Standings
Pair's Short:
1/ Abitbol&Bernadis
- short interview in Le Parisien, Abitbol just recently recovered
from a severe bout of the flu

- Bushkov, slight hand down on 3TL
3/ Sargeant & Wirtz
- very strong showing, I was impressed

4/ Ina/Zimmerman
- Zimmerman fell out of the 3T, landed on his picking foot, pity
as he did a *really* nice one in the warm up
5/ Totmianina& Marinin
- very strong pair, but Marinin caught an edge/lost his edge (don't
know ....) going into the SBS spin and did *not* do it at all.
- lasso lift, one hand exit
- split twist was light, almost lateral
6/ Saurette & Fecteau CAN
7/ Bestandignova & Bestandig SVK
- I think only landed a single throw axel.
Ladies Short:
1/ Nicole Bobek
- clean programme, *flutz* .....
- 3Z2T, 3T
2/ Elena Liashenko
- clean programme, 3Z2T, 3F
- well done
3/ Maria Butyrskaia
- fell on the 3Lutz, did not complete combination, good 3L
- otherwise an excellent programme, I liked it better than Bobek's

7/ Andrea Diewald
- 3T2T, my notes says "uggo landing"

not sure of the order of final 2, but I *think*
8/ Tara Ferguson
- 3Z hop turn, 2T
- 3S, single axel
9/ Mojac Kopac
- bailed completely on combo
- 2A, 2T
Men's Short:
1/ Michal Weiss
- 3A, 3F3T, 3Z

tacked on double toe with extra turn on the ice
- and then.... 2Z -oopsie
- 2A
3/ Dmitry Dmitrenko
- 3A2T, 3Z, 2A
- lotsa footwork, but exit from spins were rather unsightly
4/ Laurent Tobel
- some family member must have been sitting in the seat across the
aisle from me, as the family resemblance was *striking*
- 3A, 3F3T, 3Z
- woops on the camel spin, did not do
- a lot of 2 foot skating
5/ Emmanuel Sandhu
- *clean* programme, he should be proud no matter what the
standing, I would have ranked him above Tobel, toss up with Dmitrenko

testing positive at the European Championships. Poor guy. Will
translate and send if there is interest
8/ Andrejs Vlaschenko
- 1A3T - he had not landed any 3A in yesterday's practice, or during
warm up today.

- good spins and footwork
- 2A, 3T2T, 3F fall

- 3A fal
- popped his combo into 1Z1T, 3T
Original Dance:
1/ Anissina and Peizerat
- wooops - fell on a lift. big hush in audience, but it wasn't too
disruptive and they recovered quickly. Some sequins must have fallen
off Marina's dress, she was picking a couple up at the end.
- otherwise, a *strong* programme, complex footwork and
choreography, a cut above the rest
2/ Fusar-Poli & Margaglio
3/ Drobiazko & Vanagas
4/ Chait & Sahknovski
5/ Delobel & Schoefeld
6/ Dubreul & Lauzon
7/ Sauri & Chaupis
8/ Hugentoblers
9/ Koegel & Fediukov
- Koegel might have lost her footing, not too sure, don't know too
much about dance :)
okay. It was an interesting day overall. Group in front of me was in
heavy discussion about this year's poor publicity and the fact that
only the Gala will be shown on TF1. It appears that this is the first
time? - everything used to be covered on TF1. They were blaming the
low attendance on that. Also surprised when someone mentioned that
Lalique would not be shown in the US. There were *no* TV cameras
running, so not even Eurosport is carrying this. there was a video
camera manned on and off, but not too sure what it was doing if
anything.
Attendance was probably about 200? Couldn't really tell and wasn't
counting. Nothing was open in Bercy, no concession stands, no
programmes, no souveniers. Which is odd considering that they were
selling souveniers during the practice sessions the previous days.

Okay, question from the ignorant: I know that A=axel, T=toe, F=flip, but
what is Z?
Lutz? I noticed in the beginning of the post you used L presumeably for
lutz so I'm kinda confused.
Thank you kindly,
Julie L.
Yes

Wow, how depressing. So much for a "major" event. Kinda takes the "grand"
out of grand prix, eh?

Why is Weiss doing a flip for his combination? What is the strategy here?
Is the triple lutz eventually going to become a quad lutz? (Or is that
against the new rules - that is to say, is it against the rules to have a
quad lutz and a solo triple axel in the same program?)

Has Yagudin been trying to take the "classic" short program route all
season? (e.g., 3ax-3toe, 3lz, 2ax)

I'd guess that Weiss's strategy is to do his program just the way he
did it here. I think he's betting that the judges will weigh a short
program with four triples higher than one with only three and a double
axel, especially since his triple axel/triple toe combination has
never really been very reliable or of high quality when he has pulled
it off, at least before now. The one he did in the long at Skate
America was the best I've ever seen him do, but in practices it was
evident that he's still fighting against his wonky triple axel
entrance.
And no, a program with a quad lutz out of footwork, a triple axel, and
a triple flip/triple toe combination would not be against the rules.

