Don't know about this number but I do remember Kurt saying in an
interview that he sent Gene Kelly a tape of his TV special, You Must
Remember This, which has Kurt's version of Singing in the Rain in it. He
said he hoped that Gene Kelly had watched it but had not heard from him.
But you never know, Torvill and Dean say in their book Facing the Music
that they got a telegram from Kelly after the 94 Olympics congratulating
them on their performance.

I would like to think Gene Kelly saw Kurt's terrific tribute and enjoyed
every minute of it. It seems he did enjoy watching figure skating as he
did indeed send Torvill & Dean a telegram after the '94 Olympics. They
reprinted it in their tour program:

"I tried to telephone you the night of the skating competition. It
seemed the whole world was calling Norway that night and morning. I just
wanted to say how thrilled I was with your performance in the Olympics.
It was ice dancing at its finest. I just wish I could have been a judge.
"

My best wishes,
Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly was my very favorite...I like to think he's now dancing with
the angels....<G>

On the news last night, when they mentioned that Gene Kelly had died, they
showed a clip from singing in the rain. I then went back and played Kurt's
version of it and I was amazed at how similar they were. He really did
an excellent job of imitating Gene Kelly.

I couldn't have said it better myself. We've lost a great one. I loved
Kurt's routines (Singin' in the Rain and the new one). Does anyone know if
maybe he skated the new one in St. Louis last night as a tribute?

Besides saying "I agree", I'll go a bit further. A friend pointed this out
to me. Whether it's Bogie, Gene Kelly, or Mick Jagger, you can always see
Kurt in it. Yes, he does a great job of imitating these characters, and yet
at the same time, he's still Kurt Browning. He still manages to be himself
in all these characters. He's amazing.

It is no news that Gene Kelly died several days ago. One of my skating
archive tapes includes a sequence of Gene Kelly's "Signin' in the Rain"
followed by Kurt Browning's. I hope that Gene Kelly had the opportunity
to see Kurt's version; both are so fantastically well done, even to the
same sorta dark lighting. In Kurt's, they even went so far as to paint
the street, curb and sidewalk into the ice. Kurt Browning's "Singin' in
the Rain" ranks as my favorite non-competition skating program. I can't
even imagine doing those jumps and spins, soaking wet, while holding an
umbrella.

I often wonder how many "takes" it took to film the entire
Browning "singin In The Rain" program. The behind the
scenes infor would be great. Also, it would be great to see
the out-takes. His performance was the best I've seen in
many years. I want to learn more and see more about it.

I believe they are referring to the program, "Mr Entertainment" which is
Kurt's tribute to all the dancing men, but especially Gene Kelly.

I'd like to put side-by-side tapes of each and play them together
someday. I think it'd be interesting to watch both a the same time.
Both are great!
