At the movies today I saw a trailer for the upcoming Disney flick "Ice
Princess" and it made me uneasy with what may be to come. The plot, as near
as I could infer it from the brief scenes shown, apparently goes something
like this . . .

Overachieving, bright, math-whiz, cute-as-a-button high school girl works at
local ice rink. Wanting to fit in with the HS "in" crowd and be less of a
nerd, she takes up ice skating (can't tell from the trailer whether she ever
skated before or not). Owing to her math skills, she figures out how to do
triple jumps and goes on to be, at some level not made clear, a star.

Michelle K. and Scott H. appear as either commentators or judges (the
former, I think) and, best of all, Kim Cattrall is the skater's coach.

I hope this turns out to be a decent skating movie but the trailer suggests
that a huge suspension of belief will be required by all real skaters &
skating fans (which is not to say that it may not be a guilty pleasure, a la
"Ice Castles").

I wonder if the time is ever going to come when some
body grabs Disney up by the scruff and tells them that
"The Lion King" was sexist pap. And NO it is not cool
when a girl takes up hockey because only spoiled rich
kids figure skate. Math skills only teach math skills, and
have nothing to do with skating, or life either. Today,
while I was working in the Engineering lab, I overheard
a grad student say, "I'm going to retire after I graduate.
I've worked enough." Disney has told an entire generation
of kids that certain Males are Kings and the rest of
them are buffoons. And females should marry Kings
and have little Kings. All smart people are athletes,
and people who are not athletes are stupid. I'll bet it
took Disney months to find enough ugly people to
act stupid in that movie. I also bet they don't know that
Michelle Kwan is not very good at math :-)

and to make it worse the actress playing the skating-by-numbers wiz is 17-18
years old. Yes, that is believable. who writes this stuff?

Do you really believe that math doesn't play and important role in
peoples lives or are you being sarcastic?
How do you know Michelle isn't good at math?

Well, I can isolate Eigenvalues 'til a cow gives beer,
and I consider it a nice hobby.

She doesn't wear thick glasses, and not once has she
called me at home late Saturday night to see if I would
come in and see what is wrong with her computer.

> "math class is hard". What message does this send to young girls?

.. that they should plan on marrying Lion Kings. I just
hope this movie lasts long enough so that in 40 years,
THAT generation will think that THIS generation was
not WILD like they are .. out drinking beer and wrecking
cars because they are all so pretty and talented. Oh man!
I actually sat and watched a special on TV the other
night about teenage sex. It was WORSE than the sex
movie I had to watch in Basic Training .. and sure
enough, my generation was represented by Annette
Funicello. I'm really ready to kick Disneys twat. They
totally ignore the perfectly adequate sex education that
I received at Reds Beach Music, and in the back seat
of my Dads DeSoto. We were pretty and talented ..
and good at math too .. went to the Moon.

Found this version of the plot at Yahoo! Movies...

Brainy Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg) has never quite fit in.
Caught between her fantasy of becoming a championship figure skater and
her strong-willed mother (Joan Cusack), who has her on the fast track
to Harvard, she can only hope to be like Nikki, Tiffany and Gen (Hayden
Panettiere) - three elite skating prodigies who are ruthlessly
competing on the US Figure Skating circuit (and have attitudes to
match). But when Casey gets the chance to train with Gen and her coach,
a disgraced former skating champion who also happens to be Gen's mother
(Kim Cattrall), she must dash her own mother's hopes in order to pursue
her dream. Now, with only the support of Gen's teenage brother, a hunky
Zamboni driver (Trevor Blumas), Casey takes on the challenge of her
life when she finds herself competing against the best to make it into
the championship circuit and become a real "ice princess."

Visited the site (thanks) and watched the trailer. But what astonished
me was the poster for ICE PRINCESS. Ever hear of a 1984 exploitation
flick called ANGEL? Visit the Internet Movie Database at www.imdb.com
and you'll see what I mean.

"From small town Mathlete ... To big time Athlete."

"High School Honor Student by Day ... Hollywood Hooker by Night."

(And no, I never got around to seeing ANGEL, an obviously fine film,
but that poster did stick in my mind - not to mention my craw.)

That they should start striving to be nationally rated figure skaters
when they're almost ready to graduate high school?

Maybe she's so good at math she doesn't need you to know what's wrong with
her computer. Of course, if you know as much about computers as you do about
figure skating, than you wouldn't be able to help anyone smarter than Hattie
with a computer.

Obviously, Ruth needs to go back to school to learn English. She said: " if

you know as much about computers as you do about

figure skating, than you wouldn't be able to"... Ruth has the nerve to call
Johns and Hattie dumb, but she herself has is the one who is dumb, as she
proved with the quote above.

Har! As if you should be the final arbiter on proper use of English.
I bet Ruth hasn't responded to you because you are in her killfile, and
I'm so sure she's not the only one who has done so.

As long as you keep coming back, so will I. And tell your lesbian
lover Chana I'm out for her as well.

I saw the trailer last night when I was watching TV and I thought it
looked cute. Let's be realistic - this is a MOVIE. Movies do not
always have to portray life exactly. I think it looks fun.

Movies don't have to portray life exactly, but they should have some
tenuous connection to reality if the audience is going to take anything
seriously. I saw the trailer on-line and thought the plot would be stupid
to anyone who knows the least little thing about skating.

Lets play a game....who will be the first "new up and coming skater" to use the new
disney movie's music for their short or long program next year?......

I predict Kimmie Meisner or Cohen, though she isn't new...oh, and this skater also
has to be great comp. for MK>

At least the costuming seems better....should there be any reproductions, they're
less likely to look like communion/yoddeling dresses....

Maybe the ladies are the favourite in the U.S., but up until this year,
certainly not in Canada.

My friend actually went to a sneek preview for this on Monday and she
said it was really cute. She compared it to the Princess Diaries -
good to take younger children to. I'm planning on taking my cousin
this weekend.

Ebert gave it 3 stars and said it was more entertaining than he expected.
