Stupid question for Morry or whoever: is Sarah not too young to
compete in an ISU-sanctioned senior international event this season?
Unless there is another rule that I am overlooking somewhere, the
exception allowing medallists from the World Junior championships to
participate in senior events applies only to ISU Senior Championships
(Worlds, Europeans, Four Continents). Has the USFSA petitioned for an
exception on her behalf, or has it been determined that the age rules
do not apply to international open competitions?
-Sandra
Under standing ISU Rules Sarah is grand(mothered) into Senior ISU event this
season.
Can you cite the specific rule?
The language formerly in rule 108 (it was deleted in the most recent
congress) that grandfathered Tara Lipinski, etc, when the age limits
were raised was specific to those who had competed in international
senior events prior to 1996.

Does anybody else think this age rule is ridiculous? If they can do the stuff,
why can't they skate it and qualify.. Why should they not be permitted to skate
a qualifying event if their subsequent placement would not permit them to skate
that event. Allowing someone younger who has placed at Jr Nationals but not
another person of the same age, doesn't seem fair to me. I'm beginning to think
that the ISU is going to rule themselves right into obscurity.
Something else that bothers me is this pro am bit. It hardly seems fair to the
pros to let elligible skaters come into their events and win all their prize
money but the Pros can't go skate in the elligible competitions. I know that
some of my favorite skaters favor the present situation where they can skate the
pro competitions and still be elligible, but it just doesn't seem right. Many
wonderful Pro skaters are being forced to quit competing, because they can't
compete with the young elliglble skaters. Remember there is BIG money for the
winners of these events.
While I have the floor, I have one other comment:
Will someone PLEASE tell Michelle that she should ditch the pastel blue outfits?
Her dark coloring totally over powers pastels and her face simply disappears.
She should wear the vibrant jewel tones and skip the pastels. When she wears the
jewel tones, her skin is vibrant, her eyes bright, and she looks alive, but when
she wears the pastels, you hardly see her face.

When has she worn pastel blue except during Lyra Angelica at 98 Nationals,
Worlds and Goodwill Games?

I don't think so. I think the camera doesn't compensate well for her skin tone
on ice, but it works for her a little better than it worked for Surya. Somehow
I think if more skaters had darker skin tones, they'd learn how to photograph
her better.

Funny, I can see it just fine. Right there on the front of her head. ;^)

Those two numbers are the only ones I've seen her wear pastels, fortunately.

It's really not a matter of knowing how to photograph darker skin tones, but for
those with darker skin tones to know which colors to wear so that they photograph
well, or just show up well from a distance. Dark skin toned people and those with
dark hair and eyes should not wear pastels. Neither should they wear Neons, like
the pink, orange, and greens that are so popular. Up close, they make the skin
tones look dull and sallow, and at a distance, they just don't show up.

<g> In general, I agree with April. The Lyra Angelica and Ariane costumes
were lovely in themselves, but they're the wrong colors for Michelle. She
looks her best in black, white, red, burgundy, etc. Pastels and olive skin
don't mix, IMO--I have light olive skin myself and feel like I look pasty
and/or jaundiced in them.
(Actually, there are a lot of skaters I'd like to send copies of Color Me
Beautiful to--Michelle is by no means the greatest sinner in the unflattering
color department. Maria's LP costume was gorgeous, but I don't think she
looks good in white. Nicole's costumes occasionally overpower her coloring,
though never her personality. :-)

I'm the same. Brown hair, brown eyes, olive skin. I avoid pastels at all
costs. I look washed-out in them.

I agree about Ariane, but not Lyra Angelica; that shade of blue is a basic
color that doesn't clash with anyone's coloring (unless they're a redhead,
maybe). I thought she looked great in it and the costume "worked." I
even liked the bit of illusion fabric oddly pasted on the back.
But the pale lavender of the Ariane costume, I agree, just doesn't work
with Michelle's coloring. Frankly, I think that color is difficult for
anyone to wear well. And Michelle does look best in bold colors.
I certainly don't know the specific rule (Steven??), however I would
suspect the grandpersoning application..."once in worlds, always eligible
for worlds, if qualified by competition"...is applied to not only worlds,
but to all senior comps, because of worlds participation.
Cheers.

