That is really too bad. I remember going with my Dad and seeing him make
his international debut (unless my memory is playing tricks) at Twickers
in 1960. Englan won 14-6, but the next years he scored two tries in a 9-6
win in a mudbath in Cardiff.
Incidentally that Twickenham match, which England won 14-6 (I think - this
is all being done without notes), also marked the debut of a "new look"
England team in which Richard Sharp, Brian Weston, Don Rutherford, Budge
Rogers, Jim Roberts, and a few others won their first caps.
My shot at recalling the team from memory:
Rutherford (Percy Park)
John Young (Oxfod U. & Harlequins)
Brian Weston (Durham)
Malcom Phillips (Oxford U. ???) ?????? not sure about this one
Jim Roberts (O. Millhillians)
Richard Sharp (Oxford U.)
R.E.J. Jeeps (Northampton??)????? another question mark
Jacobs (Northampton)
Judd (Coventry)
Marques (Cambridge U/Harlequins)
Currie (Oxford U./????)
Rodgers (Bedford)
WGD Morgan(Medicals - or somesuch)
???? Peter Ford?
There - not bad for an old fart. Anyone else who can correct me or fill in
the gaps? I'll check it out tonight, as I still have the original program
in my collection.
As I said, though, it's always sad to bid goodbye to part of your
childhood, and equally sad that such talented people die so young.

OK, well, I finally got to the actual program, and senile decay has, indeed,
left its mark. It wasn't Dewi Bebb's first cap, but his fifth. It was,
however, his first appearance at Twickenham. He had scored the winning try
against England in Cardiff in 1959, on his debut, in a 5-0 win in the mud. In
1961 the result was 6-3 (not 9-3), and I still think it was Bebb that scored
both.
As to the team, well a feww transpositions here! Ricjard Sharp didn't make his
debut for another year or two - it was Bev Risman in his pre-RL days at
fly-half. One or two other inaccuracies. For the record the teams were:
ENGLAND WALES
D. Rutherford* (Percy Park) Terry Davies (Llanelli)
John Young (Harlequins) Dewi Bebb (Carmartehn T.C. & Swansea)
Malcom Phillips (Oxford U.) G. Windsor Lewis* (Richmond)
Mike Weston* (Richmond) Malcom Price (RAF & Pontypool)
Jim Roberts* (O. Millhillians & Sale) John Collins (Aberavon)
Bev Risman (Manchester U.) Cliff Ashton (Aberavon)
Dickie Jeeps (Northampton) (Capt) Colin Evans* (Pontypool)
Larry Webb (Bedford) Ray Prosser (Pontypool)
Sam Hodgson* (Durham City) Bryn Meredith (Newport)
Peter Wright* (Blackheath) Len Cunningham* (Aberavon)
Richard Marques (Harlequins) Gareth Payne* (Army & Pontypridd)
John Currie (Harlequins) Rhys Williams (Llanelli) (Capt)
Peter Robbins (Moseley) Brian Cresswell* (Newport)
William Morgan* (Medicals) John Faull (Swansea)
Dick Syrett (Wasps) Haydn Morgan (Abertillery)
My apologies for previous errors and omissions.
