(Before anyone invokes the FAQ on me, let me point out that this is Alexei
talking and not second/third/whateverhand rumour).
I saw two different news stories that said that at a press conference,
Alexei, not in response to any questions, said that Tatiana Tarasova had
told him there were rumours going around about him and a Russian lawyer
that he was friends with. He said he was not gay, and that if he wanted a
man to be his friend, he would be his friend, and that people should stop
discussing his private life. Both stories reported that this declaration
was met with stunned silence.
In the "up close and personal" piece during CTV's coverage of the men's
long, Alexei said that there had been rumours going around since he "chose
to live with" Rudy Galindo. He said that Rudy knew a lot about life in
America and was helping him with the language and with American life. (I
wasn't clear if "live with" meant "share a
house with" or "room with on tour".) He said again that he was not gay and
last year he heard he was an alcoholic and now he was gay. He joked that
next he would hear he was taking drugs.
More details, anyone? Does anyone know what provoked this spate of
comments? I must admit I hadn't even heard a whisper of anything to
suggest that anyone thought Alexei was gay.
Cheers, Fiona
I appreciate your desire to communicate to "Alexei" that you are not gay.
Please note that this fellow RSSIFer has always assumed that you were a
flaming heterosexual (or, at least, a hot one.)
-Dave-
Dave, you are just plain twisted.
I love it.

Before you think, think.
Yup, he actually said this at the press conference. I guess he's frustrated.
Anyway, if this were alt.showbiz.gossip or alt.gossip.celebrities, I'd say
"I think he doth protesteth too much." But since it isn't...I guess I could
agree with him :-)

The rumor started during the 98 tour, according to Yags in the Russian magazine
Sport, when he spent time in Galindo's hotel room. Maybe they were tour
roomies? I haven't a clue.

Well, duh. My apologies. I was writing this in a rush and put in the wrong
Alexei. It is of course Alexei Yagudin.
Now (hanging head and blushing), does anyone have anything to add about
these rumours that suddenly seem to be so troublesome?
Cheers, Fiona
Haven't heard a thing, I really doubt it. On any day of the week, some male skater's supposed
to be gay. Who cares?

To send email replace "antispam" with "sprint"
I think it all started when Alexei stated, "I am not gay, but my boyfriend is."
Just guessing here, but perhaps Alexei Y. was reacting to some rumours
that had been circulating on a couple of the Delphi boards devoted to
Russian men's skaters. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that in one of
the fluff pieces on Elvis Stojko, he (Elvis) left the impression that one of
the reasons he decided to train elsewhere (outside of Canada) was that stuff
that was happening at the rink (presumably Barrie) was ending up being
reported on the Internet. I got the distinct impression from both skaters
that they felt their privacy had been invaded.

Scott McNeely of Sun Systems says, "You don't have any privacy. Get
over it." But seriously.......the concept of privacy, among those for
whom the Net is a compulsion is rather tenuous. People seem to feel
that they are somehow entitled to expose whatever they want, discuss
any subject that comes to mind. Rather like in small towns in which
no other amusement exists.

Well, the soap opera fans. Seems they're numerous.
Ask Ron Ng; maybe he "Noz".
