That is still the official date, but be assured there will be 3 US entries in
each Skate America discipline.

The key phrase from the USFSA website is

"A further list of confirmed participants, including the U.S. Roster, will be
announced as it is available."

That is reassuring. Thanks, Morry.
Does anyone know what is taking so long for the skaters and/or the
Association to make up their minds? (Considering that other nations'
skaters/GBs are much further away from the registrar?)

Thanks, and
Cheers.

Actually all the invitations are out and most skaters have accepted. The date
of August 15 is set in the Grand Prix announcement. While some Federations have
jumped the gun most are awaiting the official date in case some want to change
skaters. That is in fact happening.

Have you looked into a used computer? There are some good bargains and some
even come with warranties.

I don't purchase used computers .... thanks, though. The plan
is for a Dell, perhaps by the end of the year, but it was put off
due to medical bills following my husband's two heart attacks.

Gateways are cheap - around the $400 range - and iMacs are not far behind at
around $1000. But you are missing alot by not trying used products. I don't
know about computers, but for cars and clothes, they can be great. Lexus has a
great "certified preowned" program, and depending on where you live,
consignment stores can be great. I live in a pretty wealthy area, and you
would not believe what you can find at consignment stores.

Why are you doomed on 01 Jan 2000? The biggest problem with the
year 2000 is that too many people are buying into all the hype.
At home, I have a ten year old AT running 3.22 DOS that handles
the year 2000 with no problem on both the commercial software
and all of my own C and BASIC stuff. In fact, I have yet to see
any system or program anywhere fail upon feeding it the year 2000
and there is a simple stopgap solution for those that might if
the system will buy a date prior to 1980, eg. 1972. Even my two
Mitsubishi VCRs, my camcorder and my GPS don't puke on the year
2000.

Granted, my old machine doesn't run Windows but I don't need it
to do so. I have a new Dell Pentium III machine coming soon but
I expect that some of the DOS stuff I use regularly, especially
TSRs, won't on run on the new system simply because Willy Gates'
MS doesn't want to bother to support such.

No, you are not. You're doomed because a lot of us aren't going to hand feed
you info from the Web just because you don't have an updated ISP that will
handle DOS-based browsers. You don't even need a new computer. Your ISP
sucks. Your whining and excuses are way beyond tedious.

If your DOS and TSR applications run under 16-bit, they will run under Win
95/98. The old 16-bit standard was retained in those O/S just for people like
you. Pick on Billy if you must...but choose something he really does. Heaven
knows there is enough material to work with.

This has been discussed before. She won't get a computer until she can
get the top of the line type. So, until then she will be in DOS land
and sometimes complain about that<g>.

Bill Gates. Founder of Microsoft. Oy. You ARE in the backwoods. Why bother
buying a state-of-the-art Dell if you don't even know this much?

> And, bugger off.

No. You bugger off with your whining. While you tell US that you're too good
to accept a used computer or anything less expensive (albeit just as
functional) as a Dell, the rest of us are not only using used or old
computers, we are paying for adequate ISP access. And you have the temerity
to infringe on the investments WE'VE made. What nerve! Even worse, you don't
even recognize what a pill you're being with your demands and your cavalier
behavior. Damn. We'd all love new Dells...but most of us, including some of
us in the computer business, don't have one. We do with what we have.

> I don't have any other ISP

Obviously. Nor will you take anyone's advice about substitutes. Louis
Epstein, who detests anything remotely connected to Windows or Microsoft (in
particular), has Web access, and has told you how to access the web. You blew
him off with yet more excuses. You have nothing but excuses about ISP's, as
well as your Window-less environment. Still, you keep begging us to do your
work for you while you have nothing but complaints, whines and excuses. You
are the ONLY one who does this. Give it up, already. It appears nobody has
any sympathy left for you.

> and windows 95 won't run on my 4 RAM -= we once tried to load Windows 3
> and I could not even access AOL or CompyServe for Windows.

Then turn off some of the other applications when you try to access the web,
or use Netscape 3.x. I ran Windows 3.1 on 4 mb RAM on a 386 for years. It
works. In fact, I support a parochial school that has a classroom full of
donated 386's running Windows 3.1 with 4 mb of RAM...and they are connected to
the Internet. You're full of it.

Furthermore, what part of DOS-based browsers don't you understand? They
exist. They just don't exist on the type of Compuserve you are using. Spend
your internet budget on an ISP that does the full job...or leave us alone,
already. It doesn't cost as much as you're paying for CompuServe for a local
BBS account that has Web connections...using DOS software. There are so many
alternatives available to you...that you won't investigate because it is
easier for you to whine here about what you don't have and won't accept
because "you're too good".

One year of your begging was acceptable. Two years became annoying. Three
years of this is far beyond the pale, and you are making your problem *our*
problem. Do *something* for yourself, for pete's sake. What a selfish,
self-centered person you are.

You're worse than selfish. You're self-centered, self-interested, and can't
even begin to think that others have nothing yet still make do. You ask no
reasonable questions when you ask people to repost what they find on the
internet just for you. I still have no sympathy for you and your computer
situation. What happened to your husband has absolutely nothing to do with
this.

Of course you did. Marlene pretends to have more knowledge than she does, and
is too lazy to do any readily available research. Marlene is looking for a

It was probably loaded and operational. She just didn't have an icon on the
desktop, so she thought it didn't work. More like going to toast the bread
but forgetting the toaster is in a cabinet. She didn't take the toaster out
of the cabinet because she didn't look for it.

