"Quade Cooper is reportedly considering a code switch to the National
Rugby League (NRL), a move that would further jeopardise the
Wallabies' bid to secure an unprecedented third World Cup title in New
Zealand next year."
Whats the buzz in Oz boys? He would be a loss with the depth you have
a 1st5.
Cheers

It's contract review time with the ARU. Threatening to consider League
offers is par for the course in that environment
If only O'Connor and Beale were chatting with RL Clubs
Viper
Sounds like his manager is trying to drive the price up. Happens every
time, from both codes, when it's time to renegotiate their contracts.

Yes thought the same thing and didn't think much more of it. I wonder
why the newspapers put this out as breaking news when all it is is
part of contract negotiations. Breaking news would be if he actually
signed with a League club.
Stex
Cooper is shit anyway. The same as Genia.
The Aussies were blowing Genia's trumpet for the last year. Oh he's the best
in the world. Crap he's at best average, likewise Cooper.
Beale gets one try off a forward pass now he's suddenly the next star.
What a load of shit!!!!
Well I think Cooper and Genia are both damn good. And I prefer NZ to
Aus from a supporter perspective.
But I can be a snob sometimes and I just don't like Cooper the person.
I have never met him or even heard him speak much so I realise I am
being unfair.
Cooper seems better suited to Leeg.
Genia will be a class act one day.

Can somebody remind me who was the last decent Union player to defect to
League, ignoring all the blokes who had come from professional League in the
first place?
Andrew
Start looking before 1995. Obviously.
Also depends on whether you means is or *was* a decent player. Kirwan
for one was a fuckin' great player but there wasn't much juice left in
then tank when he went over...
CP
Don't know about the last one, but in the 70's Russell Fairfax was
probably Australia's best Union player at the time he switched to
leeg, where he had a nice career until he broke his leg.

You'd be looking a fair few years back now. Revenge is sweet...
If I didn't know better I would swear you're Rick ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Quinnell ?
Switched at 22 years old.
Staying in Wales, Gareth Thomas ?
"... Thomas, who won 100 caps for Wales and captained the Lions against
New Zealand in 2005, is the first significant convert since rugby union
went professional in 1995. ..."
Not that significant at the age of 35, IMHO.
Matthew Ridge, Inga the Winger, Marc Ellis, Daryl Halligan, John
Gallagher, Kurt Sherlock, Frano Botica, Jonathan Davies, John Timu,
Ray Price, Scott Quinnell, Brett Papworth.
Then there's all the RU trained schoolboys who switched early - the
Ricky Stuarts etc.
I think it's safe to say that far more RU players have switched and
made a success of it than have gone the other way. Off hand I can only
think of Brad Thorn, Lote Tuquiri, Wendell Sailor, Jason Robinson, Mat
Rogers, Andy Farrell, Berrick Barnes, Henry Paul, Andrew Walker and
it's debatable how many of those have really made anything other than
a financial success of it.

You shouldn't swear Walter. It's fucking impolite.

Which brings me back to my point. With due respect to the middle-aged
Gareth Thomas, nobody should take seriously a threat from an Australian
rugby player to defect to Leeg.
Does anybody remember the Bath v Wigan cross-code matches? They were
hilarious.
Andrew
An earlier code-crosser was buried last Wednesday. Jeff McLean,
Wallaby winger & older bro. of Paul.
I can recall watching him at the North Ippy Reserve playing for
Ipswich in Bulimba Cup league games. Helluva good winger in either
code. (The break that finished his career was a shocker. He was
hobbling around the family hotel on crutches for an interminable
period - perhaps 18 months after the initial injury).
CP
CP
Yes Dave you're entitled to your own opinion, and I'm entitled to mine.
We'll see in the future.
> Can somebody remind me who was the last decent Union player to defect to

Rob Louw -- moved to Wigan in 1984 at age of 29, after 19 tests for the
Springboks.
Ray Mordt -- moved to Wigan in 1986 at age of 29, after 18 tests and 12
tries for the Springboks, including 3 tries against NZ at Eden Park in 1981.
I suppose back then Union to League used to happen often if players
wanted to earn money.
Of course the 2 you mention also could no longer play international
rugby due to sporting sanctions. I feel quite sure that if SA had
still been playing internationals these 2 would not have made the
switch.

well seeing most teams in the NRL are struggling to stay within the caps or
have no money then I doubt it
hey...maybe the Storm can find the money :-)

Michael O'Connor
Parramatta are prepared to make Quade Cooper the highest-paid player
in the NRL with a deal worth twice as much as the one tabled by the
Australian Rugby Union to keep the Wallabies star.
"Having missed out on Melbourne halfback Cooper Cronk after the Storm
released Greg Inglis to Brisbane last weekProxy-Connection: keep-alive
Cache-Control: max-age=0
C the Eels are willing to offer the same A$850,000 (NZ$1.07 million)
deal to Cooper if he decides to switch codes next season."
Still a negotiating ploy, or what?

Ok, that's worth taking a bit more seriously than usual.
Seems a desperate ploy if genuine. Am I the only one who thinks Cooper is a
decent, emerging talent but not yet nearly as good as this hype? Described
as Australia's best player in that article.

Has always reminded me of Carlos Spencer. Not a Mehrtens, but quite
talented.
GM
I tend to agree. IMHO He's better defensively than Carlos but doesn't
quite have his level of attacking genius.