It's what he did at Skate America. I think I heard some talk that he may
try a quad in the short later in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised to
see him stick with the "classic" approach. This program is so packed with
stuff other than jumps that he gets lots of points for it without having
to risk a quad.

Oh gee, that makes sense now - thanks Dave!

How did the triples and the throw go?

I just do not know what to say.

Wouldn't it have been something of Hubert was in second place right now? And
if Anna Rechnio were in third, then I'd be thinking that the apocolypse was
upon us.

That's good to hear. I thought he had potential, but he is pretty slow and it
amazes me how he can jump that well with such little speed.

It's good to see Thierry back. I thought of him as an interesting skater
when I first saw him back in 1995. Then he sort of disappeared afterwards,
and I seriously thought that we would never see him again after the drug
scandal.

He must be the Irina Slutskaya of men's skating. Vlaschenko, like Slutskaya,
rarely does well in the fall events yet always manages to turn in a good
performance at worlds.

Yes, you can do a solo triple axel and a quad. One is a
jump out of footwork, the other the triple or double axel.
However, I haven't seen anybody with that particular
jump line-up so far. Plyushchenko, Abt and Stojko were
all doing triple axel-triple toe or triple loop and
solo double axel (plus quad toe as the jump out of
footwork).
As for question two, so far Yagudin has been
doing a "regulation" short program with 3 ax-3 toe,
3 lutz and 2 axel. He did this at Nations Cup as well,
despite Abt doing 3 ax-3 loop and 4 toe from footwork.

I was also behind them, and I'm pretty sure that if Eurosport
doesn't show anyeventof the International Skating Union's Grand Prix
series it's because they didn't
manage to negociate rights with ISU, so they just prefered to let it go.
For TF1,
it's just as usual, they NEVER showed a complete figure skating event, I'm
sure
that even the gala won't be shown in full...
Anyway, today cameras will be turned on, because TF1 will show a few
parts of
the competition.

Even the doors were nearly all closed... What a shame for Bercy... I
think there
was more than 200, perhaps 800, but anyway that's very low... I know they
began
to advertive in Paris just a month ago, and with very very few
noticeboards... That
really shows that figure skating isn't so popular in France. I heard that
TF1 is
considering to stop the diffusion of figure skating after this season, so
things are
going very bad...

It sounds like they were mistaken anyway - someone mentioned to me
that only Worlds and Europeans are shown on Eurosport.
> Anyway, today cameras will be turned on, because TF1 will show a few

I was just surprised that things were's taped for posterity.....Oh
well. Some coaches had video cameras, some in the audience even. As I
mentioned in another post, TFI will broadcast today's event at 23h00.
Don't know for how long. I can't imagine skating at 11PM - no high
priority event for sure :P
>was more than 200, perhaps 800, but anyway that's very low... I know they
harhar - talk about bad crowd estimation from me!! I can *never*
guestimate beyond 50 methinks. Yes, no matter what, it was pathetic;
considering that lots of pp in the stands were also part of the
competing contingent too! yeeeeeeesh!
I think they would go far in lowering prices. They're exhorbitant!
There is no option of an all-event pass either. From what I hear, an
all-event pass to Sparkassen is only DM110. And if the group ahead of
me were right , this was the first year that practice is open to the
public, they made it sound like they fought for it, though my french
is wonky so may have misunderstood.
Who knows.

They *used to* show Lalique every year. Even last year it was announced
and advertised, but obviously the deal fell through at the last minute and
they didn't show it (boy, was I pissed off :). This year they might not
even have tried to get it again.

well, there isn't any standardized abbreviation, but I always use Z =
lutz, since there are two jumps that begin with "L", and z is a very
distinctive letter. This leaves me with L = loop. I used to use P =
loop, but somehow people never made the easy connection that they do with
Z = lutz.

My system has always been a number/two-letter system:
3ax = triple axel
3lz = triple lutz
2sa = double salchow
1lp = single loop
3fl = triple flip
4to = quad toe loop
3tw = triple toe walley
1wa = single walley
I don't know why anyone would want to use a one-letter system when a
two-letter system is only a bit longer and far more clear!
I had to develop this for my Jump Server which needed to take uniform
codes in the data files. There were all sorts of permutations like...
fax = one-foot axel
hlp = half loop
tux = tuck axel
Now that the Jump Server is not getting any new entries (I am using a
different sort of database on my site now that doesn't require codes), I
don't use them any more for that, but I still catch myself typing them
automatically sometimes...
I think your french is good, you heard well. I hope that now they will
always open
practices to the public in France, but nothing is less sure...
Guess the French are still trying to get out of bankruptcy? Seriously, this is
one dysfunctional skating federation, so it's not surprising they aren't
exactly "marketing experts" although not getting any TV rights sold and used
seems pretty amazing!
