Kwan Splits With Longtime Coach

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Michelle Kwan, the reigning world and
national figure skating champion, split with longtime coach Frank
Carroll on Tuesday and plans to direct her own career.

Kwan and Carroll had been together since 1992. During that time, Kwan
won four world championships, five U.S. titles and the 1998 Olympic
silver medal.

"Frank and I have always had the same goal, to be the best skater I
can be," Kwan said. "Over the past few months, I have come to realize
that although we share that common goal, we have different views on
the direction needed to get there."

Kwan will go it alone this weekend at the Skate America competition in
Colorado Springs, Colo.

I'm sorry, but I have to say that Michelle has totally fucked up!!!!

Has there ever been and olympic chamption without a coach? - - - NO!

I have no idea why she is upset, but does it matter???????

Obiously to her it does - but to the rest of the world who pays her
salary - no!!!!

OK - so she can afford to do what she wants, but is she thinking
globaly???? Probably not and should she - depends on where she is
with her career.

Since the Pros are defunct, since we need to promote the "Michelle's"
of this world - I totally hate this sceario!

I would rather see Michelle be left off the Olympic team completely and
happy than see her be an Olympic champion who is found hanging off a rafter
or ceiling fan or with a bottle of pills in her tummy because she was so
miserable. It's a shame that the gold medal matters more to some of
Michelle's (so-called) fans that her own well being does.

Of course, Michelle Kwans feelings don't matter. All that matters is that she
fulfill YOUR dreams for her. How dare she even consider anything else.

She owes the rest of us NOTHING. I know I've paid to see Michelle skate
and in exchange she's performed for me. There is no running tab going
forward.

Thinking globally? Are you serious?

Agreed. That it is. Whether it makes sense to all the rest of us or not.

Agreed again. Besides, if this turned out to be a good decision for her,
"the rest of the world who pays her salary" would be very quick to pat her
on the back. That's not the point. She doesn't owe it to her fans to do
only what they think she should do. And I say that even though I don't get
why she did this. I may disagree with her, but I know better than to think
I am somehow the boss of her.

Huh? Barb, since when are the pros "defunct"? Are you just saying that
your season was messed up when the Landover competition folded, and so all
you have to look forward to is the Olympics, so if Michelle doesn't do
exactly what you want her to do, you feel personally screwed?

The pros aren't "defunct" to me. I saw a whole bunch of them just the
other weekend. Had fun, too.

Exactly. I suppose in some very, very loose sense I pay part of the
salaries of all my favorite athletes and entertainers, but there's no
long-term obligation involved. They can quit competing/performing any time
they want, and I can quit watching. None of us owes each other anything.
Michelle has long been my favorite skater, and I'd be seriously bummed if
she quit before the Olympics, but what she chooses to do with her life is
her business and hers alone. I hope she skates, but what I want much more
is for her to be happy and at peace with herself, whatever that takes.

I just found this thread.

Thanks for the laughs. I almost did the ROFLOL thing again (in-joke for a
select two). Good thing it wasn't, because I'm too tired to get up off the
floor today.

Obskating: I read somewhere that Ben Ferrerrrererrrererrerr, er, F. (Canadian
guy)'s allergies have been bad and it's his medication that's making his heart
race faster than normal, making him so gassed at the end of his programs. I
feel for him. He looked soooo tired at times.

But, don't kid yourself. Kwan will not be happy wihout winning come Feb
or March, whenever.
She probably split with her coach because of his pressure of wanting her
to win, or because she is just wanting all the accolades from it for
herself. Either way it is selfish. It is really ridiculous that people
so much covet a piece of medal, a title. They have made it to be much
more than it is to themselves. It's ignorant, and people need to get a
grip.

Well, Jason Somebody, there could be any number of reasons for Michelle's split
with Frank. But Michelle said she wanted to put it all out on the line, on her
own.
Perhaps she feels that should she fail, she will take all the blame and Frank
will be blameless and knows that should she win the whole shebang, Frank will
be acknowledged as the one who got her there. Now, how selfish is that?

Having had a bronchodialator prescribed one time, I sympathize. I think I
took two of them and the racing heart was worse than the cough.

OBSkating, lot's of skaters have asthma.

Then why is it selfish to split from her coach if he's pressuring her to win?

Well, I'm not a fan of winning at all costs, but I doubt that Kwan is,
either...the reality is that medals are there to be coveted. Otherwise, why
even bother having medals? The skaters could just all go home pleased with the
fact that they had done their best (or displeased if they had not), and not
even bother worrying about how they had done relative to the field.

Note: Jason has been here before. He appears to believe anyone who wants to
win something is "selfish". He seems to have a special animus toward Kwan --
possibly because she has won so often. At least this particular post didn't
get into religion ...... as many of his past posts have.
