SUPER 12 PLAYERS NAMED IN FIJI RUGBY SQUAD
SUVA, May 22, Sapa-NZPA
New Zealand All Black sevens winger Waisiki Masirewa and Super
12 props Joeli Veitayaki (Waikato Chiefs) and Viliame Cavubati
(Wellington Hurricanes) were Wednesday named in the Fiji rugby
squad to play in New Zealand and South Africa over the next two
months.
Five other New Zealand players -- hooker Greg Smith (Waikato),
lock Emori Katalau (Poverty Bay), five-eighth Laurence Little
(North Harbour), and utility backs Nicky Little (Waikato) and
Filipe Rayasi (King Country)-- have been named in the 21-member
squad.
Also named in the squad are four Australian-based players,
including Queensland representative Sekove Rauluni, known as Jacob
in the Reds camp.
The tour is the highlight of the season for the Fiji Rugby
Football Union and was instigated by a South African invitation as
part of the Springboks' build-up for the tri-series against New
Zealand and Australia.
While South Africa are footing all the bill for their leg of
the tour, Waikato and Northland have agreed to share with Fiji the
cost of the trip to New Zealand.
Fiji are being coached by former All Black prop Brad Johnston
who arrived in here on April 17 to take up a two-year contract with
the Fiji Rugby Football Union.
Fiji arrives in New Zealand on Wednesday June 12 for two
matches. They play Northland on Saturday June 15 and Waikato a week
later on Sunday June 23.
The Fijians leave for Johannesburg on Monday July 23 for a
one-off test against the Springboks at Pretoria on Tuesday July 2.
South Africa have asked Fiji to play a second match against a
provincial side either on Friday July 5 or Sunday July 6.