I agree about the Ariane costume. The red number she had on last night
was great! That color really works for her.

But if there's "grandpersoning" language in the ISU rules now, I can't
find it. What was formerly there to "grandperson" the skaters in 1996
was removed at last year's Congress.
Rule 108 says:
2. Figure Skating/Ice Dancing
a) In ISU Senior Championships and the Olympic Winter Games only
skaters may compete who have reached at least the age of fifteen (15)
July 1st preceding thise Events;
b) In International Senior Competitions only skaters may compete who
have reached the age for [sic] fourteen (14) by July 1st preceding the
competition;
And, in the section headed "ISU Championships -- Special Rules", there's
this bit from Rule 378:
3. Competitors under fifteen (15) years of age as of July 1st
preceding the Championships, may not participate in an ISU Senior
Championship, unless they have been among the first three placed
competitors in the World Junior Championships held in the immediately
preceding calendar year.
ISU Senior Championships are elsewhere defined as the World
Championships, Europeans, and Four Continents.
Anyway, I don't see how Sarah Hughes qualifies to compete at a senior
international open event unless the ISU has either formally granted an
exception for her, or they have decided that senior international open
events are not "International Senior Competitions" and the age rules
do not apply. In which case I wonder why Naomi Nari Nam isn't being
allowed to compete, too.

When does Sarah turn 14?

I think that coaches and costume designers should all be SURE to learn color
analysis before they design costumes for someone.

I have the same thought about the Ariane costume. I'm fairer than Michelle, yet
I can't wear lavender. Lavender/perriwinkle always make my complexion look
darker. I love the color. I've tried all kind of shades of that color, but I
never bought one because it just doesn't look good on me. Asian complexion also
doesn't work that well with pink (icy pink is okay). Light sky blue, a la Lyra
Angelica costume, isn't as bad. Yellow usually picks up the yellowish tone of
our skin too. I look good in lime green but I won't recommend it to Michelle
since her skin has darker olive tone than mine does. To make pastels work for
olive skin tone, there has to be some neutral colors - white & black - in the
mix.
I'm not that crazy about Jef Billings' designs for Michelle because the colors
he picked were not that great for Michelle and the designs were generic. I love
Michelle's costumes in her second Disney special. Champagne, ruby red, dark
velvet are great colors for Michelle. I wouldn't say all jewel tones look good
on Michelle. Emerald green is definitely out and even royal blue isn't as great
(Dante's Prayer). But Michelle definitely should try bright orange/Chinese red
sometime. It should look stunning on her.
Jas
> Exactly! Red (blue red's, not orangy reds) are very good.
I disagree. I think she looks better in warm red (orange/red) than blue red. I
do. You can't really just turn a color wheel and expect people's complexions
work as same as the color wheel.
> Her dark blue
>of Dante's Prayer is gorgeous too. It's not just Michelle, but a lot of the
>other skaters too.
I disagree again. The royal blue is okay, not great on Michelle. It's the same
for me. The best color is the color that lights up our faces. Royal blue simply
doesn't do that for Asian skin tone, especially not Michelle's olive skin tone.
I cringe when I see Yuka Sato in yellow, lime green, and
>also she wears a pastel blue that hits her around her knees. With her sort

Yuka has a fairer complexion than Michelle's. I think she looks good in pastels
except yellow. And pastels suit her skating style. I think she looks lovely in
that light blue costume. Asians with fairer complexion CAN wear lime green.
Lime green and emerald green actually light up my face. As for the skirt
length, I agree with you.
>I think that coaches and costume designers should all be SURE to learn color

Some do. But not a lot of people know about Asian skin tones well. That's the
problem. Fashion magazines really need to use more Asian models.
