An interview with Capes [son of strongman Geoff Capes] in "Inside Rugby"
magazine reveals he has left Leicester and gone back to American Football
with the London Monarchs.
Capes, although on a month to month contract, was on quite a hefty salary
at Leicester. He had been playing second row for 2nd team (his position at
Millfield school -- although he hadn't played since then, he went to
Colorado State Unviversity in the US), but might have been groomed as a
tighthead [he's only 6'3"] for the future.
Capes was one of Dwyer's long-term projects, and with the exit of Dwyer the
Leicester committee took one look at the money being paid and decided to
let Capes go.
The story suggested Capes switched in large part for the money [the
European American Football league apparently doesn't pay too highly, even
for those players like Capes who are doing reasonably well -- the figure
mentioned I think was about £20,000]. Capes is still thinking about coming
back to give rugby another go, with a couple of clubs looking at him.
Hope this clears up a few issues -- wonder if we'll see Capes at whichever
club Dwyer moves on to next?
Cheers,
Ben

Another sign of exactly how much interest the clubs have in the long term of
English rugby maybe. Dwyer was not often wrong.

Thanks for that, Ben. I seldom buy the magazines nowadays.

I believe he is fairly old to move back into rugby too - about 26 or
so.

I'm sure money did come into it, as although Leicester have sound
finances, especially in comparison to other clubs, they are aiming to
break even as soon as possible. However, it is possible that moving
back to rugby was proving difficult. Was there an assessment of how
well he was doing in the 2nd team? One of the problems of a young
family is having to miss out on second string games, though I hope to
see more next season when the midweek second team league starts.

Hard to say really - I've heard Dwyer's name in connection with
Richmond and Harlequins. Quins sounds strange, but it's always
possible Zinzan has had a close look and had enough already :-).
All the best
John Williams.

Dwyer himself said Capes was a long shot. He also said it wasn't a
very expensive gamble. As regards commitment to long term development
of players, I'd say it means nothing. Leicester have a pretty
reasonable track record for getting players and bringing them through
in recent times. Look out for Geordan Murphy, a very promising full
back from Dublin, Neil Fletcher, a lock who has had injury problems
this season, not to mention Miller, Gustard, Moody, Lloyd, Horak - all
very young but playing first team rugby.

Lewis did play a little rugby (I think one sememster) at Colorado State
University following his gridiron season. Despite the fact that CSU was
a sweet sixteen finalist this year (they lost to Cal), I don't think it
was that experience that Dwyer was banking on when they signed him. :)

Not surprised by his move back to American Football.
