Frogs are cowardly. Eye gouging, bag snatching, kick in the back while
the player is trapped in the ruck

The Boks do honest filth, just cheap shots off the ball out in plain
daylight where refs with 20/20 vision can see it.

Perhaps do some research and get number of yellows/reds, especially
reds, per match per team, and prove it definitively.

Granted, not all dirty play will results in yello/reds, but one assumes
that over time, it will average out, then should be able use # of reds
as an indication.

Yes, and I'm sure that the seconds leading up to Thorn dumping the
worlds greatest hooker have been written off to the Collective South
African Amnesia Effect.

Thorn was an idiot. He was provoked, lost his rag and dumped Smit in
a fit of rage, and was heavily penalised for it. What is being
discussed here is institutionalized thuggery, such as Matfield
forearms, Botha elbows, James shoulders, VDL dome hits
etc....calculated, cold blooded and part of their game plan to soften
up the opposition. And when that fails, you send in the Van Zyls...

Cmon Dave - u r more objective than this.

Our boys do push the envelope but one needs to define the relevant
period

Around 2000-2003 - Absolutely terrible by our chaps
2004-2007 - Actually think SA had quite a good disciplinary record.
Count dirty play yellows, reds and citings
2008 - Worse than previous period

SA play the game physically - as do NZ.

You're joking, right? Thorns act took longer to play out that VDLs,
even the premeditative thinking. Thorn picked Smit up and dumped him
down. How can you think VDLs was premeditated and Thorns not?

The perspective has nothing irrelevant, in Rugby Union you don't, well
shouldn't, get credits for perceived foul play by the other side.

was a reaction to provocation, not that it excuses it, but we've all

The other was an unprovoked, calculated effort to hurt an opposition

They'll smack you when your back is turned, right up the highway.

Not only that they'll put a squirrel grip on your nuts, while giving you a

Keegan also has a habit of sticking his finger down the end of your knob,

Thry're both well known for their forward passes usually to the Aussie boys

Also most yellows are not for dirty play. So that gets you down to
reds and they are pretty rare so statistically not a good sample.

You've got the wrong end of the argument. The deciding factor is not
whether it was premeditated or not, but whether the action was legal,
whether it was deliberate, whether it carried a high risk of injury, and
whether an injury was directly connected to the act.

Thorn deliberately tackled a player without the ball, which was illegal
and deserved to be penalised, but was not an overtly foul act. He
dropped the player which in itself carried a low risk of injury, and the
player left the field some time later with an injury that he claims was
related to the incident but this cannot be clearly shown.

Van der Linde's act was not only illegal but deliberately foul, carried
a very high risk of injury, but the other player was fortunately not
injured or we could be talking long term bans.

As it is, I think a suspension of some weeks would be in order.

Yes, I played for many years on hard ground of the highveld, my knees
remind me every day.

Of course you hate it, that way you can justify foul play. How do you
know it was unprovoked? Thought police tell you? Thing is it all needs
to be treated the same way, hard and fast sanctions, nonnegotiable.
Terms like, circumstance, provocation, etc. need to be left out of the
discussion. I got a guy tossed from a match once, talking to him,
getting him upset. He took a swing, got red carded. Should his action
have been excused?

Picking someone up, then dumping them on the ground, after play has
stopped. That is not intentional? Come on Rick, be reasonable. He did
it deliberately, and why else would you do something as bizarre as that
- Other than to hurt them?

BTW, have you ever just fallen 4 feet, let alone picked up then dropped
flat on your back?

I've also stated VDL deserves what ever he gets. I don't care, just get
rid of it, I'm calling for equal application.

Agreed, hence why I only mentioned reds at the end.

> So that gets you down to

Although, one could postulate that yellows, for professional fouls,
could be indicative of a certain mindset that also leads to reds.

Perhaps use number of citings (or cumulative weeks/months/matches
banned) and reds as the main indicators, and yellows as a secondary
indicator.

Add some weightings between reds, citings, and yellows, and then adjust
the weightings until the results correlate with your preconceptions.

Dump tackles are usually more than a penalty. He got a week which seemed
about right.

By the way Rick, you're contradicting yourself *again*, your previous
stance was that foul play leading to injury should be more harshly
punished, now it's just bad luck?

Probably a lot more than some weeks I think. It was stupid, dangerous
and needs to be cut out of the SAn game. What the hell was he thinking
anyway, did he learn from that Tongan chap who you guys planted in the

Eh? I'm actually being serious. If we were to count red and yellows,
England would probably be way up there. Call it the Grewcock effect.
This last England tour down here must be the first in living memory
that a pom hasn't been red carded in a test in NZ.

Of course he did it deliberately, I just said that. But dropping someone
need not result in any more injury than a normal tackle. It wasn;t an
inherently high risk move.

Isn't that what happens to anyone when they get tackled around the chest?

Dump tackles? I should think so. Any guy shits on the field, he should
get the book thrown at him.

Look, he just dropped him. Silly, but not malicious.

So really I didn't contradict myself at all. Thorn's offence was
illegal, not foul (there is a difference), and if any injury resulted it
was bad luck, much like O'Drsicoll (HE COULD HAVE DIED!)

Ok, I get it. Foul play is committed by everyone else, illegal play by
New Zealanders. "Bad Luck" injuries are inflicted by New Zealanders,
injuries from foul play by other nations.
