Can anybody supply me with the names of the players included in the
Golden Cats training squad?
Gaffie Du Toit on flyhalf?

They once again have quite a line up - and a new coach. So maybe they
fare better this year.
Backs: John Bradbrook, Gaffie du Toit, Joe Esterhuizen, Jorrie Kruger,
Ricardo Laubscher, Hennie le Roux, Japie Mulder, Jarus Nicholas, James
Small, MJ Smith, Werner Swanepoel, Riaan van Jaarsveld, Lourens
Venter, Dave van Hoesslin, Boeta Wessels, Chester Williams.
Forwards: Johan Ackerman, Basil de Coning, Nak Drotske, Johan Erasmus,
Dirkie Groenewald, Dougie Heymans, Piet Krause, Janus Labuschagne,
Willie Meyer, Philip Smit, Albert van den Bergh, Andre Venter, AJ
Venter, De Waal Venter, Andre Vos, Geideon Watts, Danie Vermeulen.
I think I missed one or two players here - not big names - while James
Dalton is injured.
My choice team would be:
Full back: Jorrie Kruger.
Wings: Chester Williams and Lourens Venter.
Centers: Japie Mulder and Joe Esterhuizen.
Fly Half: Hennie le Roux..
Scrum Half: Werner Swanepoel.
Front row: Willie Meyer and Dougie Heymans (if possible in that
combination).
Hooker: Basil de Coning..
Locks: Johan Ackerman, Andre Venter
Flanks: Rassie Erasmus and Andre Vos
No 8: AJ Venter.

Thanks for the info.
That's quite a team. Interesting that you don't include Gaffie --
he'll have to prove that he wasn't a "flash in the pan." Guess the
same applies to Stefan Terblanche in the Sharks team. Wonder how James
Small will do against upstarts like Jearus Nicholas?
I'm from Cape Town, but the Cats will be my Super 12 team!

Gaffie will be in at either fullback or flyhalf for sure. There is no
way in hell one of Nick Mallett's Springboks isn't going to be
starting at least to begin the Super 12. If their form drops, that's
different, but to start, they will be in the lineup, I can assure.
you. That also means that Lourens Venter will likely be at outside
center, with Japie Mulder at inside center, because Mallett is looking
at options for the no12 jersey, as Snyman is pretty much a lock for
the no13 slot. This is also because James Small is certain to be in
the lineup on the right wing, with Chester Williams on the left. Small
has apparantly gotten himself a personal trainer and is supposedly in
the best shape he's been in since the World Cup. The only other
alternative I can see would be Small at fullback, Williams on the
left, Venter on the right, du Toit at flyhalf, le Roux at no12, and
Mulder at no13. Actually, that seems more likely since Mallett wants
to see Gaffie at flyhalf, and he's also looking at options at
fullback, so maybe that would be a good move for Small to play there
this time around.

Again, Drotske and Smit won't be on the bench to start. When du Randt
returns (if he makes it in time for the S12), he'll be at loosehead,
but until then it will likely be Heymens and Meyer at prop, though
which side they'll be playing I'm not sure, as they're both usually
tightheads I thought. The real question of the pack is where they'll
be playing, not who will be playing. AJ Venter will start on the
bench, unfortunately, but he'll be pressing for the no8 jersey, giving
Vos a big challenge. Mallett wants to see more of Andre Venter at
lock, but Smit has been playing more there lately, and Venter prefers
the flank and would like a chance to win back a spot ousting either
Skinstad (fat chance) or Erasmus, so I think he might start out on the
blindside, but if Mallett decides he wants him at lock, he'll be there
and Smit will move to blindside.
So, the likely team will be:
1 D.Heymens 2 N.Drotske 3 W.Meyer
4 J.Ackermann 5 P.Smit
6 A.Venter 8 A.Vos 9 J.Erasmus [c]
9 W.Swanepoel 10 G.du Toit
12 H.le Roux 13 J.Mulder
11 C.Williams 15 J.Small 14 L.Venter
or
1 D.Heymens 2 N.Drotske 3 W.Meyer
4 J.Ackermann 5 A.Venter
6 P.Smit 8 A.Vos 7 J.Erasmus [c]
9 W.Swanepoel 10 H.le Roux
12 J.Mulder 13 L.Venter
11 C.Williams 15 G.du Toit 14 J.Small

Is this the same John Bradbrook who played halfback for Wellington and
Hawkes Bay around 5/6 years ago?

It was reported in Jo'Burg this morning that Andre Markgraaf will play
Gaffie on fly half and Andre Venter on flank.
Then he also predicts a huge future for Janus Labushagne on lock.
I don't like Gaffie. That is why he is not in my team.
Small is old and slow. Sad but true.,
It is also reported that Markgraaf is looking for an inside center
that has experience and can tackle well. Japie Mulder?

Must be as he is from NZ.
Will Carling?

My personal choice too but I see Markgraaf picking Gaffie. Le Roux
must've done somethig wrong somewhere. He always was a great attacking
and defensive player. Maybe played for the wrong province and pissed of
big Louis along the way? Hopefully he is out of that shadow now.

No ways! Not with Dalton and Drotske so high up on Mallets personal
list.
And I hope this year I do not have to eat my words again. Last year I
saw the GC as S12 finalists. Hope they get closer this year. (At least
win some games :) )
