John Dorahy has been sacked as
coach of all-conquering Wigan.
The Australian coach had been at
the centre of mounting speculation
amid rumours of unrest at Wigan.
Dorahy replaced John Monie at the
end of last season and helped Wigan
retain the league title and the
Silk Cut Challenge Cup.
He is now understood to be locked
in legal talks with the club over
the terms of his departure. Wigan
insist he was on a one-year deal
while Dorahy maintains he had
agreed a three-year contract.
Cheers.
Neil.

It's a true measure of their past success that a coach that led them to
their fifth successive double of Cup and Championship could be sacked. Any
bets on who takes over? I doubt the rumours of Hanley doing it have any
foundation, I reckon he'll play for another year.

I have heard that he was sacked for mis-conduct.
I remember when he was the coach at Halifax in season 1989/90, he was sacked
from there for running up a 2,000 GBP phone bill, calling his family back home
in Australia.
As for the new Wigan coach, Ellery Hanley as been mentioned, along with ex. Hull
coach Brian Smith, but I think giant kiwi Graeme West will get the job.

The sacking has got much more to do with Dorahy's relationship with the
players than the results on the pitch. I heard a rumour that the players
took over before the cup semi final and the team was coached by Bell
and Edwards at least for that game (which was the best they'd played
all season up to that point).
Radio 5 'live' have just said that 2 players had threatened
to leave if Dorahy stayed. Edwards' decision to re-sign last week
probably isn't entirely coincidental.
I don't think Hanley will get the job. If Wigan were to give the job to
a recent player Dean Bell would be the one, but going from player
to coach at the same club has big problems, although Joyner's done all
right at Castleford.
I would expect Brian Smith to be top of the list, maybe
Wayne Bennett (who gets approached every time) or Steve Simms as
an outsider.

Hasn't West been named interim Coach for the Premiership? I think he would do a
good job and as you say he deserves the job after serving his apprenticeship.
Maybe Wigan will just find a coach until Dean Bell returns in 1996 after his
Auckland Warriors commitments. That's if he is still expected to coach when he
retires.

Dean Bell has the job until he leaves for Auckland, after that, who knows?
The rumours I heard in Wigan (weeks ago) were that Norweb insisted that
Dorahy had to go and that they would buy out his contract.
There are also reports that Dorahy and Jack Robinson almost came to blows on the
team bus while parading the Challenge Cup around Wigan. Also, the club
were not too happy at his "To all the doubter - Suck!" comments on Sky TV, after
the last game against Oldham. Apparently, he held a sign up saying the same
thing, to the crowd at Central Park last Sunday in the post-final celebrations.
As well as Hanley, Smith and West, romours are going around that Dean Bell
is not going to Auckland, since his hernia (I think?) is far worse than
thought. Although he managed to play out the season here, he is not expected
to be able to stand up to the battering he will get in the Sydney competition.
As a thought, Wigan sacked Colin Clarke and Alan McInnes after they had coached
Wigan to Challenge Cup glory in 1985 against Hull. They were replaced by
Graham Lowe. Could history be repeating itself with Wigan set to dominate
for another decade?
Andrew.
Just read on teletext, Wigan are keeping West as the Coach for the time
being, they didn't say whether it was with a view to making it a permenant
job.

Apparently, the board had made up their mind's after the Halifax game that he
should go, but kept this quiet until the major trophy's had been retained, so as
not to put the campaign in jeopardy.

I am led to believe, after speaking to an insider from a rugby league newspaper
that they have already signed Brian Smith, I think from Sydney St. George, but
only time will tell. Knowing Wigan, they will wait until their season is
completely over before naming a new boss, for the same reason as above.
I also think that Saint's may have their best chance of beating Wigan for a good
while on Sunday in the premiership, as I have heard that many Wigan players are
really looking forward to the season ending as quickly as possible. West will
probably not allow this, however, as he bids for the job permanently.

Matt.
I did hear a rumour that Brian Smith, who has coached St George for a few
years now, has been approached. He is probably ready for a move since
coaches tend to move on every 3 or 4 years (if they last that long). Under
Smith St. George have reached the grand final in the last two years and
were beaten by Brisbane on both occasions.
I does surprise me that Wigan keep using Australian/NZ coaches. Lowe,
Monie, Dorahy - who was before Graham Lowe?
On the subject of Dorahy's sacking, I get the impression that it was
because of friction within the club rather than the team's on field
performance. Anybody have any details (or rumours) about this?
