I see John Bradbrook made the Barberians XV. Is SA a recepticle for
unwanted NZ halfbacks or what. Bradbrook is another good halfback the
Wellington RFU let go. If there's one thing Wellington is good at it's
getting rid of quality players.

EXPECT NO THRILLS FROM US - MARKGRAAFF
DURBAN June 24 Sapa
Springbok rugby coach Andre Markgraaff is prepared to sacrifice
flair in order to establish a successful game plan which will carry
the national team through a demanding season.
The Boks - in the guise of a South African XV - take on the SA
Barbarians in a warm-up match here Tuesday night intended to
fine-tune a few key areas before next week's Test against Fiji in
Pretoria.
And Markgraaff warned the large crowd which is expected at
King's Park: "It won't be festival stuff from us. We are going
there on a mission and will be playing to a Springbok pattern.
"We will leave the exhibition rugby to the opposition."
Although the game will be hard-fought between opponents who
know each other's play inside out, the lack of Test match intensity
allows for experiment.
Bok debutant Johan Ackermann teams up with Natal's Steve
Atherton - back in the international fold after a two-year absence
- to form a new engine room partnership, and it's likely that
Markgraaff will ask captain Francois Pienaar to vary the lineout
options as much as possible.
Despite being pitted against such wily campaigners as Braam Els
and Test discard Hannes Strydom, Ackermann and Atherton should
profit from the accurate service of John Allan.
The decision to try James Small at fullback could be of
long-term significance, regardless of lack of specialist cover for
Andre Joubert in the squad. Small has proved he can do the job at
provincial level and as he has five years' age advantage over his
Natal team-mate he will be in the frame to succeed him when he
hangs up his boots.
For incumbent Test flyhalf Joel Stransky, Tuesday night's match
is an 11th hour opportunity to edge ahead of Henry Honiball in the
race for the pivot's jersey against Fiji.
And Markgraaff will want to see how the centre pairing of Boks
Japie Mulder and Christiaan Scholtz shape up against the
strong-running of Jeremy Thomson and Danie van Schalkwyk. Both have
a sound understanding at Test level, although Hennie le Roux cannot
be ruled out of the equation at this stage.
Markgraaff has already singled out the Baa-Baas' half-back duo
of John Bradbrook and Boeta Wessels for special attention.
"They're both dangerous runners and could cause us trouble," he
noted.
New Zealander Bradbrook has emerged this season as the most
exciting scrumhalf in South African rugby behind Joost van der
Westhuizen. Although not yet eligible to play for the Springboks,
his inclusion in the opposition ranks has marked him out for future
consideration.
Keep an eye out too for some left wing trickery from Breyten
Paulsen. The Western Province utility back was virtually unknown
before playing a starring role in last month's national trial.
South African XV: James Small, Justin Swart, Japie Mulder,
Christiaan Scholtz, Pieter Hendriks, Joel Stransky, Joost van der
Westhuizen, Gary Teichmann, Andre Venter, Francois Pienaar (capt),
Johan Ackermann, Steve Atherton, Marius Hurter, John Allan, Os du
Randt. Reserves: Johan Roux, Hennie le Roux, Krynauw Otto, Schutte
Bekker, Naka Drotske, Balie Swart.
SA Barbarians: Russell Bennett (Border), Stefan Terreblanche
(Boland), Danie van Schalkwyk (N Transvaal), Jeremy Thomson
(Natal), Breyten Paulsen (WP), Boeta Wessels (Griquas), John
Bradbrook (Border), Johan Erasmus (Free State), Ian Macdonald
(Transvaal), Wayne Fyvie (capt, Natal), Braam Els (Free State),
Hannes Strydom (Transvaal), Adrian Garvey (Natal), Chris Rossouw
(Transvaal), Dawie Theron (Griquas). Reserves: Joggie Viljoen, Vlok
Cilliers (both WP), Andre Snyman (N Transvaal), Hottie Louw (WP),
Pierre Marais (Boland), AN Other.
Kick-off 7.30pm.

