DAVID (Trinity Academicals)
v
GOLIATH (International XV)
Trinity Academicals RFC,
Bangholm, Craighall Gardens,
Sunday, April 10th 1994, 3pm.
An international XV with more caps between them than Imelda Marcos
has shoes, will play Trinity Academicals RFC to mark the centenary of
Trinity Academy School. Watch the local boys be pummelled and crushed
underfoot by a team containing Gavin and Scott Hastings, Sean Lineen,
Kenny Milne, David Sole and the like. Or will history repeat itself?
All proceeds go to St. Columbas Hospice. Admission by programme.
Adults two pounds. Children one pound.

(Andy Nichol and Derek Turnball had to call-off due to work commitments.
Roger Baird and Peter Wright due to injuries.)
Somewhere between 1300 and 1600 spectators crammed around the Trinity Acs
pitch to watch a superb game, on what was a very successful day for all
concerned. After the miserable weather on Saturday (Melrose 7s) we were
blessed with a superb sunny and warm afternoon.
The game was fast and furious, starting off with a score to Trinity after
about 5 secs! Tuna collected the Trinity kick-off in full flight, Andrew Kerr
side-stepped him to avoid doing any tackling (a stand-offs perogative) and
Tuna popped to his supporting team mate who crashed over. 7-0.
Undaunted by their mighty opposition Trinity scored again with a well worked
try after another couple of minutes. 12-0. The crowd were asking if this
was a planned start it was so unbelievable, the Presidents XV suddenly
realised they had a game on their hands.
Stepping up a gear the Presidents XV soon were on the score sheet with a few
superb tries, with at least 3 on the day starting from handling moves behind
their own goal-line. But Trinity stayed in the hunt playing some great rugby
based around clean fast ruck possession. After 60 mins Trinity took the lead
again going ahead 35-30. This seemed to force the Presidents team to show
what they were capable off and they ran in 4 unanswered tries to put the
result beyond doubt.
All the points were scored from tries (about half converted) apart from a
wonderful drop-goal from Kenny Milne in the dieing seconds!
A very successful day with St Columbus Hospice benefiting to the tune of a
good few thousand pounds, the local rugby community witnessing one hell
of a game, and all the local kids getting to meet the 'stars' in the flesh.
This just illustrates how friendly and truly amature the Scottish rugby
scene is, in which other country could a small local club attract so many
capped players to play in a friendly and reward them with nothing other than
a few free beers?
Cheers
