler in her skates is noticeably taller than Rodnina. She must be
one of the all-time peanuts.

Or perhaps I wasn't seeing this properly. Does anybody know?

To give credit where credit is due, they started out with Peter Oppegaard.
It is he who taught them their basics, AND helped them develop the
presentation and panache you see now. They were already a force to be
reckoned with before they switched to Rodnina.

And to answer the question that will probably come next: No, I don't know
why they switched, but I believe this is their second season with Rodnina.

Irina Rodnina currently coaches the young Stieglers.
I saw her at the Nationals practice session. Was really happy to be the
first one to recognize who she was.
- Sophia
p.s. i think she was also coaching some other team at nationals but don't
know their names....

Peggy Fleming made an interesting observation during the SP televised on ESPN
(2?). She said that working with Rodnina had taught the Stieglers how to make
crossovers and simple stroking an "important" expressive statement. And sure
enough, just as she said this they were stroking forward with such verve and
lean that it was really exciting.

The Stieglers learned their stroking, jumping, throws, lifts, positions,
extensions, spins and presentation under Peter Oppegard over a period of many
years. He also choreographed their programs, and selected & cut the music,

The new issue of Russian Life magazine produced in Moscow, has a blurb about a
new rink under construction in Moscow that will be named for Irina Rodnina and
she will return to Moscow to coach. Has anyone else seen something about this?

Yes, I have recently read an article from some Russian newspaper that talked
about this. I didn' t quite understand though whether Irina was going to
return to Moscow for good, or whether she was planning to remain in the USA.
The article was vague about this.

Irene.
