I thought I would include a few more Auks, Rob. BTW, we promise not to
win the Ranfurly Shield off you next time. ;-)

McCahill. No one would have heard of McCahill if Sherlock hadn't switched
to RL. He was a journeyman midweek player who was made to look better by
playing between Fox and Stanley.

Was Hewett's career any better than Stu Forster's?

Richard Turner

Never. Buck certainly didn't disgrace himself in his limited
opportunities in 1986. He should have been picked ahead of his namesake,
Albert, in the 1987 RWC squad such was his trial form. See my other post
about Tregaskis. He made such an impact, you forgot him. ;-)

I'd put Fromont in there as well.

>Reserves: Paul McGahan, Marty Berry,

>Paul? Simonsen

Went to RL before we saw the best of him. He was a very good winger at
provincial level (see v. Wales, 1988) but was never picked after 1987.
There have been worse than him.

>Jeff Hines

An exceptionally fast and physically uncompromising flanker given his
occupation (a bushman). I'd take him ahead of Carter any day.

What about Stu Conn or Wayne Graham?

>and another hooker.

Graham Dowd - only picked because Thorburn was a selector.

As for hookers, I never thought Bruce Hemara (Manawatu) was ever that flash
either. Just at the right place, right time when there wasn't much else to
choose from.

Hamish.....

What about
John Boe
John Mitchell
Joe Leota
Bryce Robins (I think the last two were picked for the abandoned tour to
S.A. - but nether wore the jersey)

Don't forget that Hud cleaned out Andrew Hayden at lineout time back in the
game when Tim Twigden put Arthur Stone away for a Ranfurly winning try!

I'll dispute this. Forster never played that badly. Neither did Hewitt for
that matter. What about Lyn Davis? Played (once?) against Ireland.

Hmmm. While Turner never played well, I get the feeling we never saw the best
of him because of injury.

Thats a good one. Tregaskis for sure.

Oh yes.

Ouch.

Otago. But he wasn't that bad. Had a pretty good Grand Slam tour in 78.

> 7. Liam Barry [NH]

Did he have enouth games. I would have Mark Carter - who never had one
good one.

Thats going to get a few backs up.

Gordy played one game only - for the Baby Blacks. They won that day.

While Forster was outstanding for Otago he should have never been picked
for the ABs because he didn't suit the AB style. This put pressure on the
likes of Mannix (see v. France, 1994). I agree that he never played that
badly but the ABs only won twice (Scotland, Italy) in the 6 tests he
played. What made matters worse was that Bachop was ignored by Mains
during this period. Duh!

Yes, as a sub for Loe against Ireland in 1992. All his 8 games for NZ
were played that year.

Agree with the Bachop part, but outside of him Forster was the form halfback in
NZ. He played some beauties as well. I am not sure who the worst HB should be
but not Forster imo. He got a lot of flak for bad ball when his forwards were
under pressure. Remember too that he always had to contend with bad ball - he
had the then Otago front 5 playing for him.

Mannix was never an international player.

Yeah thats right. Used to feel sorry for Dowd and Gatland - they never really
got to play.

Oi, Bernie was the only player who seemed to be able to handle Fox and not get
flustered with his tantrums. The fact that Stanley rates as one of our great
centres outside BM speaks well for his linkage skills.