DURBAN June 24 Sapa
GELDENHUYS AXED FOR INDISCIPLINE
Adri Geldenhuys' 11th hour expulsion from the SA Barbarians'
team to face the Springboks in Durban Tuesday night has almost
certainly ended any prospect of him resurrecting his international
career.
Bok coach Andre Markgraaff hinted as much when he talked Monday
of his desire to rid South African rugby of foul play.
The fiery Eastern Province lock was called up by the Baa-Baas'
management Sunday to replace Transvaal's Hannes Strydom, who
withdrew through injury.
However, he was subsequently axed from the starting XV when
word reached Markgraaff that he had been involved in off-the-ball
incidents during Saturday's Currie Cup match against Transvaal at
Ellis Park.
It was alleged that the 31-year-old forward punched Vaal
counterpart Kobus Wiese in the dying moments of the game and
thereafter had a verbal altercation with referee Carl Spannenberg.
Transvaal secretary William Roos confirmed Monday that the
union had decided not to cite Geldenhuys, but Markgraaff was
clearly in no mood to accommodate a player whose disciplinary
record over the years has been suspect.
"Geldenhuys has been dropped for disciplinary reasons," he told
reporters at the Boks' Durban beachfront hotel. "After being
involved in a couple of other incidents during the past month he
should have known better.
"Under the circumstances, it was not right that he be allowed
to take part in Tuesday night's game.
"I gave him a chance to be involved on the international scene
again by inviting him to play in the national trial last month.
However, he seems to have failed to heed the message about on-field
discipline."
Markgraaff said he was determined to stamp out dirty play in
South African rugby. "The last thing I want to see is my players
conceding unforced penalties through poor discipline," he added.
An EP spokesman denied that Geldenhuys had been involved in an
incident with Saturday's match referee, but said he had clashed
with several Transvaal players during the course of the game.
Geldenhuys' replacement in the Baa-Baa's team is SA Under-21
trialist Hottie Louw (Western Province), with Natal's John Slade
filling the vacancy on the reserves' bench.
Two other changes in personnel have disrupted the Barbarians'
preparations. The call-up of hooker Naka Drotske to the Bok squad
in place of the injured Andries Truscott means a rare start for
Chris Rossouw, while Vaal's Gerhard Combrinck replaces the injured
Ian Macdonald at flank.
Griquas' Andre Bester is the Baa-Baas' new reserve hooker.
The Boks - under the guise of a South African XV - will wear
their changed strip of white jersey and green shorts for the game,
which looks set to attract a 30000 plus crowd.

Ha Ha :) - I like this! v.d. Merwe was a way of poking fun of fellow at fellow

the same time - Most generous.

Wow! You mean SA have a player who is *even dirtier* than Kobus
Wiese? Incredible!

I hope Derwyn never plays against him!

Almost certainly he did not "coin it". This joke has been out in one
guise or the other for many years. The originator of the joke will be
impossible to find. I know the van der Merwe joke has been out for at
least 20 years and certainly didn't originate in SA. Where did it come
from: probably America with their Polish jokes.

Well in fact it dosen't, as it implies the average IQ of NZ is
lower than SA. But that is beside the point, I was under the
impression that this witicism was first uttered by Robert
Muldoon, former Prime Minister of NZ. He was referring to NZers
who go to live in Australia.

Could be wrong of course.

It probably is a phrase as old as the mountains and used by all people
who mildly dislikes others.
I heard it loooong ago in SA.

Interesting you say this cause he has made the No 9 spot in Natal his own
ousting ex Bok Robert Du Preez, but I see another Kiwi (lost his name),
playing for Border is being looked at as an understudy to Joost and going on
his SA Barbarian performance, must have a good chance.

Bradbrook.
He is eligible by the end of this year.
BNut in my opinion - judging by the ten minutes Joggie Viljoen was on
for the Barbarians I would say Bradbrook is no. 4 in line.
Joost, then Johan Roux then Joggie (who is about 22 years old).

No one has mentioned this but "Putty" also played for Otago (albeit
briefly) in the early 80's. When he was a scarfie in Dunedin he was in the Otago
Squad a few times but at that stage they had a gluttony
(i.e. more than one) of halfbacks so I cant remember him playing
much seriously.
Actually the last time I heard him talk it was with
a south african accent - does anyone else find this disturbing since it
it only took him about two years away from NZ to develop it!!:)

Hope you cant pick up other country's accents as easily!!

Putt also spent at least one possibly two seasons playing for Terenure in Dublin. He also
married an Irish girl if my memory serves me correctly so he should have quite an amalgam
of accents at this stage.

Isn't there yet another possible understudy for Joost at scrumhalf - Jopie
Adlam, who plays for Western Province (?), appears to be making a bit
of a name for himself - and a name like that does seem to stick in the mind!

Province is shit, but not so shit that it will choose Adlam!!

Adlam plays second fiddle for Transvaal and has the unfortunate habit
