Pure gold: Aussies beat Brits in individual medal count
Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis reckons Australia did beat arch
rivals Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics - on one indicator at
least.
Team GB may have won more more gold medals - 19 to Australia's
14 - but Australia walked away with more individual medallists, Ms
Ellis told parliament today.
"We had 136 individual medallists in the team of 435. Incidentally,
Great Britain, in order for comparison, had 74 individual medallists,"
she said during Question Time.
"(This) I think again illustrates just what a truly amazing
performance Australia put in."
The British haven't been backward in gloating about their superior
medal count.
Ms Ellis, who made headlines when she challenged British Sports
Minister Gerry Sutcliffe to a bet that Australia would do better on
the medal tally, will now have to wear a Team Great Britain t-shirt at
a major sporting event in Australia.
And British tabloid newspaper, The Sun, this week paraded billboards
around London and Sydney gloating about Britain's gold medal success
over Australia.
Emblazoned across an image of a massive red, white and blue Union flag
were the words: "Where the bloody hell were you?" and the gold medal
tallies for the sporting rivals.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who along with Opposition Leader Brendan
Nelson, greeted the Australian team on their return at Sydney Airport
this morning, promised Australia would win more medals at the London
games in 2012.
"Can I say this to our friends in Britain," Mr Rudd told parliament
this afternoon.
"We wish them well for the 2012 Olympics and I'm sure they're going to
do a fantastic job in hosting those Olympics.
"If I know anything about the Australian competitive spirit, and if I
know anything about the Australian Olympic Committee, our lot will be
there with spades on, ready to take it up to the Brits in the best of
Australian traditions come 2012."
He congratulated the Australian athletes on their achievements in
Beijing.
Dr Nelson highlighted the efforts of triple gold medallist Stephanie
Rice and pole vaulting Olympic champion Steve Hooker, among others.
"We were the sixth highest in terms of medal tally at 47 medals
(Australia actually won 46) but we were first when it came to the
inspiration of a nation," he told parliament.
Australia's funding for elite sport came into question after Britain's
medal-winning Olympics was linked to a major funding boost for sport.
But Ms Ellis, who was baited by opposition MPs on the sports funding
issue during question time, would only say that Australia would
"maintain" its support.
Earlier today, Mr Rudd told the Nine Network he would look at the
merits of introducing a national sports lottery to raise more money
for Australian sport.