Listen Kaiju -- there were plans for my husband (whose name is Bill,
and I thought you were insulting him), I am well aware of who Bill Gates is ...
I am happen to work for one of the leading newspapers in the world) to
buy me a new Dell. All picked out .. but last April 9th, en route to work,.
as I was driving, my husband suffered a heart attack, and was totally out,
and was basically dead, by the time I got him to the hospital. He suffered
a second heart attack in the ER. I nearly lost my husband, Kaiju --
-- well, in case you didnt know this, but intensive care cost a lot of money
even with health insurance. Not long after finally paying off my major
surgery in spring , we have more hospital bills. So, there goes my
computer for perhaps 6 more months ... well, it actually doesn't matter
because DOSCIM is not Y2K compatible -- which means after 1-1-00, I lose
my service, and will be without it.
There are priorities in life, Kaiju .... All I asked was for the name of
Irina's husband since a. I had never heard of Skatefans and b. it was not
an unreasonable question. So you can take your computer and shove it where
the sun doesn't shine. I would rather be in DOSLAND and have my husband
alive and not a have a new computer and not have a husband,

I would not ask Louis Epstein for the time of day, actually.

I hope you never, ever have to go through the pain and turmoil that
I went through last April or the continued flashbacks that I suffer
because of that heart attack, and having my husband hooked up to
11 machines to keep him alive.

Kaiju: go to hell
I am far from being selfish.

Marlene, from something you said in another message, I thought that you
HAD lost your husband. I'm glad to hear that this was not the case.

As for the computer question ..... since you know that this is a hot
button for many, no matter why it is that you don't have web access, my
suggestion is .... just don't ask or mention it here for a while. As a
librarian (I think ... is that right?) you know that if you really NEED
web access, you can go to your local public library for it. Even if your
local public library is benighted enough to have filters, most of the
sites being cited here aren't going to be filtered (though the Ellen's
abuse site might be -- another piece of madness from the censors)

I DON'T WANT ANY ONE TO HELL BUT PLEASE DO NOT MAKE US GO THROUGH THIS
AGAIN. I HAVE A WHOLE OFFICE FULL OF COMPUTERS THAT I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT
KIND THEY ARE. JUST CALL UP AOL GIVE THEM THE 21 DOLLARS AND AWAY YOU GO
I'M SURE ITS WORTH THAT MUCH TO JUST SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Kaiju -- you have no idea what are you talking about.
A. I am well aware of how a computer works. I was doing online
research -- I have a master's degree in library science -- before you
were learning how to brush your teeth.
B. I know more about what my computer can and can't do. You've never
used my computer. I tried once or twice to load every versions
of AOL and CompuServe ... I gave up because neither program would
work -- click on an icon, and it took TWENTY MINUTES TO OPEN.
I doubt you would put up with that. AOL told me that their
basic version required 8 RAM - I have 4.
I have also looked into other DOS systems -- tested one in the area.
Dissatisfied. I called others, asking for a test - and the ones that
don't allow a test, I am not interested.

This all got started because I asked a simple question: I wanted to
know who Irina S. married because I could not click on the link -
and asked if someone could psot the information -- and you
as usual got bitchy because I asked for information.

Marlene A Koenig

I don;t ask for sympathy ... I was asking for information.
Talk about self- centered .. you are one of the most
arrogant bitches on this newsgroup .... I am not asking for
pity -- all I wanted to know was a name .....
actually, yes, my husband's situation does have something to
do with this ... if he had not been ill, I would have a new
computer by now....

Marlene A Koenig

unread,

Yes, Karen, I did ... I do have two college degress, including one
in library science ... neither would work -- unless you call waiting
20 minutes for an icon to open up ... a few years ago, AOL told me I had
to have at least 8 RAM, which I didn't, and that is why it would not work.

Marlene A Koenig

Kaiju, you are the most obnoxious person on the face of the earth -
I know exactly what an icon is .... and the mouse that I used to click
the icon with ... but it would take 20 minutes to open - and once opened -
everything else - took about the same amount of time ... so I got rid of
it and went back to the old system, which will be closed down on 1-1.
I use a superduper Dell at work and use AOL as well as other applications,
so stop the insulting.
I asked a simple question here at home - and you as usual got on your
high horse and decided to berate me ... if that makes you feel good,
great -- I could care less.

Don't you live near me? (I live in Reston, VA.) I think I remember your story
from last spring. I have an old Mac Performa 575 that I am not using, it is
only running 7.1 with 8mb RAM, but you can get online OK with it (though you
would have to get a modem.) Anyway, you are welcome to borrow it until you get
your new computer. It isn't doing anything at my house and if something
happened to it, it really wouldn't matter. Let me know.

This all got started because I asked a simple question: I wanted to
know who Irina S. married because I could not click on the link -
and asked if someone could psot the information -- and you
as usual got bitchy because I asked for information.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I'm almost afraid to ask, but I too would like to know who she married.BY THE
WAY, i AM NOT REALLY COMPUTER LITERATE, BUT MORE SO THAN i WAS BEFORE OTHER
POSTERS TAUGHT ME HOW TO DO WHAT LITTLE i KNOW.
Sorry I hit cap locks and don't have time to retype. Have to go to work.

Well, so far the only information that seems to be generally available
is that his first name is Sergei. The article did not give a last name.

Yes, she is. But next Marlene will be turning up her nose saying she won't
accept even a free used computer, and besides it is a Mac. What do you do
with someone like that?

Marlene, please. Maven told you exactly what the rest of us saw in the
translation of tha Russian article. The article only gives the name Sergei,
and that Irina met him in school, as Maven told you.

Either Sergei and Irina chose not to give his last name, or the Russian
publication which printed the information chose not to give, or simply did not
know his last name.
